Mata thrilled with unbelievable debut Posted: 28 Jan 2014 03:51 PM PST The Spain international made the 37.1million switch to David Moyes side from rivals Chelsea on Saturday, and made an immediate impact with a fine display in the 2-0 victory over Cardiff City at Old Trafford on Tuesday. Mata was not on the scoresheet, but United took all three points as Robin van Persie marked his return from injury with a close-range header to open the scoring, while Ashley Youngs solo effort confirmed the points on 59 minutes. The 25-year-old also got to link up with England international Wayne Rooney, who returned from a five-match absence with a foot issue for the final 30 minutes. And Mata revelled in making his United bow. Its been unbelievable, playing in this stadium, we won and created chances, he toldBBC Sport.Three points was important for the team and for me, Im very happy. I was very excited, its been unbelievable. Im happy with the team, they have welcomed me. Im looking forward to playing more. When asked whether United, who currently sit seventh, can reach the Champions League, he added: We will try until the end. This is a team that never gives up. Every game is like a final for us. Mata was also thrilled to get game time with Van Persie and Rooney and believes the duo will flourish for the rest of the campaign. We are talking about two of the best strikers in the world, he continued. Robin and Wayne are unbelievable. Hopefully they will score lots before the end of the season. Trio will improve United performances, says Moyes Posted: 28 Jan 2014 03:35 PM PST The Spain international completed a £37.1 million move from rivals Chelsea on Sunday, and put in an assured performance in the reigning champions' 2-0 victory over Cardiff City at Old Trafford on Tuesday. Manager Moyes was also boosted by Van Persie's return from a thigh injury that has ruled him out since December, with the Dutchman opening the scoring with a close-range header. Ashley Young added the second with a superb solo effort, and Moyes was able to introduce Rooney for the final half-an-hour after he missed the last five games with a groin issue. The Scot was thrilled to have the trio at his disposal, and feels the side will improve their current position of seventh with them in the team. "It was good to get a team with Robin back on the pitch, give Juan his debut and great to get Wayne back on the bench and give him some minutes at the end," Moyes said. "I thought Juan did really well, created some good chances for us. I was concerned about his match fitness but we got the second goal and I was able to give him some more minutes and keep him playing. "It was the same with Robin - we knew we could only give him 60 minutes, and (the same with) Wayne who only started training on Monday. "The results with them will get much better, we need to get them into the right physical condition. They need match practice and match fitness. I was really pleased with them." Mata was employed behind Van Persie who started as the lone striker, but Moyes concedes he will look to utilise his versatility going forward to accommodate all three players in his starting XI. He added: "I can play him off the left, off the right. I can keep Robin and Wayne as a partnership, I'm comfortable with that. Anytime I need him (Mata) to play a different role, like number 10, he can do that." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Solskjaer confirms Cardiff deal for Fabio Posted: 28 Jan 2014 03:02 PM PST The Norwegian is still searching for his first Premier League victory at the Welsh outfit after seeing his side lose 2-0 at reigning Premier League champions United on Tuesday, a club where Solskjaer spent 11 years as a player. But Solskjaer's unhappy homecoming was softened somewhat by the capture of full-back Fabio, who ends his six-year association at Old Trafford, for whom twin brother Rafael also features. And Solskjaer is excited at seeing the Brazilian in action. "Fabio is done, that was done late (on Monday)," he said. "Fabio is like his brother, an attacking full-back. He'll give us that little bit extra pace and he'll give us that Brazilian flair and enthusiasm. "You see Brazilians play football it's fantastic. I can't wait to see him at the Cardiff City Stadium." Solskjaer added Rafael had asked him to take care of his "older" brother in the Welsh capital. "He (Fabio) wanted to stay near his family and they've played in the same team they're whole life," he continued. "Rafael came to me after the game and asked me to look after his brother, his big brother, apparently Rafael was born a few minutes later. "I'll look after him, he's good for us." The Premier League's bottom side are also expected to sign United winger Wilfried Zaha on loan, but Solskjaer confirmed that deal had yet to be completed. Cardiff were behind after just six minutes at Old Trafford as Robin van Persie marked his return from a six-week lay-off with a close-range header before Ashley Young added a second with a superb solo effort just before the hour mark. Solskjaer admits the early setback hindered his side and is targeting home victories to move his side off the foot of the table. He added: "Obviously you get the (slow) start. It was a great goal by Van Persie, he gets three bounces on the ball, that's a goalscorer. That's what we need, we tried but we didn't have the 'oomph'. "This month we've had away games to Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United. You've seen the team develop over the last month, now it's time to get points. "We probably need another 18 points - we have to target the home games to get points." Solskjaer received a warm welcome from the Old Trafford crowd and was "humbled" by the reception. "You feel honoured and humbled that the supporters still appreciate you," he continued. "But I'm working for Cardiff - that's my job now." Premier League: Man United 2 Cardiff 0 Posted: 28 Jan 2014 01:37 PM PST Spain international Mata was given his first outing in a United shirt since completing his club-record £37.1 million deal from Premier League rivals Chelsea on Saturday, but it was Van Persie - making his first appearance since December 10 due to a groin injury – who stole the show by notching the opener. Mata played his part in a lively United performance, and he was afforded a standing ovation by the Old Trafford crowd as he was withdrawn in the closing stages, with Ashley Young's superb strike rounding off a pleasing night for boss David Moyes. Cardiff manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who enjoyed an 11-year spell as a player at United, could not spoil the party against his former club - the Norwegian enduring an unhappy homecoming as he continues to search for his first Premier League victory in charge. The home side controlled the tempo in the first half and deservedly moved ahead when Van Persie scored his fifth goal in his last six Premier League games with a close-range header. United continued to impress and Young added a second with a fierce strike just short of the hour mark, as United surpassed 1,000 points at Old Trafford in the Premier League. United utilised Mata behind Van Persie, while Wayne Rooney was on the substitutes' bench after a five-match lay-off with a foot injury. As well as welcoming back Solskjaer, there was another familiar face for United fans in the Cardiff line-up, as they named former Old Trafford striker Fraizer Campbell in their starting XI. The home side were rewarded for a bright start with the opener after six minutes. Antonio Valencia headed Young's teasing delivery against the crossbar and, although David Marshall saved Van Persie's initial follow-up, the Dutchman nodded home the rebound. Mata was at the heart of all United's attacking play but, despite their solid start, it took until the 34th minute for the champions to fashion another chance of note when Patrice Evra's clever backheel found the lively Van Persie, who flashed an effort across goal from an acute angle. Cardiff could have punished the hosts when Craig Noone crossed from the right, only for his delivery to narrowly evade Campbell. The visitors enjoyed a spell of pressure after the break and Declan John's cutback only just escaped the attentions of Campbell again. United were rarely in danger, however, and Young made it 2-0 on 59 minutes when he received the ball on the left before cutting inside and skipping past two challenges to rifle into the far corner from 25 yards. Shortly afterwards, Rooney replaced Van Persie - and he was soon among the action with a deflected effort sailing narrowly wide. Valencia then saw Marshall tip his effort onto the post as United piled on the pressure. Mata saw an effort deflected over before he was withdrawn with time running out, receiving the adulation of his new fans. Rooney then curled wide from 20 yards in injury time but United had done enough. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Guardiola denies rift with striker Mandzukic Posted: 28 Jan 2014 08:05 AM PST The Croatia forward was omitted from Bayern squad's for the 2-0 win at Borussia Monchengladbach last Friday, leading to further reports that he is set to leave the club. Guardiola was reportedly unimpressed with Mandzukic's performances in training following the announcement that Robert Lewandowski will join the German and European champions at the end of the season. Juventus and Manchester United are just two of a host of clubs who have been linked with a move for the 27-year-old, who has scored 10 goals for the Bavarian giants this term. Bayern coach Guardiola has not decided if Mandzukic will be back in the squad to face Stuttgart on Wednesday, but played down talk of a rift with the former Wolfsburg man. He said at a press conference on Tuesday: "After a workout, I'll decide (whether Mandzukic will feature against Stuttgart), "We have a big squad. In every game I have to decide for 18 players. It will happen almost every week, that one, two, three super-super players can not in the squad with us." Guardiola became increasingly irked by questions about Mandzukic and stressed that the decision to leave the striker out against Gladbach was for the good of the team. He added: "This is the third question about Mandzu. That's enough. You know my opinion. There is no problem. It was my decision for the final game. "In the first round