Samir Nasri ready to make the best moves for himself and Manchester City Posted: 09 Aug 2014 02:30 PM PDT A hostile reception at todays Community Shield with Arsenal will not concern the player who has always put his own career first Samir Nasri bridles at the less than flattering description of Sundays Community Shield. It is not a glorified friendly, he rebuts with a shake of the head. Against Arsenal and the supporters who guarantee a hostile reception for the clubs former midfielder at Wembley, how could it be? They see it as treason or that I betrayed them, says Nasri of his £24m switch to Manchester City in 2011. Its not like that. I just look at what is best for me. That perspective explains why the Frenchmans international career is over at the age of 27. Nasri is attending a free coaching school organised by City in the Community when he confirms his retirement from France after 41 caps. The juxtaposition is striking. Behind the now former international are dozens of schoolchildren eager to impress and dreaming of a career like that of the two-time Premier League champion. The only disillusionment in the air emanates from the coaching schools special guest himself having evaluated his international future this summer and decided it was no longer best for him. Ian Holloway condemns Millwall fans over obscene Jimmy Savile chants Posted: 09 Aug 2014 12:03 PM PDT Songs taunted Leeds supporters over citys links to Savile Holloway: Its obscene it brings football into disrepute Ian Holloway has condemned disrespectful Millwall supporters for goading Leeds United fans about their citys links to Jimmy Savile. Holloway, whose side won the game at The Den 2-0 with goals from Mark Beevers and Shaun Williams, said the behaviour had undermined what was an impressive performance Millwalls first opening-day victory since 2010. Why Premier League new boys Burnley, Leicester and QPR need not be afraid Posted: 09 Aug 2014 12:00 PM PDT Promoted trio all have recent top-flight experience and can continue trend of surviving beyond their first season It always used to be so easy to predict. The three clubs promoted to the Premier League would ruffle a few gilded feathers before ultimately returning from whence they came 10 months later, promising to be back soon. Yet in the landscape of ever-more lucrative television rights and parachute payments, those days now seem in the dim and distant past. Not since the 200708 season when Birmingham City and Derby County the latter with a record-breaking low of 11 points and a solitary victory went straight back down has more than one promoted club failed to survive in their debut season. Four of the last 15 teams to try their luck in the Premier League duck hunt have ended up back in the Championship as the yo-yo phenomenon of the 1990s and 2000s has largely been consigned to history. Ipswich Town hold out against Fulham fightback to make winning start Posted: 09 Aug 2014 11:37 AM PDT Welcome back, Fulham, and yes, the Championship is harder than you might have remembered. This is an unforgiving league, one that punishes even the smallest of weaknesses, and Fulham had plenty of those on display here. While it is far too early to make definitive judgements about any side, Felix Magath should definitely be worried by Fulhams lack of quality and their failure to match Ipswich for commitment and endeavour. It was Fulhams first match outside the Premier League in 13 years and while Magath could argue that they are a work in progress, they need to find their feet quickly, or else opponents will take as much delight in playing them as Mick McCarthys side did. The one consolation for Magath was the way his team roused themselves after Tim Hooglands late deflected strike set up a frantic finale, but Ipswich clung on for an impressive victory. Scottish roundup: Lee Erwin gives Motherwell a winning start Posted: 09 Aug 2014 11:11 AM PDT Motherwell beat 10-man St Mirren 1-0 Inverness suppress newly promoted Hamilton 2-0 Motherwell made a winning start to their 2014-15 Scottish Premiership campaign with a goal from Lee Erwin enough to beat 10-man St Mirren 1-0 at Fir Park. Last seasons runners-up were off the mark in the 64th minute as Erwin scored his first goal for the club by following up a parried Lionel Ainsworth shot, and their opponents misery was compounded when player-coach Jim Goodwin was sent off nine minutes later. Barcelona sign Thomas Vermaelen from Arsenal on five-year deal Posted: 09 Aug 2014 10:55 AM PDT Belgium defender leaves Gunners for fee understood to be £15m Arsenal wish Vermaelen well after five years in north London Barcelona have moved to strengthen their defence by agreeing to sign the Belgium centre-back Thomas Vermaelen from Arsenal on a five-year contract. Barça did not publish any financial details on their website but the fee is understood to be in the region of £15m. The 28-year-old defender joined Arsenal in 2009 after a nine-year stint at Ajax and quickly became a fans favourite while also being promoted to club captain. Vermaelens career has been hampered by injury and he made only 21 appearances in the 2013-14 season after falling behind Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker in the pecking order. Shaun Williams confirms Millwalls opening-day defeat of Leeds United Posted: 09 Aug 2014 09:38 AM PDT Mark Beevers struck inside the opening 10 minutes to set Millwall on their way to their first opening-day win since 2010. He got them off to a flyer after a neat short corner routine and Shaun Williams made sure of the result from the penalty spot two minutes from time. In the opening stages neither side looked likely to score as they started restlessly, both struggling to gain possession and cautiously testing one another. Continue reading...![]() |
Nottingham Forests first-half goals see off makeshift Blackpool Posted: 09 Aug 2014 09:21 AM PDT Yeah, but as empty experiences go, said Woody Allen in the film Love and Death to Diane Keaton when she told him sex without love was an empty experience, its one of the best. There was something of a similar feeling here when the final whistle blew. Blackpool arrived as a club in total chaos, with 27 players leaving over the summer and 12 arriving in the past 12 days, but it clearly still felt mighty good to start Stuart Pearces reign as manager with a win. Even if the second half was an anti-climax. Continue reading...![]() |

Middlesbroughs Kike makes perfect start to overcome Birmingham City Posted: 09 Aug 2014 09:17 AM PDT The sunshine was almost Iberian and, long before the end, Middlesbrough fans had turned the afternoon into a fiesta. Olé, Olé, Kike, Kike, they sang in homage to their new Spanish striker, whose debut goal sealed a stylish win against an admittedly somewhat dishevelled Birmingham City. It was a good performance, very good, said Aitor Karanka, Boros manager, as he embarked on his first full season on Teesside. Kike is a main player but we looked like a proper team. Sheffield Wednesday condemn Brightons Sami Hyypia to a losing start Posted: 09 Aug 2014 09:04 AM PDT The Sami Hyypia era at Brighton began with crushing disappointment. The former Liverpool defender saw his new side defeated thanks to a spectacular goal just before the break by Giles Coke. Hyypias two predecessors at the Amex Stadium, Óscar García and Gus Poyet, have taken their sides to the play-offs but, on this early evidence, Brighton may be hard pressed to mount a third consecutive promotion challenge next spring. Brightons chances of rescuing a point were not helped by having to play the last 40 minutes with 10 men after the sending-off of Andrew Crofts for a high tackle on Sam Hutchinson. They had chances in the second half, the best falling to the debutant Chris OGrady, whose close-range shot was tipped around the post by Keiren Westwood, but Wednesday were worthy winners. The goal that won the game may not be bettered in the Championship this season and it sent the massed ranks of travelling supporters behind the goal at the other end into ecstasy.
