Debrief: Soldados solo struggle, Moyes midfield mess Samirs superb showing Posted: 24 Nov 2013 01:14 PM PST Soldado struggling as focal point of Spurs' attack Absolutely battered at the Etihad, Tottenham's mean defence couldn't bail the team's attack out this week as Manchester City continued their devastating home form by winning 6-0. Spurs are in the league's bottom five for goals scored this season with only nine mustered from 12 games. Focus will therefore inevitably turn to Roberto Soldado, who cost £26million from Valencia but has managed one less goal than fellow countryman Alvaro Negredo despite starting three games more and with the benefit of three penalties scored. Soldado had a stinker at the Etihad, in stark contrast to the former Sevilla man at the opposite end of the field. While Negredo scored one brilliant goal and directly contributed to another, which eventually went in as a Sandro own goal, Soldado had to feed off scraps and only managed one shot off target, before he was hauled off. Spurs have often struggled to get the ball to their chief marksman this season - and in that sense Soldado can't take all the blame for a slow start. That said, at the moment the 28-year-old doesn't look like he suits Spurs' style of play at all - he doesn't make the kind of runs necessary and isn't a target man who can hold the ball up and bully defenders. That will worry Andre Villas-Boas. Big clubs could soon start to sniff around N'Zonzi With a goal and an assist on the way to Stoke's 2-0 win against 10-man Sunderland, Steven N'Zonzi once again proved his worth to Mark Hughes' slowly redeveloping side. While the post-Pulis reformation taking place at the Britannia Stadium owes no small debt to some of Hughes' new recruits - Erik Pieters and Marko Arnautovic have both already shown themselves to be worthy captures - N'Zonzi is the player you watch time and again and can't help but think he could do a job at a club with far loftier ambitions, with the greatest respect to Stoke. A midfielder with character, bite and silky technique, N'Zonzi has that virtue present in all great midfielders in that he wants to be involved and is keen to stamp his own personality on games. In the 3-2 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford N'Zonzi was one of Stoke's best players and arguably the game's best midfielder, performing his defensive duties and also looking to push forward, take people on and build play where possible. Against Sunderland the Frenchman had a major say on the game's outcome, and although his final third passing can still improve, it would be no surprise if N'Zonzi is a player a few teams are looking at in the January sales. Moyes' midfield remains a work in progress Would Gary Medel walk into Manchester United's midfield? Possibly. Would Peter Whittingham? Okay, perhaps not, but it says something about the champions' ongoing problems in the middle of the park that not only were they outpassed by a newly-promoted team, but that there were genuine questions as to whether one of Malky Mackay's signings might have been a more suitable fit at Old Trafford. Chilean international Medel cost around £16.5million less than Moyes' own marquee midfielder Marouane Fellaini, but you probably wouldn't have guessed it given the pair's respective performances. Fellaini has made a difficult start to life in red, something his manager admitted to in the buildup to the 2-2 draw in Wales, and while his performance was by no means his worst since leaving Everton, neither he nor Tom Cleverley took control of the game in the absence of the injured Michael Carrick. Both Medel - who impressed at Wembley as Chile beat England 2-0 - and Whittingham completed more passes on the day as United struggled to get a grip in the game's engine room, leaving Moyes to lament two more points dropped in the title race. Since his appointment, Moyes has consistently said he needs time to get to know his players. Unfortunately for him, the player he knows best is starting to become one of his biggest concerns. Nasri silently earning his stripes When Samir Nasri jumped out of the way of Robin Van Persie's match-winning free kick in a 3-2 for Manchester United at the Etihad last season, the French midfielder came in for huge criticism from Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville. "He goes missing" Neville puffed in an attack that pulled no punches, and many of a sky-blue disposition agreed with him. At one point, it seemed as though Nasri's days at City were numbered. Under Manuel Pellegrini, however, Nasri has quietly shown the form that made him the subject of such a high profile hijacking from Arsenal back in 2011. In City's 6-0 win over Spurs, which Nasri may have enjoyed with extra relish, being a former Gunner, Nasri continued his trend this season of silently and efficiently performing well, knitting together play down the left and making more ball recoveries than any other player on the field bar Sandro. Nasri is in the Premier League's top ten for key passes per game this season with 2.3, and has completed 90.5% of his passes in a campaign that has seen him remind people of