Mandzu played. For Thomas Muller or Claudio Pizarro sometimes not. In this situation, I see and analyse what is best for the team. That's the only reason. There is no other." Wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben will play no part against Stuttgart due to "muscular problems", whileHolger Badstuber, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Daniel van Buyten and Javi Martinez all remain sidelined. Robben came on as a substitute in Friday's win at Gladbach following a spell on the sidelines with a knee problem, but revealed after the game that he is still not fully fit. What Matas arrival means to Rooneys role in Manchester Uniteds future Posted: 28 Jan 2014 06:41 AM PST For the second successive season, Wayne Rooney has watched on as a player of comparable quality has arrived to lay claim to one of his favoured positions. Last year it was Robin van Persie who stole the spotlight, turning the forward's one-man show into a double act. Now the £37.1 million arrival of Juan Mata confirms—along with the emergence of Adnan Januzaj—that David Moyes' strongest XI has become an ensemble cast. It seems that Rooney's concern with the level of ambition shown by the club has now been allayed by the signing of Mata, along with a new deal for the England international reported to be worth around £300,000 per week. Yet if Rooney were still to run his current contract down – or re-sign and later attract a huge bid from a cash-rich suitor abroad – United now have a genuine top-class replacement in the ranks. Like Van Persie last season, the Spaniard can help break the reliance on Rooney. During his two-and-a-half year stint at Chelsea, Mata proved himself to be one of the league's finest big-game players, driving the Blues to numerous comebacks and trophy wins. It was he who recorded assists in each of their victorious FA Cup, Champions League and Europa League finals. With 33 goals and 58 assists in 135 appearances, he is currently second only to David Silva in terms of chances created since August 2011, when he joined Chelsea from Valencia. Leading by example throughout the changing regimes of Andre Villas-Boas, Roberto Di Matteo and Rafael Benitez, Mata was named Chelsea's Player of the Year in 2011/12 and 2012/13. Clearly a well-respected figure at Stamford Bridge, he was also named the Players' Player of the Year last season. Those looking for reasons why Jose Mourinho has played him less often this season have suggested that Mata is defensively lazy. But while he may not match up to Rooney's industry – few forward players do – the Spaniard does track back and work hard for others. It could even be argued that his superior touch and level of control in tight spaces makes him a better retainer and user of the ball in the final third, lessening the need to win it back so aggressively. Yet as a link player, he does regularly drop back to offer his teammates covering runs and extra passing options, which will be vital to ensuring United cope against reinforced midfields. Even during sub-par performances, Rooney helps the team maintain its intensity and Mata can provide a similar service to Michael Carrick Co. United fans will also already be well aware of his proficiency at free-kicks – another department in which he can match the England striker. At just 25, he is also two and a half years younger than the Englishman and yet to reach his peak. However, buying Mata doesn't mean that Rooney should be sold: it merely gives the club options. Given the nature of the current transfer market, with newly moneyed clubs making expensive status signings, a major contract extension would increase Rooney's resale value. Main man in the middle Some analysts insist that Rooney shouldn't be a forward. Arguably the most talented English player of his generation, the forward has too much to his game to limit himself as a pure No.9, while his bustling style of play means that he isn't a natural fit for the preened role of a No.10 either. As he drops deep, bursts forward and shells opponents from range with his mortar-like long passes, he often better resembles something approaching a throwback to the box-to-box midfielders of old, repositioned slightly further forward by the modern game. Mata is a more refined and tidy player who revelled in his role behind the main striker at Chelsea. Should he take up a similar position at United, behind a fit-again Van Persie, Rooney would be at something of a loose end. Shifting Rooney deeper is a controversial idea, not least for the player himself. Having previously reacted positively about playing a deeper role, it seemed that some of his discontent during last summer's exit rumours came from being played "out of position". It's possible however that the complaint was generated as an extra piece of circumstantial evidence as his feud with Ferguson developed. Redeploying him in midfield would help the team's shape. In order to accommodate Mata, Van Persie and Januzaj in their best positions, the team's lack of genuine width and pace would necessitate playing Danny Welbeck, Antonio Valencia or another fast, wide option. Sitting further back would also maximise Rooney's long passing and