Hernandez should cut United ties - Herrera

Posted: 11 Aug 2014 05:45 PM PDT

With reports suggesting United manager Louis van Gaal has told the 26-year-old his services are no longer required at Old Trafford, national boss Herrera has claimed Hernandez would be better off elsewhere regardless. The 66-time Mexico international made four substitute appearances for his country at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, scoring once. Herrera insisted Hernandez has something to offer a club in Europe now he is seemingly surplus to requirements at United after joining the club in 2010. Hernandez has been linked with three-time reigning Serie A champions Juventus - a switch Herrera would approve of. I think [Hernandez] needs to leave, Herrera told ESPN FC, via a translator. I think [Juventus] would be a good option for him. When a coach doesnt want you, when you have your best experience, your best moment with them, and now the coach that wanted you is no longer there - its time to move. I think there are a lot of opportunities. They are not bad opportunities. If he goes to Juventus that would be an extraordinary team. Without a doubt, it would be a nice change for him. Hopefully hell see more minutes. Hernandez has also been linked with Premier League outfits Southampton and Tottenham, along with Spanish champions Atletico Madrid and Serie A side Inter.

Klopp: Hummels is going nowhere

Posted: 11 Aug 2014 04:33 PM PDT

Hummels has been extensively linked with a move to Manchester United throughout the close-season but a day after the central defender was confirmed as Dortmunds new captain, Klopp again argued he will not let the 25-year-old leave the Westfalenstadion. Speaking ahead of the DFB Supercup against Bayern Munich, Klopp said: He (Hummels) is going nowhere. He is staying with us. Hummels has a contract with Dortmund until June 2017. Since Klopp took over at Dortmund before the 2008-09 Bundesliga season, Hummels has become the rock at the centre of the 47-year-old coachs defence. Hummels played just 12 Bundesliga games in Klopps first campaign at the Westfalenstadion as Dortmund finished sixth up from 13th in 2007-08 but in 2009-10 the Bergisch Gladbach-born defender made 30 league appearances as the North Rhine-Westphalia-based club claimed fifth. The Germany international played over 30 games in Dortmunds two Bundesliga-winning seasons before 28 in 2012-13 and 23 last season due to a couple of injury problems. Hummels was also critical to Germanys FIFA World Cup triumph during the close-season. Dortmund will aim to defend their Supercup title on Wednesday against Bayern but Klopp explained the result would not necessarily mean much as the arch-rivals prepare to challenge for Bundesliga honours again this season. A victory against Bayern Munich would cause a great feeling, but it has no consequences for the upcoming season, he said. Last year we won the game but finished some [19] points behind Bayern.

Dinamo Zagreb secure Henriquez loan

Posted: 11 Aug 2014 10:33 AM PDT

The Chilean, who has three caps for his country, signed for United from Universidad in his homeland two years ago. He failed to make an impact at Old Trafford, however, and is yet to make an appearance for the first team. After a brief loan spell to Wigan Athletic during the 2012-13 season, the 20-year-old spent last termin Spain withSegunda Division outfit Real Zaragoza, scoring six times in 25 appearances. Currently leading the Croatian top flight with a perfect record after four matches, Zagreb face Petrolul Ploiesti in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League play-off clash a week on Wednesday. And Henriquezis thrilled at the prospect of helping his new side reach the first round proper. Im happy with my arrival at Dinamo and I want to do good things, he told the clubs official website. I have a lot of motivation and I want to prove myself, and I believe that Dinamo is a great club for it. I want to help the club enter the group stages of the Europa League, and then make the right result.

