United to hijack £20m bid for midfielder?

Posted: 09 Jul 2014 04:14 AM PDT

perezManchester United are considering whether to hijack Valencia’s deal for Argentina midfielder Enzo Perez, with reports suggesting the Benfica man is again on United’s radar, which could scupper Valencia’s plans of securing the 28-year-old.

Perez, who replaced Angel Di Maria during Argentina’s 1-0 win in the quarter finals against Belgium, impressed for Benfica last season, as the Lisbon club clinched their 33rd league title and lost the Europa League final on penalties against Sevilla but, according to reports in the Portuguese press, he’s looking for a move away this summer, despite having recently penned a new four-year deal.

Valencia looked to have agreed a deal for the 28-year-old after having a £20m bid accepted by Benfica, but Portuguese newspaper O Jogo claims that the uncertainty surrounding the Spanish club’s future after a takeover bid by billionaire Peter Lim has seen the deal come to a halt.

United could benefit from the impasse, particularly as Perez has been scouted extensively by the Old Trafford scouts and with Louis Van Gaal seeking to bolster his options in midfield, the Argentine could emerge as a somewhat surprise target.

“There is the possibility of playing for Valencia, who are a great club, but right now I want to be fully focused on the Argentina national team and on the World Cup,” said Perez.

“I am very happy at Benfica, I signed the contract renewal before travelling to join the Argentina squad, which shows that I want to keep wearing this shirt.

“I am feeling very well at Benfica and I know the club will try to do the best for me. I’ll respect what they decide.”

A central midfielder by trade, Perez can also be deployed further up the pitch as attacking midfielder and has often been played as right winger for club and country and has made 92 appearances in all competitions over the last two seasons for Benfica, scoring nine times and assisting a further 14 goals.

It was Nike knowing you

Nike UnitedThe American company have supplied the Old Trafford club since 2002 when they replaced Umbro in a lucrative deal which has cost Nike around £24million a season.

Although some reports at the weekend suggested a new record-breaking deal was set to be concluded, Nike revealed on Tuesday that they had opted to walk away from negotiations, claiming United were demanding too much money.

A Nike statement read: “Manchester United is a great club with passionate fans. We are proud to have partnered with them for the last 12 years and will continue to sponsor the club until the end of the 2014/15 season.

“Any partnership with a club or federation has to be mutually beneficial and the terms that were on offer for a renewed contract did not represent good value for Nike’s shareholders.

“We look forward to a successful final season with the club.”

Some reports have suggested Adidas are now in pole position to step in and clinch a deal which could see the club earn £60million a year from 2015.

Nike’s original deal was worth £303million, with extra income from a profit share agreement from merchandise sold worldwide.

New 2014-15 Kit LaunchOn Monday, United unveiled their new home kit for the 2014-15 season – which will be the last designed by Nike and the first to bear the logo of new sponsor Chevrolet.

United announced they would be entering a seven-year agreement – worth a reported £53million per season – with the US car giant from this summer back in 2012.

Incoming manager Louis van Gaal will head to the United States after the World Cup to pick up the reins for the first time as United begin their overseas tour on July 18.

It’s been noticeable that many United fans have grown to dislike Nike’s recent offerings anyway and many will be happy to see United look for a new sportswear company to provide our kits. Who would you choose? Has to be Adidas, doesn’t it?

United to miss out on defender

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 08:15 AM PDT

joao-miranda-atletico-madridManchester United look set to miss out on Atletico Madrid defender Miranda, who’s expected to put an end to speculations linking with a move away from the Vicente Calderon and remain with the Spanish champions next season.

The 29-year-old centre-back had emerged as a potential replacement for Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, with some reports that emerged a few weeks ago going as far as suggesting that United had agreed to trigger the Brazilian’s release clause in order to secure the defender’s services.

Over the last couple of days, however, Spanish newspaper Marca claimed that Miranda will return to Atletico Madrid when Diego Simeone’s men are summoned up for pre-season and the Brazilian can expect a similar treatment to that enjoyed by fellow teammates Koke and Gabi, who have been handed a pay-rise and a new deal following their performances last season.

The Brazilian defender was a pivotal figure in Atletico Madrid’s title-winning campaign last season, as the Colchoneros clinched their first league title in 18 years and came within a whisker of beating Real Madrid in the Champions League final, just 12 months after defeating their neighbours in the Spanish Cup final – incidentally thanks to a goal from Miranda.

Barcelona were also reportedly interest in the 29-year-old but have now seemingly focused on Borussia Dortmund’s defender Mats Hummels, who’s been on United’s radar for some time.

Scholes: “Van Gaal has a bit of genius about him”

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 06:54 AM PDT

LGV_nowPaul Scholes has described new Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal as a man possessing “the Midas touch”, but admitted the Dutchman will have to perform at his best if he is to bring United back to the Premier League’s summit.

In his latest blog for bookmaker Paddy Power, Scholes pointed at Van Gaal’s influence in guiding a good, but by no means vintage, Holland team to the semifinal and claimed fans and players alike will be excited by the prospect of the former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern manager taking charge at Old Trafford.

“Manchester United fans (and myself) cannot wait for Louis van Gaal to get the job started at Old Trafford. I'm sure he's aware of the challenge ahead after United finished seventh last year in the Premier League,” Scholes wrote in his column.

“It's not a vintage Holland team he's managing and van Gaal has got them to the brink of a World Cup Final. He's going to have to perform a similar operation at United after a shocking season in 2013/2014.”

The former United midfielder went on to describe the Dutchman as a manager seemingly incapable of making mistakes under pressure, describing Van Gaal as a man “with a bit of genius” about him.

“Van Gaal seems to have the Midas touch, and with his coaching reputation and vast experience he can bring a lot to the club. He'll improve last year's performance by 20/25 per cent, I feel.

“As well as the new signings, Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera, (and hopefully more to come) he'll bring more out of the players who are already there. I'm actually really excited about next season.

“He substituted his captain, Robin van Persie, when Holland were 1-0 down to Mexico, and they came back to win. He seems to have a bit of genius about him, and hopefully can work this magic on United next year.”
