United vs FC Bayern All Star Match – Fan Report Pt. 1

Posted: 11 Aug 2014 09:00 AM PDT

TP2014_DUC_4825

First off a big thank you to everyone at FC Bayern and Allianz Football who made the FCBday#1 an incredibly special day. As an Allianz employee here myself in the UK I was expecting it to be a tremendous event, however I wasn't quite ready for the real once in a lifetime experience I had yesterday.

2014-08-09 12.58.422014-08-09 14.24.00

The day kicked off with tour around the Allianz Arena and a visit to the incredibly impressive FC Bayern museum. I don't want to give too much away about either of these as they are truly worth doing for yourself if you are ever in Munich. What I will say is that hearing about how the stadium was constructed and maintained was genuinely interesting and seeing the sheer amount of trophies was damn impressive

TP2014_DUC_4182The tours were really only the start of things though. Next we were shown to our seats in the press area where we had probably the most incredible view that any of the 65,000 people packed in there had. The Bayern Team 2014/15 presentation was quite the sight. It might be a cultural thing but the love and admiration the fans had for all of their players was something I don't think would of played out similarly had United held a similar sort of presentation at Old Trafford. I almost fear some of the receptions that some members of our current squad would have got had we attempted something similar.

TP2014_DUC_4968After the FC Bayern team presentation and training session the All-Star match was up and boy that was to watch. The match ended 3-3 with all players featuring apart from Mikael Silvestre (whose birthday it was – more on that tomorrow!), even Robbo brought himself on for 5 minutes. Andrew Cole and Paul Scholes scored for United with the latter unsurprisingly head and shoulders above anyone else on the pitch. Seemingly the United legends had much the same tactics as the Salford XI earlier in the week – pass to Scholsey, let him do the rest.

2014-08-09 18.16.03There are many better write ups on the actual match doing the rounds online so I want to move on to what was no doubt the coolest part of the whole experience – 'The Mix Zone'. As members of the press for the day we were given full access to the area where the players give interviews to the press and we got to meet both the current day FC Bayern team and both Legends teams.

bessiemateThe majority of the current FC Bayern team stopped by the area to speak to the reporters and sign autographs. Special mentions have to go to Pep Guardiola, Dante, Alaba, Green, Shaqiri and Lewandoski who were all very generous with their time. I did try explaining to both Manuel Neur and Bastian Schweinstiger that it wasn't actually a Bayern shirt they were signing for me but it was in actual fact a contract for United. I'm not sure how much they understood what I was saying but they both laughed and shook my hand … Sorry LVG I tried my best!

Tomorrow I will publish the second part of my write up about my time with the United Legends. Of course I will be announcing the winner of our #AskALegend competition so make sure you check it out.

VIEW FROM THE ENEMY: Chelsea fan on sacking Mourinho, re-signing Mata and upsetting Arsenal fans

Posted: 11 Aug 2014 04:30 AM PDT

In preparation for the 2014-15 season, The Republik of Mancunia has spoken to fans of all the clubs in the Premier League about last season, next season, their own clubs and their thoughts on United.

Rory Jennings has a season ticket at Stamford Bridge. Follow @ChelseaRory on Twitter.

Scott: How did you rate 2013-14 for Chelsea?

Rory: I will always be a little disappointed with any season that ends without a trophy. However it was about as good a season as you can get without adding to the silverware collection. We had some huge results and the type of performances that only a Mourinho side is capable of. Some of the results and performances were outstanding. The PSG win having lost 3-1 away was a brilliant night at The Bridge. Eto'o bagging a hat-trick against you boys, winning away at the Etihad when the world wrote us off and Giving Wenger a 1000th game he'll never forget were my personal highlights. Alongside these, Smashing Tottenham never gets old and Steven Gerrard completing his hat-trick of brilliant Chelsea related moments were particularly enjoyable. You're welcome for that by the way…

Scott: Good ol’ Stevie! Who was your best performing player?

Rory: Azpilicueta. Playing on the wrong side of defense he managed to hold his place with England's rightful left-back breathing down his neck. Mourinho said something along the lines of "I'd win the quadruple if I had 11 Azpilicueta's." I'd completely agree with that assessment.

Scott: Haha. Whaaaaaaat? You fancy him to be your most important player this season too then?

Rory: Costa is the final cog. We have been saying for a while that the only thing standing in our way is a decent centre forward and if this boy proves to be the man that we hope he is then we are going to be a force. Equally though, if he goes the same way as Fleck, Sutton, Torres, Shevchenko, Casiraghi etc, who all for different reasons, didn't have the impact that we hoped, I fear it could be another nearly season.

