Londons greatest problem solver is back in business Posted: 01 Jan 2014 01:41 PM PST New Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood - with the help of his trusty sidekick, who is presumably often left rather confused by his methods - has led Spurs to an impressive victory at Old Trafford. He's clearly some kind of genius - with 10 points and nine goals in four Premier League matches, he's making this management lark all seem rather elementary (don't feel the need to remind us of this when Daniel Levy sacks him within a few months). Sherwood hails unstoppable Adebayor Posted: 01 Jan 2014 01:08 PM PST Adebayor grabbed his third goal in four games since Sherwood brought him back into the first team, having been left out by former boss Andre Villas-Boas, and the 44-year-old was delighted with his Old Trafford display. The 29-year-old rose unmarked at the back post to head home a Christian Eriksen cross in the first half to put Spurs 1-0 up, and led the line well until he left the field on a stretcher in the 70th minute. "He's a top striker," Sherwood said. "One of the best in the league, when he performs like he is at the moment he's almost unstoppable. "He's massively important to us. He's happy in himself and wants to play every minute. "He's got ice on every part of his body so we can't tell what's wrong with him, I'm hoping he's not too badly injured." It was not just Adebayor who impressed Sherwood on Wednesday, the head coach praising all of his injury-ravaged squad for recording back-to-back victories at the home of the defending champions. "We've got nine players injured so we're having to go with it with a very small squad at the moment," he added. "We just try to win as many games as we can. We'll try to dig out result and see what we can do. I think we've got good enough players to achieve something, we'll just see what that is. "I thought we could have played better, we could have moved the ball a bit sharper because they were there for the taking, We didn't do it regular enough but games are won on different qualities. "We showed the heart of a lion out there. We really dug in when we had to, all credit to the lads for getting a result." The win moves Tottenham into sixth place in the Premier League and just two points off Liverpool in fourth. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
New Year report: How the Premier League clubs rated over Christmas Posted: 01 Jan 2014 12:58 PM PST After the Premier League festive fixturefest of four games in 12 days, how did the top-flight outfits fare? Presenting the Christmas winners, losers and (fnurk) drawers... 1. Man City Actual position 2nd, festive results WWWW – 12 points out of 12 Boxing Day win against Liverpool caught the eye but also remained calmly confident in the wins at Fulham and Swansea and at home to prickly Palace. And all without Aguero. 2. Chelsea 3rd, DWWW 10/12 Having held Arsenal, they did what they needed at home to Swansea and, impressively, Liverpool before slapping Southampton. Lurking ominously on Arsenal's shoulder. 3. Tottenham 6th, WDWW 10/12 Self-confessed "gamble" Tim Sherwood looking good with three wins in their unbeaten festive fixtures, including nine goals, 4-4-2 and another win at Old Trafford. Who's this Adebayor bloke he's found? 4. Arsenal 1st, DWWW 10/12 Couldn't get past Chelsea but despatched West Ham, Newcastle and (eventually) Cardiff in the professional manner of a team with real intent. 5. Man United 7th, WWWL 9/12 Moyes questioned again after a six-win run was ended by home defeat to Spurs. After a quiet summer transfer window, January may be an interesting month for a new manager who must make the top four by May. 6. Everton 5th, WLWD 7/12 Sunderland home defeat was the surprise of the festive season, while struggle at Stoke suggests they lack a little strength in depth – but make no mistake, Martinez is doing a very good job. 7. Fulham 16th, LWLW 6/12 Curate's egg of a Christmas: two big six-pointers won, 10 goals shipped in the other two games. Mind you, it's an improvement on their form under Martin Jol. 8. West Brom 14th, DDDW 6/12 Welcome win over Newcastle after three draws for a club somewhat treading water while they wait for the right head coach – one ready to work in a strict structure. New man could literally go either way: up… or down. 9. Newcastle 8th, WWLL 6/12 Whacked eight past Palace and Stoke but edged out by Arsenal and, disappointingly, West Brom. As usual, success likely to be decided by transfer market trial and error. 10. Liverpool 4th, WLLW 6/12 Easy home wins bookended key defeats in successive six-pointers, but the Reds were far from unimpressive in 2-1 defeats at Chelsea and (especially) Man City. Need to strengthen this month. 11. Hull 10th, DLWL 4/12 Losses to Liverpool and Man United overshadowed by joyous 6-0 demolition of Fulham. Look flexible enough to avoid being dragged downwards into a dogfight. 12. Crystal Palace 18th, LWLD 4/12 Revival under Pulis has somewhat stalled with one point from two home games with Newcastle and Norwich. Expect a busy January as the new man reshapes his squad. 13. Sunderland 20th, DWDL 4/12 Surprise win at Everton and spirited comeback at Cardiff somewhat spoiled by goalless home struggles against Norwich and Aston Villa. Home form could save them or doom them, so Poyet needs a good January. 14. Stoke 12th, WLLD 4/12 Would've been easier to forget the two terrible trips, with eight shipped at Spurs and Newcastle, if Leighton Baines' late equaliser hadn't denied them a second festive home win. 15. Aston Villa 11th, LLDW 4/12 Win at Sunderland vital after home troubles against Palace and Swansea had a vocal section of Villa fans questioning Paul Lambert's regime. 16. Southampton 9th, LWLL 3/12 No shame in home defeat to Chelsea but it's one win (and five losses) in nine now. Pochettino needs purchases - especially with Wanyama waylaid. 17. Norwich 15th, DLLD 2/12 Nervy Norwich needed not to lose at Palace, after gutless Boxing Day home loss to Fulham was followed by improved show against Man United. Toothless squad too close for comfort to the relegation zone. 18. Swansea 13th, LLDL 1/12 Somewhat unlucky single-goal losses to Everton, Chelsea and Man City can't hide the fact that the Swans, with 39 points in 2013, are struggling to cope with their fixture list. Laudrup needs reinforcements. 