get the best out of the squad's attacking midfielders. Their penchant for one-twos have long suffered due to the lack of a convincing goal threat and forward runs from deep. By following in the footsteps of Brian McClair, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs – United players who crept back as they entered their thirties—he could become the assertive, dynamic midfield presence the club has lacked for so long. Moyes called Mata the "first of many" signings that will shape his "new Manchester United". Rooney's reaction to his billing as part of a fresh attacking quartet could yet define this next era whether he decides to stay, leave or adapt. Kroos departure a possibility, says Guardiola Posted: 28 Jan 2014 06:41 AM PST The Germany international has played an integral role in the European champions' impressive first season under Guardiola so far. However, Kroos has just 18 months remaining on his contract and the 24-year-old has been linked with a move to Manchester United. United boss David Moyes was at Borussia-Park to watch Bayern's 2-0 win against Borussia Monchengladbach last Friday, sparking further speculation that the Premier League champions were preparing a bid for Kroos. Former Barcelona coach Guardiola is eager to keep the player at the Allianz Arena, but knows there is a danger he could move on. "He is an important player," Guardiola said. "But it can go fast in football. Here today, there tomorrow." Kroos has already turned down an offer of an extension from Bayern, and toldKicker-Sportmagazin on Tuesday that he would be "unable to rule anything out" with regard to his future. "I am under contract with Bayern Munich. Actually, there are, (as) yet, no further talks scheduled, I will therefore fully focus on the second half of the season," he added. Kroos refuses to rule out Bayern Munich exit Posted: 28 Jan 2014 03:13 AM PST The 24-year-old has just 18 months left to run on his existing contract at the Allianz Arena, and is said to be a transfer target for Premier League champions United. United boss David Moyes watched Kroos make his 14th Bundesliga start of the season in Bayern's 2-0 win at Borussia Monchengladbach last Friday, which intensified speculation of an impending move to Old Trafford. Kroos has rejected one offer of an extension from Bayern, and is in no rush to sit down for further negotiations with the German and European champions. "I am unable to rule anything out," he told Kicker-Sportmagazin. "I am under contract with Bayern Munich. Actually, there are, (as) yet, no further talks scheduled, I will therefore fully focus on the second half of the season. "There are worse situations in life. I play for a top club, and under a top coach. "I am pleased, and sometime in the future a decision will be made." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Uh-oh, Ole: How former Man United stars fared on their managerial return Posted: 28 Jan 2014 03:04 AM PST Cardiff's new Norwegian boss spent a glorious 11 years at Old Trafford after joining from Molde as an obscure little 23-year-old in summer 1996. But Fergie knew what he was doing, of course - The Baby-Faced Assasin would net 91 times in 235 appearances (and quite an important one in a 1999 final... what was it again?) despite a string of injuries which often limited playing time to bit-part appearances off the bench. Now, though, it's the dugout where the popular 40-year-old resides. So what's he up against? Er, well, just ask this lot how their managerial returns to Old Trafford went... George Graham: Lost 2-0, Arsenal (Div 1, 86/87) As an Arsenal player, Graham won the club's famous Double in 1971, but the Scot's two-year spell with Manchester United was wholly unsuccessful as the club were relegated to the Second Division. After his £120,000 move from Highbury, Graham made 43 appearances in two years from 1972-74. He returned to Old Trafford in his first season as Gunners boss, but on this occasion the tables were turned and an unsuccessful visit was settled by home goals from Gordon Strachan and Terry Gibson in a 2-0 win. Bryan Robson: Lost 2-0, Middlesbro' (PL, 95/96) Robson's £1.5 million transfer from West Brom in 1981 broke the British transfer record - but it's fair to say the investment was worthwhile. The midfielder soon became a firm favourite among the United faithful, and perhaps the club's finest-ever skipper (hence the famous Captain Marvel tag). The Durham-born dominator went on to win two league titles and three FA Cups, before transferring to Middlesborough in his twilight years. But when Robson returned to Old Trafford as Boro boss, the hosts ran out 2-0 winners thanks to goals at the end of each half from Gary Pallister and Andy Cole. Loyalty, eh? Overrated. Gordon Strachan: Lost 3-1, Coventry (PL, 96/97) The current Scotland manager quit his native Highlands to join United from Aberdeen in 1984. Strachan spent four years at Old Trafford, scoring 33 goals in 160 appearances. Like those before him, though, the fiery-haired Scot's first visit to Old Trafford as a manager ended in disaster. His Coventry fudged two own goals in the first five minutes through Gary Breen and Eoin Jess, and went on to lose 