United defender heads for exit door Posted: 05 Jul 2014 02:40 AM PDT
The Frenchman has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford for over 12 months, first as David Moyes launched in what proved to be an ultimately fruitless pursuit of Everton’s left-back Leighton Baines and then when United had emerged as front runners in the race to sign England international Luke Shaw.
While United did indeed secure the services of the former Southampton man last week, Evra was thought to be willing to remain at the club after extending his contract for a further 12 months in May, but he now looks set to join the Serie A champions, where he’d reunite with Paul Pogba. Today’s Gazzetta dello Sport reports that one of Evra’s agent was in Rio de Janeiro yesterday, ahead of France’s quarter final against Germany, and the Frenchman looks to have found an agreement with United, on the basis of which he’ll have to pay €1m – £800,000 – to rescind his contract before completing his move to Juventus. While not entirely surprising, Evra’s departure could come as a blow to United, particularly given his popularity among fans and his importance in the dressing room, while the prospect of him mentoring Shaw in the 19-year-old’s first season at Old Trafford now looks extremely unlikely. Furthermore, Evra’s departure, coupled with Alex Buttner’s move to Dynamo Moscow late last month, would leave United with only one left-back in their squad meaning Louis Van Gaal will have to bring another defender in. |
Vidic: “United and Inter are very similar” Posted: 04 Jul 2014 08:16 AM PDT
"It is one of the biggest clubs in the world, it has won the Champions League and many domestic trophies," said Vidic, who left Old Trafford as a free agent at the end of last season after spending eight and half years at United since arriving from Spartak Moscow in January 2006.
"It is a new project of the club and new owner, I like the idea of joining inter and I am sure I made the right choice. I spoke to Dejan Stankovic, he was full of support for the club and people around it. “Hopefully, I will keep the Serbian tradition at the club. I also spoke to players I know who have played in Italy and they said it would be a good move for me." Last season, Inter Milan finished fifth in the league, 42 points behind champions Juventus, a rather dramatic turnaround in fortunes for a club that had won the Treble in the 2009-10 season under Jose Mourinho’s guide. The glory days might be long gone for the Nerazzurri, but Vidic insisted that moving to Serie A isn’t a step back and that he hopes for his career in Milan to be as successful as his spell at United. "I almost came to Italy 12 years ago, some people say this, but I don't think it is a step down, I think Italian football is suited to the way I play, and I am going to one of the biggest clubs in the world," said the former United captain. "A few clubs are in transition and some are not where they want to be, but they are moving forward. Italy is different to English football, but certainly won't be easy in Italy. I was shown the project at Inter and I am happy. They explained the ideas at the club and the way the club is moving, how the club works, and what they are trying to do. “It seemed very similar to the structure at Manchester United. Erick Thohir wants to build a project and isn't looking at just the next six months. The clubs I have been at before, such as Red Star Belgrade and Spartak Moscow, I have always been part of new projects. “And In my career I have always chosen clubs which are moving forward, and I hope to achieve at Inter what I achieved at United." |
United raise offer for Colombia international Posted: 04 Jul 2014 06:46 AM PDT
Leaving the trio aside for a second, however, the most interesting rumour that’s surrounded United in recent weeks is the one according to which Louis Van Gaal would be ready to shell out €50m – £40m – for Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado.
The Colombian has impressed has impressed for his country at the World Cup, as Los Cafeteros have advanced to the first World Cup quarter finals in their history and he’s attracted interest from a host of European clubs, including Barcelona and Bayern Munich. On Wednesday, Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport claimed United had tabled a €40m – £32m – offer for the 26-year-old, while yesterday La Nazione – Florence’s main newspaper – reported United had submitted a €25m – £20m – in May only to return with a €34m – £27m – bid for the Colombian, who would fit Van Gaal’s fast counter-attacking game to perfection. Today, however, German newspaper Bild claims that United have decided to blow their challengers out of the water with a €50m offer, a sum Fiorentina would surely have to accept, given it’d give them the opportunity to invest strongly on a couple of quality players in an attempt to clinch a Champions League spot this season – Fiorentina finished fourth last season, thus narrowly missed out on European football’s elite competition. Technically gifted, quick and extremely versatile – he’s deployed as right winger in Colombia’s 4-3-3 but he plays as right wing-back in Fiorentina’s 3-5-2 and has also filled in at right-back when asked to do so – Cuadrado has been one of the revelation of this World Cup so far, but a £40m bid seems a little excessive, particularly considering that Fiorentina were thought to be demanding half of the sum when Barcelona first made an enquiry. Furthermore, while Cuadrado would undoubtedly be a good signing, United would be better off using that amount of money in their attempt to lure Arturo Vidal away from Juventus. It is, however, worth noting that Bild are the third different paper over two countries to pick up the link between Cuadrado and United, which probably means there’s some sort of interest and either Fiorentina or, more probably, the Colombian’s agent are trying to get themselves as good a deal as possible. |
