Moyes happy for Rooney to show aggression Posted: 26 Nov 2013 01:09 PM PST The England forward's temperament has often been called into question and he was arguably fortunate not to be dismissed in the early stages of Sunday's 2-2 draw with Cardiff City. Jordon Mutch was the victim of a petulant kick from Rooney as the players tussled for possession, but the latter escaped with a yellow card. Ahead of United's UEFA Champions League match at Bayer Leverkusen, Moyes told a press conference he was pleased to see Rooney demonstrating his hunger. "It's a big part of his game. He's an aggressive player; he plays with his heart, as well as the skills he's got in abundance," said Moyes. "That's the way he was when he was a boy at Everton with me. "A lot of people said that might have been missing from his game last season - it's certainly not missing now. "He's got the hunger back and the desire back and he's committed for everything. I'd rather have a Wayne Rooney that way than any other way." Rooney has scored eight goals for United this season and his general level of performance has impressed Moyes. "I want Wayne to have fire in his belly. I think he plays better when he's tough and aggressive," added the Scot. "I don't want to change Wayne Rooney, that's for sure. I don't want him to be kicking at anybody, but I want him aggressive, challenging and full of running. "And I think at the moment we're seeing a really good Wayne Rooney who's in top form and scoring goals as well." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Van Persie to miss Leverkusen clash Posted: 26 Nov 2013 10:34 AM PST The 30-year-old striker - who has scored seven goals in 10 Premier League appearances this season - missed Uniteds 2-2 draw with Cardiff City on Sunday with the problem. Manager David Moyes had hoped the Netherlands international, on target in a 4-2 victory in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford in September, would recover for the midweek UEFA Champions League game, but Van Persie has not made the journey to Germany, along with defender Nemanja Vidic. Robin isnt quite ready yet, Moyes said. Its not long-term, but were going to keep monitoring him. The Premier League champions will also be without Vidic, who is still recovering from concussion sustained in Uniteds 1-0 win over Arsenal on November 10. Moyes, though, has been handed a defensive boost as Phil Jones trained on Tuesday after overcoming a knock he picked up on international duty with England that forced him to miss the Cardiff game. Van Persies absence will be keenly felt as United go in search of a win that will seal progression to the knockout stages from Group A. Hyypia eyes home comforts for Leverkusen Posted: 26 Nov 2013 06:51 AM PST The sides are separated by a point at the top of Group D, with a victory for either enough to ensure their progression to the last 16. Defeat for Shakhtar Donetsk against Real Sociedad would allow both sides to go through with a draw on Wednesday, but Hyypia feels his charges have what it takes to take secure all three points. "At home we always play well," the Finn said. "Of course we want to win (but) it is not only an important game for us. "We have to work defensively and offensively as a team. Then we have a chance." Leverkusen will be without winger Sidney Sam, who has scored 11 times in all competitions this season, while defender Sebastian Boenisch is also a doubt having missed training on Tuesday. Stefan Kiessling, who has found the net in his last two Leverkusen matches, believes his team-mates were overawed when facing the Premier League champions at Old Trafford on matchday one - a game that ended 4-2 to United. However, he does not feel that will be the case at the BayArena. "At that time we still had a lot of respect and were very anxious," said Kiessling. "Since then we have completed many good games. With the support of our fans, we will try our best to win and make sure everything goes in our favour." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Moyes: Fletcher not yet ready for return Posted: 26 Nov 2013 05:01 AM PST The 29-year-old has not played for United since December 2012 due to a bowel problem and has been limited to appearances for the Under-21 side, completing a fixture earlier in November. Moyes feels Fletcher needs to play more with the youth team before he can be considered for a return to first-team action. "I don't think he's quite ready yet," Moyes told the club's official website. "He has a bit to do in terms of more reserve games. It's great to see him training regularly, that's a big thing. He's beginning to look like a footballer again, and that in itself is a real plus for him." Moyes is also currently without Michael Carrick due to an Achilles injury but is eager to take his time with Fletcher's return, due to the severity of ulcerative colitis - a form of inflammatory bowel disease. "I wouldn't want to put a date on (a return) because of the condition," he added. "It's something we just have to take as we go along. He's training well and looking good, so we'll try to ensure that continues. "I would hate to put a date on things and I'd need to check in with the doctors as well that everything is going to plan."
