Holloway: Zaha wasting potential Posted: 25 Jan 2014 05:35 PM PST Holloway, who coached Zaha at Crystal Palace before the talented winger moved to Manchester United this season, claimed the England international has more natural talent than any footballer I have played with or managed. But the former Crystal Palace and Blackpool manager warned Zaha that he must start growing up and quickly show why United paid 15million for him midway through last season, otherwise he could be labelled a waste of money. Wilf has gone from being a big fish in the small pond of the Championship and is now a minnow in the shark-infested waters of the Premier League, Holloway wrote in his column for the Mirror. And its been a struggle. I hope he uses his sabbatical in South Wales to show United exactly what they are missing. Believe me, he is one helluva (sic) player. And he is also a terrific lad, a managers dream, in my experience. So, I was surprised by reports during the week that he had been dropped to the bench for a reserve game because he turned up late. That isnt the Wilfried Zaha I know and I am sure that he would not have shown such a lack of respect to his club on purpose. But, as a manager, I cant condone any player failing to get to a game on time. And, again, its all about attitude. Or lack of attitude. I will always be grateful to Wilf for the role he played in helping Palace to win promotion to the top flight when I was the manager at Selhurst Park. And thats why I have his best intentions at heart when I say the time has come for him to take stock of his life and career and grow up a little bit. Because, believe me, there is nothing more tragic than unfulfilled potential. Holloway expressed regret at not preparing Zaha more ahead of the latters move to United but claimed the Ivory Coast-born winger could not blame anyone else for his lack of playing time at Old Trafford. I wish now that I had taken him to one side after a Crystal Palace training session and warned him that it (the United transfer) wasnt the end of his journey to the top of the game, it was just the first step, the 50-year-old said. Wilf is joining Cardiff on loan after playing just 28 minutes of Premier League football in five months at the champions under David Moyes. No doubt, some people will now label the lad a waste of money. But... Wilf has got the world at his feet. At the age of 21, he has more natural talent than any footballer I have played with or managed during a lifetime in the game. What he has got to prove now is that he also has the temperament. Wilf has only one person to blame for the fact that his only start in the famous red shirt so far was a Capital Cup tie against Norwich in October: Himself. He hasnt been a regular in the United team simply because he hasnt done what his manager has demanded from him. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Moyes not expecting further January deals Posted: 25 Jan 2014 03:16 PM PST Mata completed his club-record 37.1million move from Chelsea on Saturday and Moyes believes that the signing of the Spain playmaker is the first step in his bid to build a side in his own image. Southampton defender Luke Shaw and Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye are just two of the many players who have also been linked with a move to Old Trafford this month, but Moyes does not expect any further additions before the transfer window closes. However, the Scot is keen to continue strengthening the squad he inherited from Alex Ferguson, although he admitted that it would more likely be at the end of the season. I dont think well have any more in January, the United boss told the clubs official website after confirming the Mata deal. Im still working on it and looking to do things we know exactly what wed like to do and if it changes in the last week, which sometimes it can do, then well try. I hope it will be the first of some new signings that will arrive, but more likely in the summer. United have struggled in the Premier League this season and are 14 points adrift of leaders Arsenal after seven defeats in their opening 22 games. Mata is the first piece of the jigsaw for Moyes, and he has vowed to put a side together that is capable of moving them back up the table and delivering the style of football the clubs fans have become accustomed to. I want to build an exciting team, thats always the way Ive wanted my football to be played and Ive not known it any other way, he added. I want to win and give the supporters something to shout about because Ive not done that often enough. What I will say is that this is the first of many more to come in time. Im looking forward to Juan being the start of it. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 25 Jan 2014 01:32 PM PST The Spain international moves to Old Trafford for a fee of 37.1million, ending his two-and-a-half-year stay at Stamford Bridge. Mata, Chelseas player of the year for the past two seasons, had joined the club from Valencia in June 2011 and made 135 appearances. He had fallen out of favour since the return of Jose Mourinho as manager at the start of the season, making just 11 Premier League starts this term. He told the clubs official website: I am thrilled to be joining United. I have enjoyed some very happy years at Chelsea but the time has come for a new challenge. United is the perfect place for me and I am excited at the chance I have to be part of the next phase in the clubs history. Chelsea is a top club and I have many friends there but you cannot turn down the chance to join Manchester United. I look forward to helping the manager and the team be successful in the coming years. The move represents the big-money transfer that Manchester United fans have craved ever since new boss David Moyes took over from Alex Ferguson ahead of the start of the 2013-14 campaign. Exits from both the FA Cup and the League Cup in the last month have heaped pressure on Moyes, who has also seen his side slip to seventh in the Premier League. The Scot, though, believes he has signed a player of real quality. Juan is one of the finest playmakers in the game today and its a real pleasure to have secured his signature, he said. Hes been instrumental in Chelseas recent success, with a notable 28 assists and 32 goals in his last two Premier League seasons. I have been impressed with the excitement he has shown to be part of the new Manchester United. I know our fans have admired Juan for some time now he has always played well against us and I know they will be delighted to see him in the red of United, starting on Tuesday. Mourinho admitted that the move was a good one for all parties. I and everyone at Chelsea have massive respect for Juan and his big talent, and when he told us of his wish to move on because he wanted to play more, we did not want to deny him this opportunity, he told Chelseas official website. We want him to be successful in his career and as well as that, this transfer makes huge financial sense to us at Chelsea. We are pleased Juan will stay in England - even with a rival club. He is happy in this country and it is good the Premier League retains such a talented player. Juan moves with our full blessing and I can speak on behalf of everyone at the club in thanking him for his fantastic service, and wishing him well for his future. United sit 14 points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, with Mata in line to make his debut when they face Cardiff City in the Premier League on Tuesday. Posted: 25 Jan 2014 07:56 AM PST The Spain international is set to move for a fee reported to be in the region of 37million and will become the clubs most high-profile arrival under David Moyes. Tweets from Uniteds official account on Friday read: CONFIRMED: #mufc has reached agreement with Chelsea for the transfer of Juan Mata for a club-record fee. The deal for Mata is subject to a medical and the agreement of personal terms. A further announcement will be made in due course. Earlier in the day, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho had confirmed Mata was headed to Old Trafford. We allowed Juan to travel and have a medical with United and things are going in a good direction, so I think sooner rather than later things will be finalised, said the Portuguese. It is an offer that is a good offer for him and us. Many clubs feel that you dont sell to a rival club. We feel and we think differently. Mata, Chelseas player of the year for the past two seasons, had been strongly linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge after falling out of favour following the return of Mourinho as manager. He has made just 11 Premier League starts this term, but will now seemingly have the chance to relaunch his career with the reigning Premier League champions, who are desperate to improve on their current position of seventh. United sit 14 points behind leaders Arsenal and are in need of a lift having also been knocked out of both domestic cup competitions this month. The club struggled to recruit new faces in the previous transfer window, adding only Guillermo Varela and Marouane Fellaini to their ranks. Mata joined Chelsea from Valencia in June 2011 and has scored 33 goals in 135 appearances for the London club. Uniteds current record signing is Dimitar Berbatov, who arrived from Tottenham in a 30.75m deal in September 2008. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