his qualities. He still has a tendency to drift out of games every now and then, but while Aguero, Negredo, Toure and Co. pick up the plaudits, Nasri too deserves praise. Moyes rues set-piece struggles Posted: 24 Nov 2013 12:58 PM PST The Premier League champions twice led in the Welsh capital through Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra only for striker Fraizer Campbell to peg his former team back in the 33rd minute and substitute Kim Bo-Kyung to head a stoppage time equaliser from Peter Whittinghams free-kick - the midfielders deliveries having caused them problems all afternoon. Not for the first time this season, Moyes was faced with points dropped due to set-piece frailties. Im disappointed, he said. Its similar to Southampton (a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford last month) where we had the game in our control with a minute to go and conceded from a set-piece. Its cost us, ultimately. I thought we could have played better. We didnt have a lot of rhythm in the second half but this has been a tough place to come for teams. Were on the back of international duty so I probably would have taken the result however it came today but Id have like it (the performance) to have been better, more fluent and it wasnt to be. The result leaves United in sixth position, seven points shy of leaders Arsenal a particular disappointment given the rousing performance that saw off Arsene Wengers team at Old Trafford before the international break. United remain unbeaten in their last seven Premier League games, winning five of those, but Moyes conceded their below par start to the season has left them with little room for further slip-ups. Weve been on a pretty good run but thats a blow because we cant keep dropping points, two points in games when youre where we are, he added. We should have won it. I know we can play better but we should have won the game. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Mackay pride at Cardiff display Posted: 24 Nov 2013 12:05 PM PST Former United striker Fraizer Campbell led the line impressively and netted an equaliser for the hosts after Wayne Rooney gave United a 15th-minute lead. Patrice Evra headed home Rooneys corner on the stroke of the interval but Cardiff got the result they deserved at the death to edge three points clear of the Premier League relegation zone when Kim Bo-Kyung converted Peter Whittinghams stoppage-time free-kick. I was delighted with our performance, said Mackay. I think our first-half performance was possibly one of our most complete performances of the season so far, in the way we played and also (having) the belief to play against a team like Manchester United the champions and go and play like that. So Im delighted with the performance from the first minute to the last. It probably felt like a defeat when they scored in the last minute of the first half. I was really disappointed with that for the team because of the way we played. But second half, the goal at the end was thoroughly deserving of the performance overall and the chances we had. Cardiff maintained an impressive high tempo throughout, recalling their excellent early season victory over Manchester City, and Mackay was keen to underline that craft and guile sits alongside blood and sweat in his teams armoury. Theres just a work ethic that we have at the club in terms of training and in terms of playing, he said. I want the players who have a huge work ethic at the football club but they have to have technique and they have to have talent. I take the work ethic as a given. What I loved more about the team today and the way weve played this season is the belief theyve show in their ability to play at this level and work their way up the pitch with the ball. Thats the confidence that theyre showing to compete at this level and compete well. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 24 Nov 2013 11:23 AM PST Rooney was only booked after kicking out at Cardiff midfielder Jordon Mutch before opening the scoring with a quarter of an hour played. He remained at the centre of the action, sending in the left-wing corner from which Patrice Evra restored Uniteds advantage following a coolly taken equaliser from the excellent Fraizer Campbell. Substitute Kim Bo-Kyung sent the Cardiff City Stadium into raptures with a stoppage-time equaliser but much of the post-match conversation focused on Rooneys early rush of blood and Moyes felt referee Neil Swarbrick was right to display leniency. I didnt think so, Moyes told Sky Sports when asked whether Rooney should have been sent off. I thought that the boy runs across his path and theres a bit of a tussle but I didnt think it deserved any more than a yellow card. I think theres lashing out at times and I dont think that was a lash out in any way. It was more him feeling that hed been hard done by with the boy running across his path of the ball. I didnt think it was a lashing out to cause any harm. It was more of a disappointment that hed lost the ball. Cardiff defender Ben Turner cut a relieved figure after his error led to Uniteds opener but insisted Rooney had the right to be