Another £30m defender on United’s radar Posted: 14 Aug 2014 02:22 AM PDT
ESPN claims that sources within the club are adamant the United manager is determined to bring in two players between Benatia, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo before the end of the transfer window, as Van Gaal currently has only three centre-backs at his disposal and the injury to Luke Shaw complicates things even further.

Here’s the code – 1727071-391809 Benatia, who’s also attracted strong interest from Manchester City and Chelsea and a host of other European clubs, could cost United in the region of £30m, though Roma are unlikely to be willing to part way with one of their best players, particularly after a transfer window during which the club from the Eternal City has strengthened its squad in a bid to break Juventus’ stranglehold on Serie A. The Moroccan defender was rock-solid for the Giallorossi last season, as Roma conceded a mere 25 goals in 38 games, the league’s second-best after Juventus’ – the eventual champions conceded 23 – and Benatia proved to be a threat at the other end of the pitch too, scoring five goals in 33 appearances. Strong in the air and physically imposing, Benatia is the prototype of the modern defender, as his size doesn’t hinder his pace and movement and he’s also an excellent reader of the game. With Van Gaal growing frustrated at the lack of transfers, particularly after seeing Vermaelen – thought to be one of the Dutchman’s main targets – moving to Barcelona and with Borussia Dortmund adamant that Hummels will remain at the Westfalenstadion this summer, Benatia would represent an excellent signing for United. The situation surrounding Rojo is slightly more complicated, as the Argentine defender has apparently been told by Sporting Lisbon that he’ll be demoted to the reserve team if he refuses to train in order to push through a move to another club. While Sporting’s decision might complicated things for United, it’s also perfectly understandable. According to ESPN, Van Gaal had hoped to have the majority of business done by Friday, but he’s becoming increasingly annoyed with Ed Woodward and the lack of results the last two months have produced. |
Striker on his way out while bookies suspend betting Posted: 13 Aug 2014 11:25 PM PDT
Welbeck, who came through the ranks of United’s Academy, divides opinion amongst United fans and is reportedly interested in the switch if his chances are like likely to be limited this season as he plays second fiddle tomWayne Rooney and Robin van Persie.
Have you joined our Fantasy Football League yet? Here’s the code – 1727071-391809 With Shane Long moving to Southampton, Bruce sees Welbeck as the perfect replacement. If Bruce gets his man, Welbeck would become Hull City’s most expensive signing and provide Danny with something United can’t offer him, European football. Meanwhile, in the ‘will he, won’t he, are we even interested in him’ transfer saga of the summer, Juventus’ Arturo Vidal is considered as a done-deal according to bookmakers as they suspend bets on him signing for the club before the window closes. Reports are beginning to suggest Javier Hernandez or Nani could be part of a deal to bring the Chilean midfielder to Old Trafford. RedRants’ Opinion? Welbeck is a far better player than many United fans give him credit for but he always seems to lack ‘something’ even to those of us who do rate him. Most fans who don’t rate him would simply point to his goal tally to highlight what that something is. With James Wilson so obviously destined to force his way into the first team over the next 12months, United could afford to lose at least one of Hernandez or Welbeck without leaving themselves short and with the qualifying campaign for the 2016 European Championship’s just around the corner,va move to Hull offers Welbeck the best opportunity to figure in Hodgson’s plans. As for Vidal, I think he’s the best player we could possibly sign OTHER than a top centre half, but can Ed actually seal the deal? Only time will tell eh? |
