Dante claims he is Man United transfer target

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 02:37 PM PST

The 30-year-old centre-back revealed United's apparent interest in an interview with Fox Sports Brazil, although his agent Marcus Marin has moved to play down talk of the Brazil international moving to Old Trafford. The Guardian quotes Dante as telling the TV station in his homeland: "I'm thankful for the Manchester United interest. It will all be sorted out by the end of the month. "We have to wait until 31 January because there is a lot going on." Despite his client's comments, Dante's agent, Marin, is focused on securing a new deal with Bayern. "There is no agreement with Manchester United. He is not going to leave Bayern in the window," said Marin. "At the moment Bayern are the only people we have spoken to anyway because we are talking over a new contract. "We are still waiting for an answer from them and, although things happen very quickly in football, until that situation changes, we cannot speak to anyone else anyway. "We are hoping that something can be resolved before the World Cup."

Poyet determined to deny Man United final place

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 09:23 AM PST

The Premier League strugglers hold a 2-1 advantage ahead of the semi-final second leg against Manchester United, but David Moyes' side are strong favourites to reach the final. Poyet believes Sunderland have already been written off despite being in front in the tie, with many expecting a mouth-watering Manchester derby in the final. And the Uruguayan has called on his players not to let the opportunity to play in a Wembley showpiece pass them by. He said: "We need to play very well that's for sure. We're going to have to be spot on, we're going to have to be strong mentally. "Especially because of the way that we have to play and where we have to play. I have a feeling too many people think that the final has to be Manchester United and Manchester City. We want to try and not let that happen, we have to try and make sure we are in there. "I think it's the first time for a while - apart from maybe the FA Cup game (against Carlisle United) - that I'm going to go into the game myself personally with a different approach, because this a game to really, really enjoy. "I'm sure that if it doesn't go my way I'm going to be devastated, but this a great opportunity. "So many fans, a great stadium opposition desperate to get a trophy and we've got the chance to go there with a little advantage, so let's enjoy this one. The league has been so different, so let's enjoy it. "I wouldn't let that chance go past if I was a player. I would make sure (I do) everything possible and more to get to the final and give the fans something to cheer about and to be happy and proud of the team."

Vidic appeal against Chelsea red rejected

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 08:16 AM PST

Vidic was sent off in the first minute of stoppage time during United's 3-1 weekend defeat at Stamford Bridge following a tackle on Eden Hazard. On Tuesday, the Football Association revealed that an Independent Regulatory Commission had decided to uphold referee Phil Dowd's decision to show Vidic a straight red card. Vidic will now be unavailable for the second leg of United's League Cup semi-final with Sunderland on Wednesday, which Moyes' team approach with a 2-1 deficit from the first leg. In addition, the 32-year-old will miss the Premier League visit of Cardiff City next Tuesday and a trip to Stoke City on February 1. A statement on the FA website read: "Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic has had his claim for wrongful dismissal rejected by an Independent Regulatory Commission. "Therefore, the player's three-match suspension commences with immediate effect."

Neville: Mata would boost United top-four chances

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 03:50 AM PST

The Chelsea playmaker has cut a frustrated figure at Stamford Bridge this season after starting 11 of his side's 22 Premier League games. Rumours have circulated that United manager David Moyescould launch a bid in the region of £37 million for Mata in an attempt to reinvigorate the team's flagging hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. The defending Premier League champions are seventh, six points adrift of Liverpool in fourth and 14 behind leaders Arsenal. Neville - who spent his entire 19-year professional career at Old Trafford - originally toldSky Sports thathe does not believe the Spaniard fits the traditional mould of a United player, but believes he could provide fresh impetus to the squad. He posted via his official Twitter account: "My quote - 'Does he fit with what I would call the typical philosophy of Manchester United?' I would say no. Not he won't fit. "Positives of signing a player like him are obvious- lift everyone (spark), creativity, knows PL (Premier League), 4th place chances go up - fantastic player." The 38-year-old had questioned where Mata would play should he join United, suggesting Moyes would have to employ a new system. "The first question, I think, is where are you going to play?" He said on Sky Sports' Monday Night Footballshow."Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie are up top if they are fit so where are you going to play him? Are you going to play him off the left or off the right? "We've seen (Shinji) Kagawa play off the left, we saw Kleberson play at times off the left, we've seen (Juan Sebastian) Veron at Manchester United move to the left because you can't play central midfield. "Maybe they have to change the philosophy and maybe that's what David Moyes is thinking. Maybe he wants to play narrow wide players and maybe a three in midfield."

