Hit the Glazers where it hurts

Posted: 18 Aug 2014 11:41 PM PDT

protestsThe transfer window closes in two weeks and we are yet to see last year’s problems on the pitch addressed. That is down to either two things; we are not trying, or we are trying and failing. On Saturday, we should have had a team out that could have won the game and that could have won the league but we don’t do that anymore. We lack ambition in the transfer window. I believe it is the former.

Ed Woodward had yet another busy summer this year, he left the tour early again. Last year the reasons were “Urgent transfer business”. I won’t dwell too much on last summer’s debacle as that was his first year in the job and I will give him the benefit of the doubt but now that he’s fully settled in I want to talk about this summer.

This year the reasons for leaving the tour early for “General business reasons”. Whilst he has been bringing in all these sponsorship deals such as Adidas and Nissin Foods Groups, I believe he seems to care more about revenue and the commercial aspect of the club rather than benefiting the team and sorting out the problems on the pitch by bringing in top class players. To put it simply, I don’t care that iPads are banned from the stadium nor do I see how this has any benefit to the team, he cares more about protecting the brand that is Manchester United Football Club.

I touched on the sponsors that he’s bringing in, like Adidas becoming our new kit manufacture at the start of the 2015/2016 season. Per year we will receive £75,000,000 from Adidas, for ten years. That is all well and good, we are bringing in a staggering amount of money, but we all know that the money we will receive will not go back to the fans.

A few fans on Twitter have been saying that we should boycott the games and have a mass exodus at the ground for our cries to be noticed. I for one do not agree with that as I think that the 90 minutes should be exclusively for the team, the players need our support every week they do not deserve the fans to walk out on them because of the problems upstairs.

As ‘#GlazersOut’ was trending on Twitter, we know the club will have noticed, they will have noticed all the green and gold scarves in the stands every week too but ultimately will they really care about a Twitter campaign or a couple of scarves? We know the money generated does not go back to the fans so why should we let our money (excluding tickets sales) go to them in the first place? Go to the games, sing for the players but at half time do not buy a drink or a snack, before the game do not buy a programme. When the club check the match day revenue they will notice something is not quite right, they will notice our anger and it will affect them more than if we were to wear a green and gold scarf, and as we know the Glazers love to pocket our money, if they’re not getting enough of it, they should act upon it and thus, should give something back to us for a change.

Let’s hit them where it hurts.

United close in on third signing

Posted: 18 Aug 2014 11:12 PM PDT

marcos rojoManchester United are closing in on Sporting Lisbon defender Marcos Rojo, as Louis Van Gaal looks to have finally moved closer to clinch one of the signings he so desperately wants.

The Argentine defender emerged as a surprise target for United last week, after the club missed out on Thomas Vermaelen, who left Arsenal to join Barcelona, and were told to forget about signing Mats Hummels, who will remain at Borussia Dortmund for another season at least.

Van Gaal is said to be particularly upset about the defensive frailties United showed against Swansea on Saturday and has stepped up his interest for Rojo, who was named in the team of the tournament at the World Cup earlier this summer, and who would cost United around £16m.

The Argentine, who can play either as centre-back or left-back, issued an apology to his club and the fans after he refused to train in what seemed a blatant attempt to engineer a move away from Sporting.

"I was hot-headed and I'm sorry," said Rojo, who resumed training yesterday.

"Sporting signed me when I was not at my best and gave me the opportunity to play for a big club in Europe. I would like to thank the trust they had in me and resume training."

The best part of the deal as far as United are concerned, however, is that, according to the Mirror, the club are planning to include Nani in the package they’ll offer to Sporting Lisbon, meaning United could at long last getting rid of the Portuguese.

In his seven seasons at Old Trafford Nani has only shown flashes of his talent but his career has been in almost constant decline since the 2010-11 season and despite signing a new five-year deal last summer, he clearly doesn’t feature in Van Gaal’s plans and one feels the United manager brought him on on Saturday simply due to the lack of alternatives.

United desperately need a centre-back and Nani has been surplus to requirements for some time. For once, United could be winning on both fronts.

Pressure is growing, will Woodward deliver?

Louis-van-Gaal-Manchester-UnitedWith Twitter becoming even more popular in the world of social media, it seems that everything in football – from transfer rumours to angry hashtags – starts and ends with a tweet.

With United's lacklustre performance against Swansea coming after a lack of transfer signals from inside United, fans went into a impulsive, yet fully justified attack on the club's hierarchy.

Realistically, thousands of fans putting #GlazersOut within their tweets isn't going to change much, but it does signal that the fans remain crestfallen with the club that so many love.

