Van Gaal: Formation gives United flexibility

Van Gaal: Formation gives United flexibility

Posted: 28 Jul 2014 05:51 PM PDT

Van Gaal made the ideal start to his tenure in charge of United, leading them to a 7-0 friendly win over the Los Angeles Galaxy before a 3-2 triumph over Roma to kick-start their International Champions Cup campaign. And ahead of their second match of the pre-season tournamentagainst Inter in Maryland on Tuesday, Van Gaal said his formation was deployed to exploit the flexibility of his squad. The likes of Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Javier Hernandez, Danny Welbeck and Juan Mata are all at Van Gaals disposal, and caused the 62-year-old to deploy the formation. Thats why I chose this system, I can play them all. But Hernandez can also play in the strikers position, so can Welbeck, the Dutch tactician said. Rooney can play at number 10 and number nine and he tells me he can also play at number 11 and number seven, but I prefer him at number nine or number 10. When you look at the quality of your players you see Rooney, Van Persie, Hernandez, Mata, Welbeck, [Marouane] Fellaini, [Ander] Herrera a lot of players can play this system. So with this system, two strikers can play, the number 10 can play, two midfielders can play, so the specialists become the wing-backs. Van Gaal also revealed his reasons for accepting the United job, after being the number one candidate following David Moyes disastrous tenure at Old Trafford. It was not an instant yes because I had other offers also. So I had to think about it, he said. But I chose yes because of the big challenge. I have been at Ajax the biggest club in the Netherlands I went to Barcelona the biggest club in Spain and then I go to Bayern Munich, also the number one in Germany. So when Manchester United came I thought I had to say yes.

Posted: 28 Jul 2014 06:32 AM PDT

The veteran centre-back brought an end to his trophy-laden12-year stay at Old Trafford when his contract expired last season. Subsequently, Ferdinand was reunited with QPR manager Harry Redknapp, who he worked under at his first club West Ham. The 35-year-old is thrilled to be staying in the Premier League, but admitted that the deal may not have happened if Giggs had been named permanent manager at United instead of Louis van Gaal. "Giggsy is one of my mates, Iplayed with him for years," Ferdinand said."We had that chat when he got the job, he had to look at it as if he would still be there andhe did tell me Iwould have stayed and been a part of his plans. "But things change quickly, the new manager came in and wanted a new direction.Idusted myself down and moved on. "Isaid at the time that Man United would haveto tell me they didn't want me for me to leave the club. That's what happened they said 'thank you and goodbye'. "It has to be that way. The club is bigger than any player. I'm here now and I'm glad that Harry and [QPR chairman] Tony Fernandesgave me the chance to come here." Ferdinand also confirmed he had other offers but the lure of moving back to London helped twist his arm. He added: "Iplay to win whether that'sa match or in training. We have toput points on the board. That's whatwe did at Man United that's what we'lldo here. Asuccessful season is staying in the Premier League. "There were teams in the Premier Leagueand teams abroadbut when Harry gave me the call and the chance to return to London [I could not turn it down]."

Desperate for football? Who you gonna call? Er, Jim White...

Posted: 28 Jul 2014 01:00 AM PDT

Bored of the World Cup-Premier League interlull already? Don't worry, you're not alone. It's only been… *counts*… 15 days since that big tournament in Brazil finished, but that means there's still another… *counts*… 19 until the new Premier League season kicks off on August 16. Sigh. But that's where Sky Sports' GoalLine comes in, helpfully brought to you by deadline-day caffeine hoarder Jim White. "It's just a laugh to be honest," the Scot tells FFT. "It's a helpline for fans desperate for a football fix in between the end of the World Cup and the start of the new season. "They just have to tell us which Premier League club they support, and they can hear key moments from last season. The great news for them is that they hear from me first before they get put through, so that's an added bonus." Manchester United fans better not dial then, eh Jim? "We may have had to do a wee bit extra work in that area to find some memorable moments, but there were a few right?," White muses, before adding there should be better days ahead for the Old Trafford side. "It could be a phenomenal season with Louis van Gaal in charge. I met him some years ago in Amsterdam, and he's every bit as awesome as you think he might be. When he talks you listen." Call the Sky Sports GoalLine on 0333 202 2177, a helpline for fans desperate for a football fix ahead of the new season. Find more of the games that matter next season on Sky Sports.

Mata backs Herrera to star in Premier League

Posted: 28 Jul 2014 12:44 AM PDT

Herrera almost joined United ahead of the 2012-13 campaign but the deal collapsed and he eventually moved to Old Trafford from Athletic Bilbao on a four-year deal last month. The 24-year-old put in an impressive showing in a 7-0 demolition of Los Angeles Galaxy in his first outing for the club, while he also started the 3-2 win over Roma on Saturday. And Mata - who joined United from Chelsea in January - believes his fellow Spaniard can put his stamp on England's top flight this season. "He is a very, very good midfielder,"Mata is quoted as saying by the British media. "He's a good guy, my friend, and we've known each other since we were 15. He's top quality, he can play quick, slow and dictate the rhythm of a game. "He can score as well. He's a very complete midfielder and can bring these qualities to the team.I enjoy playing with quality players like him and Wayne Rooney. We try to play the same way." Mata is also enjoying life under manager Louis van Gaal and believes the Dutchman's high expectations can only be good for United. He added: "He is very honest with the players, he says what he thinks and has a clear way of understanding football. "We feel the manager is a great manager who has brought a strong mentality. This club is made for a winning mentality and I think he has it. "He has had success in different countries. We are happy with him and the way he works. Everything is new but we are adapting well to his style of football. "He is right to be demanding. As a player you want a coach like this, always demanding more and to play better and try to win the games earlier or in a different way."

Groin injury ends Rafaels pre-season tour early

Posted: 27 Jul 2014 11:53 PM PDT

The Brazilian full-back, 24, suffered the injury in the lead-up to United's 3-2 win over Roma at the International Champions Cup (ICC) on Saturday. While the extent of the injury remains unknown, Rafael will head back to the UK,the Premier League giants confirmed on Monday. "Rafael has returned to Manchester to continue treatment on the groin injury sustained in training in Denver," a statement published on the club's official website read. "As he was unlikely to participate in the remaining tour games, returning to the Aon Training Complex affords the best overall option for his recovery in time to continue pre-season preparation when the team returns." United have scheduled matches against Inter and Real Madrid at the ICC before a clash against Valencia at Old Trafford on August 12. Louis van Gaal's men open their Premier League campaign at home to Swansea City four days later.