Fletcher a doubt for Sunderland second leg

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 03:15 AM PST

The striker was restricted to less than 20 minutes in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Southampton, coming on as a substitute for Jozy Altidore. Gus Poyet's men head into the encounter at Old Trafford with a slender 2-1 advantage from the first leg, but face the prospect of being without the Scot for the return match as Sunderland attempt to reach Wembley. "We were trying not to play him at all (against Southampton) because he had a problem, a little injury," Poyet said. "We would not have involved him if we had been doing well. "I asked him to take a risk for him and for his team-mates, and credit to him, he did. "It's a tricky injury, and he could have made it worse, but he was happy in his warm-up and he gave us a very good 20 minutes." Sunderland go in search of a first League Cup final appearance since losing 1-0 to Norwich City in the 1985 showpiece in high spirits, having lost just once in their last 10 matches in all competitions.

Marchisio cools talk of January transfer

Posted: 21 Jan 2014 02:45 AM PST

The 28-year-old is a rumoured transfer target for Manchester United, with manager David Moyes having travelled to Cagliari to see Juve in action earlier this month. However, Marchisio stressed he would not get distracted by the speculation, seeing his long-term future in Turin. "Every summer things get talked about but I'm happy about that as I have a long contract at Juventus and I intend to honour it," he toldRai Sport. "Our 12 wins in a row show that this Juventus team is having an excellent season. Roma have the same number of points that we had this time last season and have also hit a good rhythm." Juve meet Roma at the Stadio Olimpico in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals on Tuesday, and Marchisio believes his side will need to be at the top of their game to progress. "It will be a great game," he added. "Roma are a great team with quality players and, even beyond Francesco Totti, they have players you need to keep an eye on. "We really want the Coppa Italia trophy that we have been missing during two years of victories." Juve have not won Italy's premier cup competition since 1995.

Cagliari chief hints Astori may leave on cheap

Posted: 20 Jan 2014 09:45 AM PST

Astori - who has also been linked with Manchester City, Southampton and AC Milan - has five Italy caps to his name and is one of Cagliari's most prized assets after Radja Nainggolan's departure to Roma. Cellino has been routinely frustrated by his blocked attempts to finance a new stadium for the Sardinia-based club - who have been forced to play home games in Trieste, some 670 miles away. And with a perceived lack of ambition leading Cellino to let Nainggolan move to Roma this month, he has claimed he would happily allow Astori to follow. United manager David Moyes was spotted at Cagliari's recent defeat to Juventus, with Astori and Juve midfielder Claudio Marchisio thought to be the subject of his attention. "If tomorrow I was asked about Astori or others, I would let them go," Cellino told L'Unione Sarda. "I cannot protect my boys and so I could give them all away, as was the case for Nainggolan. "Radja was wanted by PSG and Manchester City, but I succumbed to Roma. He did not want to leave, he had to. "Zenit were willing to pay €25m last summer, Juventus offered €20m and were prepared to let me have him until the end of the season (on loan). "But he could not stay here. How can he grow in a team with no ambition? "He has gone to Roma. There he will grow with champions like (Francesco) Totti and (Daniele) De Rossi, a good coach and a club that already loves him."