Premier League: Top 10 transfers of 2014 so far

Posted: 11 Aug 2014 08:58 AM PDT

Alexis Sanchez - Arsenal Thesecond-largest transfer in Arsenal's history, with anestimated £32 million fee,Arsene Wenger pulled off a major coup in bringing the Chilestar to the Emirates Stadium from Barcelona. Deemed surplus to requirements atCamp Nou ahead of Luis Suarez's arrival,Alexisturned down Liverpool to join Arsenal. He was a key player in his country's run to the last 16 of the World Cup, and Arsenal fans will be hoping the fleet-of-foot forward can help fire them to a first Premier League title since 2004. DiegoCosta - Chelsea After hishaul of 36 goals in all competitions helped Atletico Madrid to the Spanish title and the UEFA Champions League final, Chelsea decided to splash over £30mon Costa. Jose Mourinho regularly bemoaned his striking options as Chelsea finished third in the Premier League last term, and he will hope Spain international Costa gives his team a goalscoring threat they lacked in 2013-14. And Costa certainly knows how to find the net, having scored more goals than Chelsea's three frontline strikers -Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto'o and Demba Ba - managed between them last season. Cesc Fabregas - Chelsea Anotherman Mourinho feels can take Chelsea to the next level, former Arsenal captain Fabregas has arrived at Stamford Bridge for a fee thought to be around £27m. After a frustrating three-year stint at boyhood club Barcelona - who he re-joined from Arsenal in 2011 - Fabregas, 27,is sure to be determined to once again take the Premier League by storm. Mourinho has earmarked Fabregas as the player to replace the huge influence of Chelsea legend Frank Lampard in his midfield. If he can do just that, as well as clicking with Costa, the Stamford Bridge club will not be far away from winning the league. Adam Lallana - Liverpool A graceful and skilful playmaker,Lallana was the driving force behind Southampton's superb Premier League season last term. Lallana'sform earned him a spot in England's World Cup squad, and a big-money move to Liverpool - where he will supplementthe likes of Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling as the Merseyside club look to go one better than their runners-up spot in 2013-14. Romelu Lukaku - Everton Lukaku was outstanding forEvertonlast season, with his 15 Premier League goals while on loan from Chelsea helping Roberto Martinez to a fifth-place finish in his maiden campaign in charge at Goodison Park. Indeed, Martinez was so impressed by the Belgium international, he decided to smash Everton'stransfer record to bring him to Merseyside permanently in a deal worth £28m. Qualification for the Champions League represents Everton's goal this season - and Lukaku is key to their chances of achieving that objective. Eliaquim Mangala - Manchester City City may have won the Premier League last season, but there were several occasions where they looked vulnerable at the back. And that is the reason manager Manuel Pellegrini has decided to spend a reported £42.9m to bring France international Mangala to the Etihad Stadium from Porto. A strong, domineering centre-back, the 23-year-old will be deployed alongside captain Vincent Kompany at the heart of City's backline. Dejan Lovren - Liverpool A porous defence represented Liverpool's undoing in their unlikely challenge for last season's title. Brendan Rodgers' men were lethal going forward - scoring 101 goals - but conceded 13 more than City, who eventually beat them to the crown by two points. Rodgers has been seeking a vocal defensive leader since the retirement of Jamie Carragher and, in Lovren, believes he has found his man. At a reported fee of £20m from Southampton, the Croatia international did not come cheap. But if Lovren can shore up Liverpool's backline sufficiently to go one better in the Premier League this season, he will be worth every penny. Ander Herrera -Manchester United United, then managed by David Moyes, tried to sign Herrera on transfer deadline day last year. That move failed, but, 12 months on,United have finally got their man by landing the deep-lying midfielder from Athletic Bilbao for a fee just shy of £30m. A typically Spanish midfielder - all touch, technique and passing ability -Herrera will likely slot into new boss Louis van Gaal's engine room alongside Michael Carrick when the England international returns from an ankle injury. Luke Shaw -Manchester United Another newcomer in the Van Gaal revolution at Old Trafford, United made Shaw the most expensive teenager in football when they paid Southampton around £30m for the full-back's services in June. The 19-year-old - like Lallana and Lovren - was a huge part of Southampton's success last term, and Van Gaal will hope he fills the void left by the departing Patrice Evra. Bojan Krkic - Stoke City Once considered to be a worthy contemporary of Lionel Messi after coming through Barcelona's renowned youth system, Bojan has lost his way somewhat in recent years. Unfulfilling loan spells at Milan, Roma and Ajax have come and gone, but the 23-year-old will hope to find a home at Stoke after completing arguably thetransfer window's most intriguing move so far last month. The diminutive forward hit the ground running in pre-season, scoring three goals in three appearances, and manager Mark Hughes will be hoping he translates that form into the Premier League.