Scott: Are you happy with the job Mourinho is doing?

Rory: 100% unequivocally yes.

Scott: If he wins nothing again this year, is his job safe?

Rory: Probably not, unfortunately. But according to Mourinho himself, if you aren't winning cups you're job shouldn't be safe. The standards to which he holds himself demands that some silverware is collected this season.

Scott: What do you think Chelsea will achieve this season then?

Rory: The Champions League Final in Berlin doesn't sound like a bad night out does it? Being played off the pitch against Atletico at home was painful. If Costa comes good I really don't see why we can't do it. I think the Premier League is going to be incredibly tough to win this year, we are in with a very strong shout but more fans than ever are having the same thoughts.

Scott: You’ve mentioned Costa a couple of times now. Are you happy with your performance in the transfer window this summer?

Rory: Yes. We had 3 objectives. Buy a striker, replace Frank Lampard and source a left back to free up Azpilicueta to play on his rightful side. The club have addressed all these issues perfectly so its just a case of hoping that the 3 new boys are up to the job.

Scott: Are you looking forward to how much Fabregas is going to piss off Arsenal fans?

Rory: Oh yes. Well the divvy ones at least. The majority of Arsenal fans I know didn't want him back. They concede that he is a brilliant player but remember him going on strike to force a move to Barca through. They rightly don't want him. But the wallys who will hold a grudge against him are my favourite. They try to convince themselves that he is past it, they argue that Jack Wilshere is a better player than him and say that he failed at Barcelona, despite winning the league, both cups and the World Club Trophy, these people are my favourite. Singing about Ashley Cole winning the European Cup and reminding them that their former captain signed for us for his peak years may just about convince me to pay the extortionate entrance fee they charge.

Scott: We pinched your best player last season. If you could have one United player, who would it be?

Rory: Voting with my heart its Juan Mata. He will always be a special player for a lot of Chelsea fans. Some questioned his fight and commitment but he is intelligent, fashionable, passionate, brilliant, had a picture of the old Shed on his wall, was very sad to see him leave. However, if we really could get one player it would have to be Rooney. He is horrible and I feel sorry for you that such a div is going to break all of your records but if we had Rooney last year we would have won the league at a canter. A proven centre forward who runs his socks off and scores 20 odd goals a season is exactly what we need.

Scott: Imagine just how much worse we would have been without him! Can you believe United were as bad as they were last season?

Rory: Of course not. You were champions. You added Januzaj and a £30 million midfielder and had our best player of the previous 2 years for half the campaign. It's some achievement to go from top to 7th. Was hoping that you were going to do just well enough not to sack Moyes.

Scott: How do you expect United to perform this season?

Rory: Well sadly. I think you have solved a problem like David Moyes really well. I hope I am wrong but I think Van Gaal is the perfect man to move out of Moyes' shadow.

Scott: Who do you think will win the league?

Rory: Chelsea. But think its really tight. City as champions and Liverpool as best challengers will believe they can. Arsenal are certainly a force and will fear that ending nearly a decades wait for a trophy will kick them on. I also worry that with no European football you could do it. It’s one of the main reasons Liverpool were in with a shout last year, they played about 40 games. When you think how many league points are dropped after a European fixture if Van Gaal gets it right, I wouldn't be surprised to see you right up there.

Scott: Here’s hoping! Cheers Rory.

VIEW FROM THE ENEMY: QPR fan on signing Rio, United winning the league and LvG’s Ajax team

Posted: 11 Aug 2014 01:00 AM PDT

In preparation for the 2014-15 season, The Republik of Mancunia has spoken to fans of all the clubs in the Premier League about last season, next season, their own clubs and their thoughts on United.

Charles Lawley is a QPR fan who is behind 50 Shades of Andy Gray. Follow @CharlesLawley on Twitter.

Scott: How did you rate 2013-14 for QPR?

Charles: How lucky were we? Christ. Thank the lord for the playoff system, because finishing fourth was very generous of our performances. Especially in the second half of the season. And, ironically, we were a lot less convincing after Steve McClaren left our backroom staff to become Derby County, of being robbed in the playoff final fame, manager. But I don’t need to tell you guys what a useful member of the backroom staff Steve McClaren is though, do I?

Scott: Ha, yeh, he did alright for us… who was your best performing player?

Charles: Obvious choice would be Charlie Austin. He was our goals. Top scorer with 17 goals and our next highest scorer was Ravel Morrison with 6 and he was only with us from late February. National treasure, Joey Barton showed his quality, for his faults (yes, he has faults) it was clear from his performances that he is a country mile above Championship quality and he managed to go the whole season with only getting sent off once and didn’t do any shit accents. Nedhum Onuoha was also as solid as load-bearing wall. Didn’t mean to pick to pick two ex-City players there.