League Cup Preview: Man United v Sunderland

Posted: 20 Jan 2014 09:32 AM PST

Moyes' men have been off the pace in the Premier League, going down 3-1 at Chelsea on Sunday to leave the defending champions seventh, while United were also knocked out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle by Swansea City in a poor start to 2014. The UEFA Champions League and League Cup are Moyes' only realistic hopes of further silverware this term and his charges will need to come from behind to progress in the latter, having been beaten 2-1 by Sunderland in the first leg at the Stadium of Light. A Ryan Giggs own goal and Fabio Borini's penalty handed Gus Poyet's men the upper hand a fortnight ago and Moyes will be desperate to add the League Cup to the United trophy cabinet - the Scot has already won the Community Shield - and lift some of the gloom around Old Trafford. United have lost four of their last seven home games in all competitions and will likely need to be on top form for the visit of Poyet's men, who have lost just one of their last 10 outings. Despite Sunday's setback at Stamford Bridge, Phil Jones remains confident United can salvage something from the club's season - starting on Wednesday against Sunderland. "I don't think we're a long way away from the teams at the top (of the Premier League)," Jones told the club's official website. "Now we have to bounce back and we have an important game on Wednesday night. "We're not a million miles away, I'm telling you, but we need to stick together if we're going to turn it around." One of the main threats to United's progression is likely to be former Manchester City winger Adam Johnson, who has five goals from his last four games. After scoring a hat-trick against Fulham a week ago, Johnson was Sunderland's hero on Saturday as he netted the equaliser against Southampton in a 2-2 comeback to earn a point and make it four games unbeaten. Excluding an unlikely West Ham comeback, progression for either side would set up a final against Manchester City at Wembley, with Sunderland eyeing their first League Cup success and United their fifth. Despite never having won the competition, Sunderland have reached the semi-finals on three occasions, making the final once back in 1985.

Gaitan will respect Benfica contract

Posted: 20 Jan 2014 03:21 AM PST

The 25-year-old played in Benfica's 2-0 win over Maritimo on Sunday, a win that maintained their two-point lead at the top of the Primeira Liga. Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for the winger, with David Moyes said to be considering a bid for his services, but Gaitan is only concentrating on his current club. The Argentinian has two years left on his contract in Lisbon and intends to honour that deal. "I am at Benfica, I have a contract until 2016, I want to respect that," he said. "If any offer like that which came for (Nemanja) Matic (who moved to Chelsea last week), we'll see. "For now, (I am) just thinking about playing football, and the rest does not depend on me. "Benfica has great players, we feel much more confident than when the league began, and we hope to continue in that way." Gaitan arrived in Portugal from Boca Juniors in May 2010.

Vidic admits Man United out of the title race

Posted: 20 Jan 2014 12:33 AM PST

Samuel Eto'o's hat-trick ensured David Moyes' men were beaten for the seventh time in the top flight this season - a result that leaves them 14 points adrift of league leaders Arsenal. While Moyes refused to give up on the title after the game, captain Vidic - who was sent off in the closing stages at Stamford Bridge - believes the gap is too great. "We are too far behind and we have now to focus on the top three or four," he told Sky Sports. "We have to be positive, (on Sunday) we didn't play a bad game. They had three shots and scored three goals and that's the difference in the game, we have been punished for every mistake we made. "It's not going to be easy, we have to now fight to achieve the Champions League. We have to stay positive and stick together and work hard. With a bit of luck hopefully we can achieve that." Vidic was dismissed for a reckless challenge on Eden Hazard to compound a difficult day for Moyes, whose side will look to overturn a 2-1 deficit in Wednesday's League Cup semi-final second leg against Sunderland. In what has been an uncomfortable first campaign at the clubfor Moyes, Vidic said his team-mates are fed up of seeing the Scot blamed for United's underwhelming season. "We cannot always speak about managers, the players are tired of speaking about that because the manager is trying to do the best he can," he added. "Tactically we did well (on Sunday)."
