Mata will get better with more games, says Moyes

The 25-year-old performed admirably and, despite lacking full match fitness, was involved in both goals in the Red Devils' 2-0 victory at Old Trafford. Moyes expressed his satisfaction with Mata's contribution and believes the better his side get, the more the former Chelsea playmaker will show his quality. "I thought Juan played very well," he told the club's official website. "He made some terrific passes for us, got us on the ball, gave us a different look at times and he will grow. We will get used to him more as well. "I thought the longer we keep him on the better and we will hopefully get him up to speed quickly. He was close to making us a couple of goals in the early part of the game with his passing and I think everybody knows what he is capable of. "I think when we are in full flow, when we are playing as well as we can then I think he will be a big help for us all." Phil Jones was also quick to hail the arrival of the ex-Valencia playmaker, admitting it has given everyone a lift following a tough period on the pitch. "It makes an impact in the dressing room when you sign a player of that calibre," he told ManUtd.com. "He is such a talented player on the ball. He has definitely lifted spirits in the dressing room and especially in training. "He came in against Cardiff. He has done well and I am sure he will be a huge asset and fantastic player for Manchester United, hopefully for many years to come. He sees the pass that sometimes no-one else sees. If he continues to make them, I am sure we will soon be climbing the table."

Young keeper Johnstone pens new Man United deal

Posted: 29 Jan 2014 07:21 AM PST

The 20-year-old is still waiting to make his first appearance for the Premier League champions, but will hope to change that after agreeing a deal until June 2017. Preston-born Johnstone has spent time on loan at Oldham Athletic, Scunthorpe United, Walsall and most recently Yeovil Town, where a proposed three-month spell was curtailed after just one game in August as he sustained a finger injury. Capped at under-16, under-17, under-19 and under-20 level with England, Johnstone will be determined to catch the eye of United manager David Moyes.

Young on his way to Man United goal target

Posted: 29 Jan 2014 05:00 AM PST

The 28-year-old has been the subject of fierce scrutiny by supporters in 2013/14, but his contribution proved pivotal in United's victory over the Bluebirds. The England international has now scored three goals in his last seven appearances and believes there is more to come from him and his team. "Of course I should score more," he told MUTV. "I set myself targets at the start of the season and I'm on my way. Hopefully I can build on that. "I'm delighted to get on the scoresheet, but the most important thing was getting the three points and we've done that. We could have had a few more goals but we set out to get the three points and we've done that. "We were frustrated that it was only 2-0, we spoke about it after the game and there were more goals to get. We got the victory and felt comfortable, so we're delighted. We will build on this." Speaking about his goal, Young said: "It ranks up there with my best. As soon as I struck it, I thought it had a good chance of going in and I think I was celebrating before it hit the back of the net." United recently acquired Juan Mata from Chelsea for a club-record £37.1 millon, and manager David Moyes wants to build on the renewed optimism around Old Trafford. The Scot is confident Young is capable of maintaining his recent form and is pleased with the winger's response after a lacklustre start to the season. "Everybody knows that Ash is capable of that and I am pleased for him because he worked hard, there is a lot of competition for places and he is pushing hard to play," Moyes told MUTV. "He will do if he keeps coming up with some goals or creating goals. Ash put the cross in for Antonio Valencia to hit the bar which led to Robin van Persie's goal, so he had an assist in one and scored the other. Well done to him."

Moyes wants United to build on renewed optimism

Posted: 29 Jan 2014 01:28 AM PST

The reigning Premier League champions sit seventh in the table following a string of poor results in Moyes' first season in charge. However, positivity has been provided by the arrival of playmaker Juan Mata from Chelsea for a club-record fee, while United also saw Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney return from injury for Tuesday's victory over Cardiff City. Despite expressing satisfaction with his side's success against Cardiff, Moyes is targeting further improvement. "I want to be more convincing - win better; play better," said the Scot. "Don't think because we win I've got a smile on my face and I'm happy. "I'm happy for the three points, but for where I want to go and the vision I've got for the way I want the team to play I've got a long way to go." Van Persie marked his first appearance since December 10 with United's opening goal against Cardiff. "We've missed his goals," Moyes conceded. "Out of nothing, he can get you one."