3-1. Darren Huckerby's 86th-minute strike was a mere consolation after Karel Poborsky had made it three straight after half time. Steve Coppell: Lost 2-0, Palace (PL, 97/98) Coppell enjoyed a successful career at Old Trafford as a member of Tommy Docherty's exciting young side of the mid-to-late 70s. In eight years he racked up 322 appearances, winning the Second Division title in his first season, an FA Cup runners-up medal in his second and eventually lifting the trophy in his third against treble-chasing Liverpool. Fast forward to Coppell's managerial career, meanwhile, and a trip to Old Trafford for his newly promoted Crystal Palace side. True to form, the former United man couldn't steer the south Londoners away from defeat as goals from Teddy Sheringham and a Hermann Hreidarsson own goal gave the hosts a 2-0 win. Steve Bruce: Lost 2-0, Birmingham (PL, 02/03) Bruce enjoyed a successful nine-year stint at United after signing from Norwich in 1984. He racked up 309 appearances at the heart of the Reds' defence, scoring a surprisingly good 36 goals along the way. But Bruce's first managerial apperance at Old Trafford ended in defeat (obviously) as his newly promoted Birmingham side lost 2-0. Goals from Diego Forlan and some chap named Beckham ensured United ended a run of back-to-back defeats to take all three points. Mark Hughes: Drew 0-0, Blackburn (PL, 04/05) Hughes started his career at United and quickly made a name for himself by netting on his debut against Oxford in November 1983. Impressive performances attracted interest from abroad, and Hughes took in short spells with Barcelona and Bayern Munich before returning to United, where he bagged another 116 goals in 352 appearances. Hughes' first encounter at Old Trafford as manager ended in a 0-0 stalemate (hooray!) as his Blackburn side frustrated the title chasers and earned a hard-fought point. The following season Hughes' men would do the Double over Fergie's frustrated runners-up. Roy Keane: Lost 1-0, Sunderland (PL, 07/08) One of United's all-time greatest leaders (just try getting Sir Alex to say that now), Keane enjoyed a distinguished 12-year career after joining from Nottingham Forest in 1993. He led United to nine major honours, making him the most successful captain in the club's history. Keane returned to Old Trafford with his first club in management, Sunderland, who'd risen from the Championship under the Irishman's stewardship. Nevertheless, Keane saw his side lose 1-0 courtesy of Louis Saha's 72nd-minute winner. Paul Ince: Lost 5-3, Blackburn (LC, 08/09) Ince was a strong presence in United midfield alongside captain Robson. His feisty tackling and raking passes cemented his place in a successful United side that won several major honours in the 1990s. Ince's managerial spell with Blackburn was brief - just 177 days, in fact - but it was enough time to face off against his former club in this League Cup quarter-final. It went badly. Carlos Tevez stole the show by netting four goals in United's 5-3 win, Rovers fans spent much of the game calling for their manager's head, and were duly satisfied a fortnight later when The Guvnor got the chop. Moyes: If players do not improve, they will leave Posted: 28 Jan 2014 01:07 AM PST United's Premier League title defence is in tatters, with seven defeats in their first 22 matches seeing them sit seventh in the table. They are already 14 points behind table-toppers Arsenal, and despite Saturday's club-record acquisition of Juan Mata - which took their spending this season beyond £65 million - from Chelsea, a title push looks highly unlikely. And Moyes admitted he is "disappointed" with the club's start to the season, and says several players are on their last chance, promising to make more big-name signings like Mata. "I am not going to accept it," Moyes said. "I'm disappointed that we're not in a much stronger position. I'm disappointed with how we have played. "I will ultimately take the rap for that, but what I will do is make it right. "I'm going to get better players in. There will be more. "I don't think there will be more in January, but it will change. I have said many times that I have given every player here the opportunity to play and show what they can do. "We have nearly done that now." Moyes reiterated his view that Mata was the first of many signings, acknowledging the size of the task at hand as he looks to improve United's fortunes. "A couple of new signings isn't all that's needed," he added. "There's a bigger job to be done, but you have to start somewhere." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The FourFourTwo Preview: Man United vs Cardiff Posted: 28 Jan 2014 12:01 AM PST Billed as The Solskjaer Derby. Not that? OK, United are rubbish at penalties? Or that, huh? Juan Mata joined Man United?! Behave, like that would ever happen. Oh… The lowdown So, the Special One couldn't/wouldn't find a way to get the Special Juan into his XI and has sent him to the land of red bricks, Lowry and the Stone Roses. For all the things wrong with Man United this season, and there's plenty of them, the lack of a genuine No.10 wasn't really one of them. Wayne Rooney, when fit, has enjoyed one of his most productive campaigns in years – bringing him potential captaincy rights, better pay and a consultancy in future transfers should he sign a new contract – while Shinji Kagawa has never really been given a fair crack at his favoured position behind a striker. David Moyes still needs a consistent midfield partner for Michael Carrick (whose own injury troubles are causing growing alarm) and, assuming the rumours of Patrice Evra's impending exit are accurate, a left-back, but the mental lift the arrival of a player with such undoubted quality provides could prove incalculable. Already, the talk is of Champions League football, despite United's miserable League Cup exit to Sunderland. Rooney and Robin van Persie have both trained since the Black Cats debacle and any team containing those two, plus Mata and the improving Adnan Januzaj, has the raw talent to compete. It needs Moyes to pull it all together. As for Cardiff, a worrying trend is increasingly being established. The Bluebirds have scored only five first-half goals all season, and only Palace have netted fewer than the Welsh side's meagre total of 17. Fraizer Campell is the club's top scorer with a paltry five, but all bar one have come against Manchester sides, so expect the former Red Devil to start against his former club. Their last league win came against West Brom, and even the replacement of Malky Mackay with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hasn't brought an end to a run of five defeats in six games since that mid-December victory. Returning to the club where he won 13 major honours as a player and a handful of trophies as reserve team boss, the Norwegian must hope his signings – remember Mackay was effectively sacked for asking for three – inject some life into an increasingly flagging season. So often an unhappy venue for ex-United stars – see Mark Hughes, Steve Bruce, Bryan Robson and more – Solskjaer's first league win may yet have to wait a little while longer. Team news Carrick will be out for around a month, while Rio Ferdinand should be nearer to a weekend return. Rooney, Van Persie and Marouane Fellaini are all expected to play some part from respective pelvis, thigh and wrist injuries. Long-term injured Andrew Taylor is Cardiff's only absentee. Key battle: Patrice Evra vs Craig Noone Cardiff's principal threat in recent weeks has been Noone's erratic wing play. The Scouser may not be the most consistent of performers, but his drive and directness cutting inside from the left wing causes danger. Coming up against Evra, about whom Moyes clearly isn't keen, the former roofer has the trickery and quick feet to challenge a 32-year-old whose manager believes to be on the wane. The managers Moyes must hope United's recent trend of conceding more possession to teams visiting Old Trafford stops. Still to find the system and rhythm that gets the best from his squad, United are visibly more assured away from the pressure cooker of home games. Solskjaer's first visit to Old Trafford's opposition dugout as manager will be emotional, but the Norwegian must eschew sentiment for an improved performance and, ideally, a result. Those who remember his days as the Baby-Faced Assassin are feeling pretty old, about now. Facts and figures Man United will hope their record signing can bring optimism back to Old Trafford having lost 5 of their 6 games in all competitions this year. However, they have won each of their last 10 home matches against bottom-six clubs with 8 of them being W/W double results. Cardiff havewon just 1 of their last 12 league matches, with 8 defeats in that time. The Bluebirds have lost by 2 or more goals in 7 of their last 11 away matches. Moyes: Zaha and Fabio bound for Cardiff Posted: 27 Jan 2014 04:36 PM PST Moyes told United's website that the pair would join the Welsh club, after Cardiff boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer already revealed the Brazilian Fabio is training with the English Premier League outfit. Fabio is expected to sign a permanent contract, while Zaha's switch is set to be a loan deal. "We're delighted for Fabio because he has been a great servant," Moyes said. "His brother (Rafael) is doing a great job for us here as well. "We wish him well. "He had one or two options but, in the end, we felt we couldn't get him enough games. "I said to the players, if you feel I'm not getting you enough games, come and see me. "Fabio felt that, so he's got a move to Cardiff." Moyes added: "With Wilfried Zaha, I'd said to him during the summer that we wanted to get him games. "If he played, then great, but if he couldn't, we'd get him out on loan. "We had one or two offers for him but just felt Cardiff, at this moment in time, might be the right club. "With Ole going there as well, he knows how the club works here and exactly what we do with the players so hopefully it will be a good move for Wilf." Zaha has not started a Premier League match for United since moving to Old Trafford from Crystal Palace before the season. Coincidentally, the two clubs face off in the Premier League on Tuesday, with neither player eligible for the clash. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
