After a summer that started promisingly with the arrivals of Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera and the appointment of Louis Van Gaal, United have dragged their heels for the last two months while their direct rivals have strengthened and Saturday’s defeat against Swansea was a timely reminder that the gap between United and the elite of English football is widening.
“I am scared for United. Genuinely scared they could go into the wilderness in the same way Liverpool did in the 1990s,” Scholes said in his latest column in the Independent. “What do they need? Five players. Five proper players who can hit the ground running and turn round a situation that looks desperate. Let me be clear: I am sick of having to criticise the club to which I gave my life as a footballer. But United need to arrest their decline.” The arrival of Marcos Rojo is a step forward, though many feel the Argentine defender wasn’t Van Gaal first or even second choice but United were forced into making a signing after missing out on Thomas Vermaelen and given that their other main defensive target, Mats Hummels, is unlikely to leave Borussia Dortmund. With just over 10 days left in the transfer window, Ed Woodward must deliver or Scholes’ prediction could become reality a lot sooner than everyone, he included, expected.    |