on the pitch to capitalise on his misfortune. I do think he kicked out from where I was but I think the way the games going I didnt want him sent off, he told Sky Sports. Its becoming less and less of a physical game and I think we need to keep some of that element in the game for the enjoyment of the fans. I think its nice to have a bit of that going on. Turners manager Malky Mackay agreed that a yellow card was sufficient with regards to Rooney before addressing another moment of controversy surrounding his midfielder Gary Medel. Peter Whittinghams free-kick that led to Kims late leveller was retaken due to an altercation between Marouane Fellaini and Medel, during which the Chile midfielder appeared to slap the United man across the face. Mackay felt both players shared the guilt. He told Sky Sports: He could (have been sent off) but I also look at Fellaini doing what he does normally, putting his head in someone elses face, and thats, for me, a sending off. So thats something that needs to be looked at as well. Having seen the way Fellaini marked and used his arms at times in the game not at all times but at certain points but more so putting his head into someones face, I think that also justifies having a look at. Moyes was understandably aggrieved but was also critical of his teams defending from Whittinghams set-piece. He added: If you slap somebody in the face you would expect some action to be taken and we actually lost our concentration because were set up for the free-kick, the referee goes away and spends a minute or so talking to them and sets it back up. We still should do better but it gave them two bites at the cherry because theyd actually delivered the first ball. It gave (Whittingham) another chance to get his sighters in and he certainly put in a good ball. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Premier League: Cardiff City 2 Manchester United 2 Posted: 24 Nov 2013 10:00 AM PST After Wayne Rooney had petulantly kicked out at Cardiff midfielder Jordon Mutch after eight minutes, an offence referee Neil Swarbrick deemed worthy of a yellow card when red might have been more appropriate, the England striker duly gave United a 15th-minute lead. Fraizer Campbell, who struck the crossbar after half-time, levelled matters before David Moyes men led again as Patrice Evra glanced home Rooneys 45th-minute corner. But substitute Kim darted in front of the France full-back to produce a similar finish from Peter Whittinghams free-kick in injury time - the midfielders deliveries having caused United problems all afternoon. A rapturous Cardiff City Stadium held its breath and then rejoiced as Rooney wasted a late chance to steal the points as Moyes men finished a frantic weekend of Premier League action in sixth position, seven points behind leaders Arsenal. Mutch was preferred in the Cardiff midfield to Aron Gunnarsson, with Campbell leading the line against his former club. Robin van Persies absence due to a groin injury meant that Javier Hernandez partnered Rooney in attack for United. Rooney had an effort blocked and Mutch saw his header saved before the two came together in the first-halfs early flashpoint. And the England striker was then, somewhat inevitably, the beneficiary when an error from Cardiff defender Ben Turner resulted in the champions taking a 15th-minute lead. Turners loose pass was collected by a rampaging Antonio Valencia and the Ecuador wingers cross was touched on by Hernandez for Rooney to check back and find the net, via a deflection off Gary Medel. Marouane Fellaini drew a superb save from David Marshall when he headed Adnan Januzajs 20th-minute free-kick goalwards, but the young playmaker then erred near his own area, leading to Peter Odemwingie lashing the ball over the crossbar. Cardiff equalised in the 33rd minute when Whittingham and Mutch combined in midfield and the latter released Campbell for a composed finish. Campbell, Don Cowie and Whittingham all fired over for the hosts as United laboured in defence of set-pieces, although they demonstrated no such problems attacking them when Evra glanced home Rooneys left-wing corner on the stroke of the interval. Rooneys dead-ball deliveries continued to torment Cardiff upon the resumption and Marshall was at full stretch to deny Fellaini before beating away a header from Chris Smalling. Malky Mackays team responded once more and Campbell sent an audacious lob against De Geas crossbar after Tom Cleverley had given away possession, with the rebound narrowly evading Mutch. United might have earned some breathing space when Rooney headed Valencias 59th-minute cross over, while Whittingham sent a first-time effort just wide from distance six minutes later and Cleverley almost diverted a free-kick from the same player into his own net. Danny Welbeck thrashed wastefully beyond the crossbar 10 minutes from time and the United substitute was made to rue his profligacy when Kim stole in to snatch a share of the spoils, as Cardiff edged three points clear of the relegation zone. Rooney could still have won it when he latched on to a ball over the top, but his touch was poor. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Bayer Leverkusen lose Sam for Manchester United clash Posted: 24 Nov 2013 05:02 AM PST The 25-year-old has scored 11 goals in all competitions this season, contributing five assists to help Leverkusen to second in the Bundesliga. But, after suffering the setback in Saturdays 1-0 victory over Hertha Berlin, Sam will definitely be absent for Wednesdays match against the English champions. An MRI scan on Sunday morning confirmed the worst: Sam suffered a torn muscle in his left thigh in the match at Hertha BSC, a statement on the clubs official website said. The Germany international is ruled out for the next few weeks and he is unavailable for Wednesdays Champions League clash against Manchester United. Sporting director Rudi Voller admitted the loss of Sam was a big blow for Sami Hyypias side, especially with the match against United on the horizon. Sidneys injury is bad news, he said. Its the biggest game of all the matches in our Champions League campaign. We need to get stuck in and give 100 per cent despite Sam being ruled out. The fixture pits first against second in Group A but third-placed Shakhtar Donetsk, who meet Real Sociedad, are poised to pounce on any slip-up from either side. My fitness did not dip, says Rooney Posted: 24 Nov 2013 01:27 AM PST In his much-publicised autobiography, former United manager Ferguson suggested Rooneys qualities could be swallowed up by a lack of fitness. Yet Rooney, who has recently received praise for his physical condition, insists he has statistical evidence to prove there has been no change. Rooney said of his fitness: It was the same last season. Ive got all the stats, so I know. The stats are pinned up around the training ground every day and after every game you always get your stats - and its the same with England. Its something you can monitor in terms of how much work you are doing and sometimes you do need a bit of a rest, so thats what we do. Im just saying its the same as last season but its been noticed this season. Current United boss David Moyes acknowledges Rooney may need a break in the future, after playing 161 minutes of Englands recent friendlies against Chile and Germany. With the intensity of his football and how well he is playing, I was hoping we could have got him some time off, said Moyes. Obviously, Roy (Hodgson) has to pick his teams and the games were important for him and I respect that but somewhere along the line I will need to give Wayne a breather. If I get an opportunity I might be able to give him a little bit of time off as he is incredible with his effort and work. Weve seen a Wayne Rooney we all like and all enjoy watching but we cant run him into the ground all the time. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Giggs could play on, says Moyes Posted: 23 Nov 2013 04:08 PM PST Giggs signed a one-year deal before the 2013-14 season, which also included coaching responsibilities under Moyes, and the 39-year-old Welsh midfielder, who is set to turn 40 on Friday, has made 10 appearances in all competitions in the current campaign, including six starts. While many expected Giggs to retire at the end of the season, Moyes has indicated the veteran is well placed to stay involved on the pitch for another year. He doesnt look like someone who is going to drop considerably, Moyes said on Saturday. He has made the first step into coaching and management and sometimes when you do that you say: Actually I have had enough of playing now. He doesnt look as if he is at that point yet, so who knows? And its only these sort of decisions you would make right at the end. At his age you dont consider it six months before. Despite Moyes insistence that Giggs can play on, Uniteds manager conceded he must add to his midfield stocks in the January transfer window. United were heavily linked to the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Thiago Alcantara and Ander Herrera in pre-season before they signed Marouane Fellaini from Moyes old club Everton. But United are reportedly still in touch with Athletic Bilbao in the hope of securing Herrera in January and Moyes confirmed he would look to strengthen in midfield when the transfer window opens again. We felt in the summer we would have like to have got a couple in to midfield and we only added one so it is an area we need to look at, the 50-year-old manager said. Bellamy was close to Man United switch from City Posted: 23 Nov 2013 04:05 AM PST Bellamy, who played for City between 2009 and 2011, before joining Cardiff on loan, has revealed Alex Ferguson was keen to sign him prior to his temporary switch. However, the former Wales international also explained the deal was never likely to happen because of the rivalry between United and City. "My advisor had a conversation with United in 2010, shortly before I came to Cardiff on loan," Bellamy told Wales Online. "It was great to feel wanted, and I would have loved to do it - but it was never going to be allowed to happen. "If Man City had agreed to it, then great. But point-blank they said no, and I never once pushed it. "After Carlos Tevez had moved in the opposite direction the year before, I didn't expect anything to come of it." Cardiff welcome the champions to South Wales on Sunday, having won just one of their last five Premier League matches. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Moyes: I hope to work with Ronaldo some day Posted: 23 Nov 2013 01:48 AM PST The Real Madrid and Portugal forward left Old Trafford in 2009 for a then world-record fee of £80million having spent six years with the Premier League champions. Ronaldo - who has scored 31 goals in 21 games for club and country this season - was linked with a return to United in the close season, and Moyes has revealed he hopes to work with him in the future. "Everyone at Manchester United would tell you he is the best in the business," he told MUTV. "I have not been fortunate enough to work with him but there is still hope some day it might be possible." In terms of current personnel, Moyes wants to get more out of midfielder Marouane Fellaini. Despite a modest start to his United career after his switch from Everton, Moyes believes both he and Fellaini are on the same page when it comes to the Belgium international's form. "He knows he can play better," the Scot said. "(For) a lot of people who join Manchester United - it doesn't always happen as quickly as you would like. He needed to take time but we threw him in very quickly. Ideally we would have bedded him in more gently and at the right opportunities. "But we had to put him into some big games at quite a difficult time for us." While Fellaini's first two games for United both resulted in wins he then went four matches without victory - including defeats against Manchester City and West Brom. Moyes feels Fellaini's introduction was something of a baptism of fire, but hopes he can grow to become a "bigger influence" on the team. "When he came into the team we were not playing as well as we would have hoped," Moyes added. "I think we are yet to see him properly. He can be a bigger influence. There have been a couple of games where I thought he threatened to be a big influence." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Jol: Meulensteen arrival at Fulham my choice Posted: 22 Nov 2013 09:25 AM PST Former Manchester United assistant manager Meulensteen was brought in to work alongside Jol during the international break after Fulham suffered a fourth consecutive defeat at Liverpool. The appointment led to speculation that Meulensteen would replace Jol, who is under pressure with the London club languishing in the Premier League relegation zone. However, Jol insisted it was his decision to recruit his fellow Dutchman and hopes it proves to be a shrewd move. The former Tottenham manager said: "I'm very pleased. I really thought that he (Meulensteen) was making a choice for something else; first Germany, then Qatar. "He went to Qatar and then, fortunately enough, it was maybe coincidence, I texted him again and he said that he would come back. "I thought that we needed something, more rhythm. Of course, if you play against Southampton away, or Manchester United or Liverpool, it's not easy but I thought we didn't play with rhythm anymore and we needed to play with more energy. "That's what we worked on in training and, as I said, I thought we needed something and I think he was the right guy, but now we need the results. "I think there's a good spirit, and we'll try to play in the style I want to play; quick football, offensive football, with one or two touches." Fulham were hammered 4-0 at Anfield last time out and Jol has urged his players to put that dismal performance behind them when Swansea City travel to Craven Cottage on Saturday. "That is 14 days, two weeks ago, so it's a new game coming up, new spells coming up so, of course, we want to do better," he said. "We did everything in our capabilities to improve on everything and, of course, we had international games, but we had a lot of players here and we tried to work well with them." The FourFourTwo Preview: Cardiff vs Man United Posted: 22 Nov 2013 08:57 AM PST David Moyesmade an inauspicious start to his tenure as United manager, with the club winning just two of their opening six league matches. But the reigning champions have recovered well from that start, and a 1-0 victory over Arsenal before the international break left them just five points adrift of Arsene Wenger's table toppers. United's form is even more ominous considering the side have amassed 20 points from 11 matches, and have gone on to claim the Premier League title with a lower points tally at the same stage on three occasions. Ahead of the fixture United have issues in midfield with Michael Carrick ruled out by an Achilles injury and Phil Jones almost certain to sit out with a groinproblem. Those absences could hand an opportunity to Brazilian midfielder Anderson, who will be keen to take the chance should it arise at the Cardiff City Stadium, having been linked with a departure in January recently Moyes expects to have Nemanja Vidic available after he was withdrawn in the Arsenal fixture with concussion, while Rafael (ankle) and Robin van Persie (toe andgroin) will hope to be in