Scott: I’ll let you off. Which player are you expecting to be most important for you in 2014-15?

Charles: Thank God you didn’t ask me this a few weeks ago, because I was tipping Esteban Granero to come good this season. Then we sold him to Real Sociedad. So I’m going to go with Junior Hoilett. He’s got a lot of stick from the sort of fans that think calling him “Junior Toilet” is terribly witty since he joined, but I think that’s been very unfair and he’s shown flashes of his quality last season. Let’s hope, now he’s in the more prominent shop window of the Premier League, that he wants a move away bad enough to perform all season.

Scott: What do you think of signing Rio?

Charles: Don’t begrudge him signing for us, with him, Les and Anton, the only Ferdinand to never play for QPR is Archduke Franz. There’s no doubt he’s a top quality defender, but with him, Richard Dunne and Clint Hill, I fear our back line will be slower than a child born as a product of an incest.

Scott: What did you make of Morrison during his loan stint?

Charles: He had a severe case of Taarabts Syndrome. Outbursts of explosive, game-changing genius, but also went missing a lot of the time, very selfish and probably slightly too confident in is own ability. Was a good loan signing though as without his goals, we wouldn’t have gone up. Good player, but one of those who, if he was twice as good as he is, he’d be half as good as he thinks he is. Have absolutely no time for him having his first name on the back of his shirt. Almost as bad as Jay Bothroyd, who is currently playing in the Thai league with “Jaybo” printed on the back of his shirt.

Scott: Ha, amazing. Are you happy with the job ‘Arry is doing?

Charles: Ugh. He can’t go because he got us up and I’m sick of us firing managers. I want us to stick with Redknapp. But then again I would have probably stuck with Hughes. And Warnock. And Paul Hart. He’s a good motivator but his tactical limitations are there for all to see. A QPR supporting friend of mine told me he reckons Redknapp will play with three at the back this year, he’s now seeking treatment for crack cocaine addiction.

Scott: Can’t be too hopeful for next season then? How do you think QPR will get on?

Charles: I think we’ll struggle. I think the best we can hope for is a last minute relegation escape, a la 2011/12 (probably more of a fonder memory for me, than it is for you guys. Sorry about that.) Won’t do anything in the cup. We’re not a cup team. Look it up, since the turn of the century we’ve done worse in the cup than the girls from 2 Girls 1 Cup.

Scott: Yes! There weren’t many United fans sad about your relegation the following year after that day. Are you happy with your club's performance in the transfer window this summer?

Charles: Probably not the best website to question Rio Ferdinand’s ability, is it? Caulker is more like what I was hoping for. Not the most exciting signing ever made. We’re also being linked with Ronaldinho, hope that comes off, not for us but for him. What kid growing up on the beaches of Porto Alegre didn’t one day dream of playing for Queens Park Rangers? Disappointing that Remy looks on his way out as it would be good to have more than one player on the books who knows how to score a goal. Also sad that Granero’s left because it has made me look a right dick.

Scott: If you could have one United player, who would it be?

Charles: Juan Mata, two reasons: a) He’s world class, absolutely exceptional – I’d say, on his day, better than Bale. b) I know how much it pissed off Chelsea fans when he signed for you… imagine what they’d do if he signed for us.

Scott: Can you believe United were as bad as they were last season?

Charles: You think that’s bad? I tell you what, if we finish 7th in the Premier League season, you won’t catch us flying a banner-carrying-plane over Loftus Road. Mainly because we are too close to Heathrow and it will probably violate their air space.

Scott: How do you expect United to perform this season?

Charles: You’ll win it or be very close to winning. As well as being a QPR fan, I’m also an Ajax fan. I lived in the Netherlands in the mid-90s and van Gaal’s Ajax team was what made me fall in love with football. I’d say the Champions League winning Ajax side van Gaal built was better than any Manchester United side Sir Alex Ferguson ever had. And I’m not saying that as a dig, because United have had some unbelievable sides, I just think that 1995 Ajax team was that good, better than your 99 or 08 sides, in my opinion. But what do I know? I thought Granero was set to be a QPR legend. Obviously van Gaal builds projects, I hope if there aren’t fireworks initially that Untied fans will be patient with him and realise that the structures of success at Bayern and Barca are down to him and faith and patience in him will be rewarded.

Scott: I bloody hope so. After the disaster of Moyes, I imagine fans will just be grateful to have someone who knows what they’re doing. Finally, who do you think will win the league?

Charles: You will. And I think you’ll play great football doing it. If not you then City or Chel… no, I can’t do it. You or City.
