Hughes: Man United worthy winners at Stoke Posted: 18 Dec 2013 02:43 PM PST Second-half goals from Ashley Young and Patrice Evra denied Stoke a place in the last four of the competition for the first time in 41 years. Referee Mark Clattenburg called a halt to proceedings for just under 10 minutes as strong winds and a hail storm swept through the Britannia Stadium. Stoke never really got going and their hopes of winning only their second major trophy were ended as United stepped it up a gear in the second half. Hughes refused to criticise his players and admitted United deserved to progress to the semi-finals, where they will take on Sunderland in January. He said: "I thought we made a fair fist of it in the first half against all the elements and thought we were in decent shape. "Our organisation was good, United weren't creating too many chances. "But United, on the night, deserved to win, they just had a little bit more power and pace. "We weren't able to ask enough questions of them in the second half." Moyes pleased to see United weather storm Posted: 18 Dec 2013 02:29 PM PST Referee Mark Clattenburg took the players off the field for just under 10 minutes amid swirling winds and a hail storm during the first half of the quarter-final against Stoke City at Britannia Stadium on Wednesday. Ashley Young scored his first United goal for 17 months in the second half and Patrice Evra added a second goal as the Premier League champions secured a 2-0 win. United will now play Sunderland in the semi-finals next month as Moyes eyes a trophy in his first season at Old Trafford. The former Everton boss told Sky Sports: I think especially in the first half it was very difficult for the players to play. It was one of the worst (set of conditions he has seen), players will say to play in heavy winds is as bad as anything. The first goal was always going to make a big difference, we were in control after that and then we got the second goal and saw the game out well. Sunderland are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League, but Moyes will not be taking Gus Poyets side lightly after they beat Chelsea in the quarter-finals on Tuesday night. He said: Im glad we are through, it will be a tough semi-final against Sunderland now. Its a cup game and it shows you how Sunderland are playing that they beat Chelsea. They have a new manager now so it will be tough, but we are just glad to get through. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
United face anxious Rooney wait over injury Posted: 18 Dec 2013 12:52 PM PST Rooney missed United's League Cup quarter-final clash at Stoke City on Wednesday with an as yet unconfirmed injury. With Robin van Persie set for a month on the sidelines with a thigh strain that rules him out of the traditional busy run of December games, United manager David Moyes is anxiously awaiting developments regarding Rooney. The Premier League champions face West Ham, Hull City, Norwich City and Tottenham in the space of a 12-day period that starts with Saturday's visit of Sam Allardyce's men to Old Trafford. Rooney is the side's top scorer in the league this season with eight goals in 14 appearances and has earned regular praise from Moyes for his fine form. United are eighth in the Premier League, some 10 points adrift of leaders Arsenal. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Moyes: No offers for Zaha but loan move possible Posted: 18 Dec 2013 07:39 AM PST Zaha has found first-team opportunities hard to come by since completing his permanent move to United from Crystal Palace at the end of last season. The 21-year-old has been linked with several Premier League clubs, but United boss Moyes has not yet had any enquiries for the England Under-21 ahead of next month's transfer window. He told MUTV: "I did say to Wilf if I didn't feel he was getting enough games, I would consider it (allowing him to leave on loan). "Obviously if we've got injuries or other reasons, I wouldn't take it on board. "But the truth is we haven't had anybody phoning up and wanting to do that at the moment. "While it's like that, I am fine." Zaha has made two substitute appearances in the Premier League this term, but is yet to start a top-flight fixture. Chelsea set for January Guarin bid, agent claims Posted: 18 Dec 2013 06:22 AM PST Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen to bolster his ranks at Stamford Bridge ahead of the second half of the season, with midfield said to be an area he deems a priority. And Guarin's representative Marcelo Ferreyra has revealed that the Colombia international is Mourinho's prime target, while there is also interest from both Manchester United and Manchester City. "The interest of Chelsea is virtually official," he told Radio Caracol. "Fredy is happy at Inter and we will have to carefully evaluate the London club's project for the future. "The two Manchester clubs have also shown an interest, but he is a back-up for both of them. "There have been a number of contacts between the Nerazzuri and Chelsea officials. We are all waiting for a decision from (Inter) president Erick Thohir." Colombia international Guarin has started all 16 of Inter's Serie A fixtures this season, scoring three goals. Moyes told Welbeck to learn from Rooney Posted: 18 Dec 2013 01:18 AM PST Striker Welbeck scored twice in United's 3-0 win at Aston Villa on Sunday, his first Premier League goals since a brace at Swansea City on the opening day of the season. The 23-year-old has struggled to establish himself in the first team at Old Trafford this season, despite the regular absence of Robin van Persie due to groin, toe and thigh injuries, and found the net just once last term. A month out with a knee problem has restricted Welbeck's chances further in 2013-14, but Moyes felt the need to speak to the forward about his apparent unwillingness to go the extra mile in training to force his way into the side. And the Scot added that Welbeck need look no further than fellow United and England forward Rooney as a source of inspiration to maximise his potential. "We said that he (Welbeck) needs to be the last off the training field," Moyes stated. "Wayne's out there practising his finishing each day, whether it's taking free-kicks, shooting from tight angles or bending them in - whatever it may be, Wayne's practising. "I said 'Danny, you need to be out there every day finishing, even if it's 15 minutes at the end'. "He did (take the advice on board) and to be fair he's out (doing extra work). He's a quick boy and all round I think Danny has got an awful lot of attributes. "He just has to say 'Hey, come on, I'm going to have to take this on to another level'. We're trying to get him to do that." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Hughes dismisses calls for Januzaj protection Posted: 18 Dec 2013 12:26 AM PST Following Uniteds 3-0 win at Aston Villa on Sunday, Moyes stated that opposition players are queuing up to kick teenage winger Januzaj, adding that it is terrible that officials allow the youngster to be targeted. However, ahead of Stokes League Cup quarter-final against Moyes men on Wednesday, former United striker Hughes insisted Januzaj should not be treated any differently before suggesting that the 18-year-old already receives favourable decisions. Managers always protect their players, said the Welshman. Januzaj is a big talent and Im sure he will be a big talent for many years to come. Sometimes you have to let kids stand on their own two feet and get on with it. Januzaj seems to garner a number of fouls and get a lot of decisions. In our game (in the Premier League in October, a match United won 3-2), he got five free-kicks in a very short space of time, and at the time I didnt think they were fouls. So maybe thats a side of his game that needs to be looked at as well. |