contention, but the fixture is likely to come too soon for Danny Welbeck (knee). Cardiff have not beaten Manchester United since a 3-0 victory in November 1960, although the sides have only met on five occasions since, with the last encounter resulting in a 4-0 home success for United in March 1975. Malky Mackay will be looking for his side to bounce back from a 2-0 setback to Aston Villa before the international break, as second-half strikes from Leandro Bacuna and Libor Kozak consigned Cardiff to their fifth Premier League defeat. That result left the Welsh side in 14th position, with 12 points from 11 top-flight fixtures this season. Mackay welcomes back close-season signing Andreas Cornelius to his squad, with the striker having only featured in two competitive fixtures for the side this season due to an ankle injury sustained in the League Cup against Accrington Stanley in August. Peter Odemwingie should also shake off a knock picked up in training in time to feature against Moyes' charges. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Vidic set for Man United return at Cardiff Posted: 22 Nov 2013 06:58 AM PST The 32-year-old was substituted in the 1-0 win over Arsenal prior to the international break after a collision with David de Gea. Moyes confirmed the defender had been given the week off to recuperate, adding that he was hopeful Vidic would be able to come back into the team at the Cardiff City Stadium. "We've given him a chance to recover. We'll bring him back and hopefully he'll be fine," the Scot said on Friday. "He's had a bad concussion, everyone saw he had a bad knock. But that's why you have a big squad at Manchester United so when injuries come around you're able to cope. "Concussion is something you have to be careful with." Reigning champions United are on an unbeaten run of nine games in all competitions, a sequence that includes their home victory over Premier League leaders Arsenal last time out. Moyes is keen for his side to continue their strong form in South Wales, adding that he never doubted their quality, even after they dropped points against the likes of Southampton, West Brom and Shakhtar Donetsk. "We're on a good run, we have confidence about us and we want to keep that going," he added. "We came off a couple of good results and sometimes you want the games to come thick and fast. You can't do anything about the international break, whether you win or lose going into it. "I never thought we were out of (the title race). We just go about our job and try to win each game." Cardiff welcome back Cornelius for United clash Posted: 22 Nov 2013 04:13 AM PST Cornelius, who arrived at the club in the close-season for a reported then-record fee, has only featured in two competitive games for Cardiff, having injured his ankle in the League Cup win over Accrington Stanley in August. Mackay confirmed the Denmark international striker has returned to the squad, explaining that this weekend's game against the Premier League champions is one that everyone at the club is anticipating. "Andreas is back in the squad and back in training. He had a good 60 minutes against Yeovil (in a behind-closed-doors friendly) last week," he said on Friday. "(Saturday's game is) another one the whole city, the fans and myself are all really looking forward to. "(Manchester United) are certainly in a good vein of form. It's one we're all relishing and looking forward to." Defender Ben Turner echoed Mackay's excitement ahead of the clash, although he insisted he will not be overawed by United's front pairing of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney. "I don't see them as the toughest test, just a different test. In the Premier League there are so many great frontmen," he said. "Every week is a different personal challenge. Every team has some of the best players to test yourself against. "They've been on an excellent run recently and will obviously provide a massive test on Sunday." Carrick extends Man United deal until 2015 Posted: 22 Nov 2013 02:38 AM PST Carrick, who has been at Old Trafford since 2006, also has an option to extend his deal for a further year. The 32-year-old is currently sidelined with an Achilles injury but has recently returned to light training as part of his recovery. He told the club's official website he is keen to add to his trophy haul at the club, which currently includes five Premier League titles, a League Cup, a FIFA Club World Cup and a UEFA Champions League. "It is great to extend my contract at this great club. I am really enjoying my football," Carrick said. "The club has gone through a few changes and working under David Moyes has been fantastic. I have won many trophies in my years playing here and I am looking forward to achieving more in the future." Manager David Moyes added: "I am delighted Michael has extended his contract. During my short time at the club it hasn't been hard to notice that Michael is a great reader of the game and has excellent passing ability. "He is an exceptional man and a true professional and it's great that he has committed himself to the club." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