Being downbeat is an odd feeling for any Red, so when one fan feels the need to tweet their disdain, it often spreads like wildfire, as fans don't know what to do other than to share their aversion for the current state of affairs. For most United fans, Twitter was an angry place to be in last night and it was a surprise. Anger, disappointment and disdain aren't words that are often associated with a club the size of Manchester United.

It is very important, in circumstances such as these, not to lose sight of what's at stake and, quite often, some of the best times in the club's history have directly followed considerable low points.

Quite simply, Manchester United are a too bigger club to just fall back in to mediocrity.

From the outside, yes, it looks as though Edward Woodward is hopelessly out of his depth but fans don't know enough about what goes on inside the club to fully condone the signing of a petition that would see Woodward removed from his role.

Some of the quotes that have emerged from his interviews have been questionable at best, but it'd be wise to wait until the next two weeks are over before passing resolute judgment.

Who knows, we could be in 'two weeks to save your job, Ed' territory, and in absolute panic, he could pull of a major coup.

Let's look at the bigger picture for a minute: We are the most successful team in English football with the largest fan-base in the world. We have a good crop of young players in the country coming through the ranks and, in Louis Van Gaal, we have one of the world's best coaches. Furthermore, the Dutchman is likely to have made serious demands before joining the club and the fall-out if those promises were to be broken is scarcely imaginable, given Van Gaal's stature and calibre.

Whilst we may have lost our first game of the new era, and have a vice-president who seems constantly bewildered by what goes on around him, it's unthinkable that United will be allowed to further plunge into decline.

Justifiable optimism or sheer lunacy? The next two weeks will give us the answer.

United’s final transfer solution

Old Trafford Fire Sale

Old Trafford Fire Sale

We as a species thrive on the need to experiment. Where would we be without experiments that led to advances in medicine, engineering and space travel? The experiment at United, however, needs to end. After years of bringing world class, quality footballers to Old Trafford, the club has decided to spend some time bringing in uninspiring, mediocre athletes.

After the display against Swansea on Saturday, enough is enough. Before there are any new arrivals, these players have to go.

This is not an effort to spark a debate about the Glazers, for it's not worth the time and I am not well connected enough at the club to know what really goes on behind closed doors, but the fact of the matter is the standard of player through the doors at Carrington has dropped massively since their takeover in 2005.

The reason for this is unclear, but it is to be certain that many readers will speculate. Louis Van Gaal needs to take a look at the average members of his squad, kindly ask them to leave and politely fill their pockets with cement and drop them off the docks.

There have been several genuine, world-class additions to the squad; Juan Mata and Robin van Persie are obvious examples, but they are a minority in a dismal cast of players.

Still nobody knows why United signed Marouane Fellaini, many aren't sure even he knows why. The sounds of disgust that echoed around the ground during his introduction for Ander Herrera late in the second half are still ringing in my ears. It was then when many realised he is United's Andy Carrol. Fellaini is a long ball target man, who runs around a lot, offers very little and thanks to the lunacy of David Moyes cost far too much.

It would be easy to ramble on about how Tom Cleverly is the Rick Ross of football, absolutely talentless but, by some miracle, very successful. But the thing is, it genuinely feels like Tom cares about this club and that despite his flaws he plays for the shirt. The same cannot be said for Nani and Chicharito.

Both of these players are desperate to move somewhere else. Hernandez was adored when he burst onto the scene and fans will always be grateful for the dramatic winners he's scored for the club, but the player who took to the field against Swansea was a shadow of that man.

During the match he spent the majority of the time walking around like a sulking child, throwing tantrums when he didn't get the ball and squandering simple opportunities when he did. Many have loved his time here, but he needs to leave before things get ugly.

Nani, like Anderson, like Bebé, like Darren Gibson is one that had so much potential to fulfil but never did. United fans have seen this potential in flashes, but now it's almost cringe-worthy when he gets the ball. Previously the most common observation of Nani was that he was frustrating because of his inconsistency, sometimes brilliant, sometimes idiotic. Now he is consistent. The results of this consistency are truly devastating.

One summer United's midfield included, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Roy Keane. That same summer the club spent £28m and acquired the services of Juan Sebastian Veron, then of the world’s best midfielders. Things did not work out for the Argentine and he was quickly discarded after two seasons, for back then United knew who to buy and also when to sell.

It's unclear why those in charge of United embarked on this challenge of trying to get average footballers more medals than Steven Gerrard, but although in the past it has been a barrel of laughs, it is time to put that to bed. Now is the time to invest in quality and ditch the quantity.

Alternatively show some integrity and sign Titus Bramble, Ji Dong-Wong, singer Mick Hucknall and throw in Duke from Tracy Beaker. Fully commit to an average transfer policy. It could be similar to Athletic Bilbao and their rule on only signing players from the Basque region of Spain. Cliff Richard might be looking for some work soon as well.