Chelseas new additions pose threat to Man City

Posted: 11 Aug 2014 07:27 AM PDT

In Jose Mourinho's first spell in charge, Chelsea won back to back league titles in 2005 and 2006, but the Portuguese failed to repeat that trick on his return lastseasonas theyended the campaign in third place, four points shy of champions City. Mourinho spent much of the campaignbemoaning his lack of quality striking options, and Chelsea were quick to address that during the current transfer window. In securing theservices of Diego Costa, Mourinho has added a forward who netted 36 goals in all competitions for Atletico Madrid last term, while he has also conducted what appears to be a shrewd piece of business by bringing Didier Drogba back to the club. In Costa, Chelsea will feel they have the man to fire them to glory, while the acquisition ofCesc Fabregas from Barcelonashould offsetthe loss of Frank Lampard's goalscoring and creative threat from midfield. It remains to be seen how Manchester United will fare under the stewardship of a second new manager in as many seasons. Following the dominance of the Alex Ferguson era, David Moyes' appointment proved a huge disappointment to all at Old Trafford, with the Scot failing to see out theseason as United finished seventh -their lowest ever Premier League placing. Louis van Gaal, fresh from guiding the Netherlands to third place at the World Cup, has impressed in pre-season, winning theInternational Champions Cup with victoriesover the likes ofRoma, Inter, Real Madrid and Liverpool. However, in working with much the same squad as Moyes, Van Gaal will have to show all of his managerial mastery if he is to bridge the 22-point gap that separated them andneighbours City last season. City, meanwhile, boast arguably the strongest squad in the division, with Manuel Pellegrini enjoying a plethora of attacking talent at his disposal. Pellegrini's team held their nerve in the final weeks of last season, winning their last five matches to overtake Liverpool and claim their second crown in threeyears, two points ahead of the men from Anfield. If they are to challenge as closely this time around, Liverpool must learn to cope without the inspirational Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan has departedfor Barcelona after ascintillating 2013-14, in which he scored 31 Premier League goals and struck up a lethal partnership with Daniel Sturridge. A 2-0 defeat to Chelsea and a 3-3 draw at Crystal Palace -having led 3-0 -cost Liverpool dearly last season, and another club likely to be wistfully asking 'what if'are Arsenal, who topped the table for long periods of the campaignonly to fall away in what has become a seemingly customary spring-time implosion. Arsenal fans will have at least been appeased by the FA Cup triumph over Hull City in May, while the capture of Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona suggests Arsene Wenger's club-record signing of Mesut Ozil last year was not a one-off from a manager who is famed for his prudence in the transfer market. Everton, who just missed out on UEFA Champions League qualification last term by finishing fifth, have smashed their transfer record for Romelu Lukaku and will hope to go one better this time around, while Mauricio Pochettino has swapped Southampton for Tottenham. The three promoted sides see two new faces to Premier League management -and one very familiar one. Nigel Pearson's Leicester City were comfortable Championship winners in 2013-14, while Sean Dyche's Burnley surprised many by finishing runners-up despite having oneof the smallest squads in the division. QPR, under the wily leadership of Harry Redknapp, were able to bounce back at the first available opportunity via the play-offs, while the likes of Alan Irvine at WestBrom will also take to top-flight management for the first time. Meanwhile, another new face will be seen at Southampton as Ronald Koeman attempts to perform well with a squad shorn of the likes of Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Luke Shaw and Dejan Lovren.

Van Gaal undaunted by weight of history

Posted: 11 Aug 2014 07:04 AM PDT

His first words told their own story: "This club has big ambitions; I too have big ambitions. Together I'm sure we will make history." It was a bold declaration, one that was a welcome move away from the usual 'media speak' that accompanies such statements. Most striking, though, was how greatly Van Gaal's words differed from those often uttered by the beleaguered - some would say hapless - man he replaced. Indeed, when David Moyes first spoke to the press upon his introduction, he had this to say: "I'm inexperienced in a lot of things and there were some brilliant managers who could have quite easily taken this role but the biggest confidence I got was that Sir Alex Ferguson said to me 'you're the next Manchester United manager'. "I hope we play the same way, with the same traditions and entertaining, exciting football." While 'hope' was not in the vocabulary of Ferguson, Moyes was forgiven; he was new after all. Yet those comments proved the first of many missteps. From the repeated suggestions United were 'trying to improve', to the claim that Liverpool were favourites ahead of their Premier League meeting at Old Trafford. Anointed 'The Chosen One' upon his arrival, it quickly became apparent Moyes was not 'The Right One' as United's season crumbled to new lows on a weekly basis. In fact, as weeks turned to months and fans increasingly began to gaze at Chelsea's Jose Mourinho with longing eyes, that infamous banner may as well have read 'Not The Special One'. Banners aside, United clearly realised Moyes did not have the character for such a job. He was someone who openly admitted to being nervous about going to Ferguson's house in jeans on the day he was told the top job would be his. By contrast, Pep Guardiola reportedly told the Barcelona hierarchy they "did not have the balls" to appoint him back in 2008. In that case, it turned out they did, his recruitment heralding the richest period of success in the club's history. But Moyes was no Guardiola, no Mourinho, no Ferguson. Andhe was no Van Gaal. Indeed, in the new man, United have almost appointed the anti-Moyes. A 63-year-old who has seemingly never experienced self-doubt, he once famously claimed "Louis van Gaal has nothing more to learn". And who can blame him? While Moyes had done an admirable job at Everton, albeit one that is diminished by the day as Roberto Martinez improves upon his work, Van Gaal has an almost unrivalled CV. Having managed Ajax's young guns to an unlikely European Cup win in the early nineties, he has won titles at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and, remarkably, AZ Alkmaar. His efforts at the recentWorld Cup, when taking an unheralded Netherlands squad to a third-placed finish, suggest that Van Gaal remains at the top of his game too. Whether or not he fulfils the promise of making history remains to be seen. However, unlike Moyes, he walks through the door with complete confidence in his ability to do so.

