Moyes delighted with resilient United

Moyes delighted with resilient United

After a lacklustre first half, Moyes introduced Danny Welbeck at the interval and the striker went on to score the only goal of the game just before the hour to secure Uniteds fourth straight Premier League victory. The Scot was delighted with the impact Welbeck had on the game, but refused to get carried away as the champions moved up to sixth in the top flight. Its six points from two games in three days, Moyes said. We kept going, we kept at it and we got our rewards in the end. I think today they (the players) found a way of winning the game. I am delighted with how they are doing but I dont think its anything to shout about. Danny Welbeck changed the game. Obviously his goal made the difference but Dannys performance changed the game. Hes a big part of Manchester United. I think Danny is a really good good player, what he now needs to become is become a good finisher, and today he done great rounding the goalkeeper. Uniteds sixth away Premier League win of the season moves them level on points with Everton, although Roberto Martinezs team have a game in hand.

Hughton rues missed opportunities

Posted: 28 Dec 2013 10:16 AM PST

After dominating the first half, Norwich were left to rue failing to take what chances they did create as United substitute Danny Welbeck grabbed the only goal of the game just before the hour. Norwich have now not won in four Premier League matches, and they have only scored twice in that spell. And with other teams around them in the table also stumbling, Hughton was disappointed not to take advantage and extend the gap to the bottom three. He felt, though, that his side had done enough to at least take something from the game. It is a massive disappointment, its certainly a game we didnt deserve to lose, said the Norwich boss. On the balance of play, I thought we were excellent in that first half. When youre having the best period in the game which we were in the first half youve got to try and capitalise on it and we didnt do that. I thought we were good in the second half as well. Its a fortunate goal for them, but when that falls to someone of Welbecks quality you expect them to score. Over the 90 minutes, I thought we were the better team, but of course it is goals that win games.

Premier League: Norwich City 0 Manchester United 1

Posted: 28 Dec 2013 08:54 AM PST

Having replaced Ryan Giggs at half-time, the 23-year-old England striker made an almost immediate impact, netting his fifth goal of the campaign in the Premier League to move United into sixth place in the table. Norwich had dominated the opening half but wasted a host of chances to take the lead, and their profligacy eventually came back to haunt them as United clicked into gear after the break. Welbeck had a bit of luck in the build-up to the goal, as the ball bounced off Javier Hernandez into his path, but he showed great composure to open the scoring from there. The introduction of Ricky van Wolfswinkel failed to have a similar effect for the hosts, who slipped to a fourth home league defeat of the season. Norwich manager Chris Hughton made three changes to the side beaten by Fulham with Russell Martin, Ryan Bennett and Wes Hoolahan coming in for Steven Whittaker, Johan Elmander and the suspended Michael Turner. With Wayne Rooney ruled out with a groin strain - he is expected to be back to face Tottenham on New Years Day - United boss David Moyes recalled Shinji Kagawa, with the Japan international returning as one of five changes made by the Scot as they went in search of a fourth consecutive win in the league. After a cagey start, the first chance of the game came in the 17th minute as Martin was released by Robert Snodgrass inside the penalty area and his shot was palmed into the path of Hoolahan by David De Gea, but the Republic of Ireland international failed to take advantage of an open goal. Five minutes later, De Gea was called into action again as the Martin-Snodgrass combination again worked well to release the winger behind the defence. He rolled the ball back to Gary Hooper, whose shot on the turn was parried away. Norwich continued to apply the pressure with Sebastien Bassong and Hoolahan both missing further chances, while only Hernandez could force a save from John Ruddy for the visitors. Ashley Young and Nathan Redmond both went close in the opening stages of the second half, but it was Welbeck who finally broke the deadlock in the 57th minute. The striker charged down a Bennett clearance, the ball ricocheted off Hernandez back to the substitute and he rounded Ruddy before sliding the ball into the back of the net. Hughtons attempt to lift his side late on with the introduction of Van Wolfswinkel and Elmander failed to have the desired effect, allowing United to secure a sixth away win in the league this season.

Injured Rooney tipped to face Tottenham

Posted: 28 Dec 2013 07:23 AM PST

Rooney missed Saturday's trip to Norwich City after suffering a recurrence of the groin problem that saw him sit out the League Cup quarter-final against Stoke City earlier this month. But the Premier League champions are confident that the 28-year-old will be in contention to make an immediate return when Tottenham head north to Old Trafford on Wednesday. "Wayne Rooney didn't travel to Norwich due to the recurrence of a groin strain. He should be available for #mufc vs @SpursOfficial on 1 Jan," confirmed United via the club's official Twitter account. Rooney, on target in the 3-2 win at Hull City on Boxing Day, is United's top scorer this season with 11 goals in all competitions. Manager David Moyes will be desperate to have Rooney at his disposal against Tottenham as he is already without the services of striker Robin van Persie, who is expected to return next month from a thigh problem.

Lallana denies Southampton exit talk

Posted: 28 Dec 2013 03:59 AM PST

The 25-year-old has been in superb form for Mauricio Pochettinos charges this season, notching four times in 18 Premier League appearances. His performances have seen him recognised on the international stage with Roy Hodgson calling him up for Englands friendlies with Chile and Germany in November. Lallana has reportedly attracted interest from several suitors, including reigning champions Manchester United, who are rumoured to be weighing up a bid for the talented midfielder in the January transfer window. But the Southampton captain has cooled talk of a move away from the club, and says he is enjoying his time under the stewardship of Pochettino. I cant express how happy I am at the club, he said. I am so settled. Settled at home with a young child and my family live down here. I dont think I am too comfortable either, I get challenged week in week out playing in the Premier League. It is where you want to be as a player. I am delighted and as happy as I have ever been here playing for Southampton with one of the best managers in the league. I learnt my trade in League One and the Championship and feel I have grown with the club. I am delighted and as happy as I have ever been here playing for Southampton with one of the best managers in the league.
