Van Persie: Honour to captain this team

After a fantastic performance against Spain, scoring two goals, Robin van Persie was subbed off in Holland’s round of 16 game. Afterwards, Louis van Gaal confirmed it was a tactical decision, not forced through injury.

“This coach wants to win,” said Van Persie. “So he makes substitutions. It’s simple. We played three different formations, so it’s a big compliment to the players that they picked up on it so quickly.”

Van Persie has reiterated comments made by Van Gaal this week about the press in Holland, whilst always stating how proud he is to be captain of his country.

“Let me tell you, the Dutch media thought we would never survive the first round but we have an outstanding spirit and everyone feels we can win it, that it really is possible,” he continued. “To be the captain of this squad makes me incredibly proud. It’s a huge honour to be here, at this stage, wearing the armband, because we are a real team.”