19. West Ham 19th, LLDL 1/12 Losses to Man United and Arsenal might not hurt as much as the loss of key centre-backs. With an unbalanced squad in woeful form, it's all gone a bit Newcastle for Sam Allardyce - but can the Hammers afford to sack him? 20. Cardiff 17th, LLDL 1/12 Lost three games, a manager and all respect. Bizarre owner seems to have put his faith in a relatively untried manager with someone else's team perched just above a huge financial trapdoor. Intriguing. Moyes questions referee Webbs performance Posted: 01 Jan 2014 12:51 PM PST Goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Christian Eriksen had the visitors two goals in front at Old Trafford after 66 minutes. Danny Welbeck pulled a goal immediately after Eriksens header, however Moyes felt decisions went against his side as they went in search of an equaliser. Ashley Young had claims for a penalty when challenged by Hugo Lloris and an apparent foul on Adnan Januzaj resulted in a booking for diving, something Moyes was not happy with. I thought the team played really well, (we) certainly should have had a penalty kick and a sending off for the challenge the goalkeeper (Hugo Lloris) had on Ashley Young, he said. Scandalous, its a scandal, anywhere else on the pitch with your foot high and you follow through it would be a sending off. The goalkeeper comes out, Ashley Young gets the ball before him and he follows through, its an incredible decision that didnt go our way, in fact its probably one of the worst Ive seen. That was a stonewall penalty kick, if that isnt given as a penalty kick I dont think were going to see one again in the Premier League. We didnt finish well enough in the first half, we played well, especially in the first 30 minutes, but we got done a couple of counter attack goals. We just didnt create the cross or the finish that mightve got us the opening goal. We could have done better. All you can do is play well and hope you take the opportunities when they come. Their effort was terrific in trying to come back from 2-0 down. We didnt deserve to be behind. Well keep trying to win the next game, thats all you can do. Nemanja Vidic and Wayne Rooney both had chances to score in the closing minutes but found Lloris in good form, and United slipped to a third defeat in four at Old Trafford which saw them drop to seventh in the Premier League. Mourinho open to Mata exit in January Posted: 01 Jan 2014 12:05 PM PST Mourinho left the door open over a potential departure in the January transfer window after Chelsea's impressive 3-0 win at Southampton on Wednesday. Mata – who has been out of favour with Mourinho despite being the club's player of the year in each of the past two seasons – showed his frustration when substituted in the 53rd minute for Oscar. Brazilian Oscar and fellow substitute Willian helped swing the match Chelsea's way though, as both players, and Fernando Torres, scored in the last 30 minutes at St Mary's Stadium. The Chelsea boss said he was not aware of Mata's reaction to being substituted but added that he would like to keep him at Stamford Bridge. "I don't want him to go, that is my opinion and that is my wish – but my door is open," he said. "The club door is open too, so when a player wants to speak with us we are there waiting for them. "But if you ask me do I want to sell him, I don't want to. I didn't see the reaction, his frustration was because of the result – we have to win. "If we don't win this game then the difference to the leaders is bigger. At the end of the game, everyone including him was celebrating the victory." Mata was linked with a switch to Manchester United last year, and has seen Oscar move ahead of him in the pecking order as Chelsea's primary playmaker this season. Premier League: Man United 1 Tottenham 2 Posted: 01 Jan 2014 11:28 AM PST Togo striker Adebayor opened the scoring for Tottenham in the 34th minute when he met an Eriksen cross, becoming only the third player to score in three consecutive games at Old Trafford. Eriksen doubled their lead in the 66th minute with a well-placed header after beating his marker, but Danny Welbeck brought United back into the game with his seventh goal of the campaign a minute later. That set up a tense finish, and United pushed hard for an equaliser and threw everything forward in the closing stages. But chances for substitute Javier Hernandez, Adnan Januzaj and Welbeck were all wasted as United slipped to seventh - 11 points behind leaders Arsenal - and saw their Premier League title hopes suffer a potentially fatal blow. Boss David Moyes made four changes in attacking positions to the United line-up from their victory over Norwich, with Wayne Rooney and Welbeck returning up front. Kyle Walker and Danny Rose returned in the full-back positions for the visitors, with Etienne Capoue replacing the injured Paulinho in midfield. Welbeck and Chris Smalling both had early chances for the hosts as United attacked down the right, but Hugo Lloris made good saves to keep Tottenham in the game. The visitors had a fantastic chance to open the scoring in the 14th minute through Aaron Lennon, but the winger wasted a perfect throughball from Roberto Soldado as he fired straight at David De Gea. With their next attack, in the 34th minute, Sherwood's side opened the scoring through Adebayor with his third league goal of the season. Eriksen raced down the right before delivering a perfect cross towards the back post, where Adebayor rose unmarked to score. They should have doubled their lead five minutes later with another attack on the right. This time, Lennon raced past Patrice Evra and played a low cross into the unmarked Soldado, but the Spaniard kneed the ball wide from six yards. After a quiet start to the second half, the visitors doubled their lead in the 66th minute as Eriksen netted his second goal in three games. The Dane anticipated the flight of a deflected Lennon cross far better than Antonio Valencia, stealing in front of the United man to head past De Gea from five yards. However, United halved the deficit immediately through Welbeck. Januzaj played a neat pass behind the Tottenham defence for the striker, and he latched onto the ball and calmly lifted it over Lloris. The goal woke United up and Januzaj had a fantastic chance to level the game late on, but his long-range effort curled just wide of Lloris' right hand post. That sparked a flurry of late chances to level, the best of which fell to Rooney and Nemanja Vidic, but they both found Lloris in excellent form as he saved well.