Blind refuses to rule out Man United switch

Posted: 11 Aug 2014 04:05 AM PDT

United manager Van Gaal is reportedly keen to bolster his defensive options after employing a 3-5-2 system during pre-season. The experiencedDutchmanwas reportedly interested in signing Thomas Vermaelen from Arsenal, but the Belgium international opted to join Barcelona. Blind is another player to have been linked with Unitedthroughout the close-season and speculation has mounted that he could once more play under the stewardship of Van Gaal, who was previouslyhis head coach for theNetherlands. The 24-year-old insists he is happy to remain in Amsterdam, but confirmed he would weigh up his options should an offer be made for his services. "I am happy here in Amsterdam,"Blind toldSky Sports. "But if there comes another club I will have to think about it and then we will see. "For now I will focus on Ajax and we will see what happens next week." Ajax head coach Frank de Boer believes Blind will eventually move on, but has urged him to spend one more season with the Eredivisie champions. "I am convinced he will make the right choice,"De Boer commented. "If he goes to a big club then he has definitely deserved it. "But I think it would be better if he stays one year. Last year was a good year for him but I think he can improve a lot with us."

Schmeichel: Man United are title contenders

Posted: 10 Aug 2014 09:23 PM PDT

It was a season to forget for United in 2013-14 after finishing seventh in David Moyes' only campaign at Old Trafford. Moyes was the casualty of United's failure, sacked in favour of experienced manager Van Gaal. Van Gaal has already overseen a change in formation, with the Dutchman opting for a three-man defence, a system he adopted during the Netherlands' World Cup campaign in Brazil. He also guided the club to an unbeaten tour of the United States, with wins against the Los Angeles Galaxy, Roma, Inter, Real Madrid and Liverpool. And Van Gaal's bold tactics - highlighted by his decision to swap goalkeepers in the Netherlands' penalty shootout win against Costa Rica - bodes well for United. "He did one or two things in the World Cup which were quite noticeable and have put his name right up there," Schmeichel told The Mirror. "They were things no-one else ever dared to do. "So he looks to be his own man, who knows exactly what he wants to do. I think we should be contending for the title again this season under him. "He has always been someone who is at a big club like Bayern Munich and Barcelona and done good things. Hopefully he can do the same at Manchester United." If United are to return to the lofty heights of the Premier League table, they must improve their home form. United uncharacteristically lost 12 league games last season, with seven of those coming at Old Trafford, slipping up against West Brom, Everton, Newcastle United, Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester City and Sunderland. "It wasn't great losing that many games – especially at Old Trafford," the Dane said. "If you turn those seven defeats into wins - which we would normally do - then you see we would have been right up there in the table. "There was a problem at Old Trafford last season. It would be nice for that to go away and to see the team winning again - and hopefully in style."

Vermaelen: Barcelona was an easy choice

Posted: 10 Aug 2014 04:57 AM PDT

The Belgium international centre-back completed his switch to the Liga giants from Arsenal on Sunday, with Barcelona confirming a €10 million feewas paid with up to €5 million due depending on his own personal performances, whilea possible €3.8 million could be due from Barca's achievements. Vermaelen had been heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford throughout the close-season, with new United managerLouis van Gaal reportedly keen to bolster his defensive options. However, the 28-year-old revealed there was only one option once he heard of Barca's interest. "Coming to Barca is a dream come true," he said at a press conference. "It wasn't a difficult decision at all. "I'm very happy to be here, for a lot of players it's a dream to play for this big club. It's always a big challenge but I look forward to it. "I will be playing with the best players in the world, training with them every day and I hope to get better as a player. "You know when you come to a club like this they have world-class defenders. There's competition, I'm excited, it's down to me to show I can play for this club." Vermaelen joined Arsenal in June 2009 and had been club captain at the Emirates Stadium. However, he suffered problems with form and injuries and lost his position to regular centre-back pairing Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny last term. Vermaelen was quizzed on his previous injury issues, but the former Ajax man is confident his fitness concerns are a thing of the past. "Last year was a bit disappointing with injuries," he added. "It happens sometimes in a career with a player. I hope to come here and hope that I can be strong here and play all the games. "I'm confident with the medical team here I can be fit and play a lot of games."
