Butt and Neville to learn future next week

Posted: 11 Jul 2014 03:56 AM PDT

article-2618138-1D610C9900000578-135_634x387Phil Neville and Nicky Butt will discover whether they’re part of Louis Van Gaal’s plans or not over by the end of next week, once the Dutch manager officially takes over at Manchester United after his World Cup campaign with Holland.

Neville returned to Old Trafford last season as part of David Moyes’ coaching staff and continued to work alongside interim manager Ryan Giggs even after Moyes was sacked in April, but with Van Gaal bringing in three new coaches - Frans Hoek, Marcel Bout and Albert Stuivenberg – and Giggs promoted to assistant manager, Neville’s future remains unclear.

The former United left-back, who has spent the summer as part of the BBC’s commentary team for the World Cup, has admitted he might not be part of Van Gaal’s plans next season.

“Football moves on and sometimes you have to move on. My future will probably be resolved in the next five days,” Neville told the BBC.

“I am speaking with the chief executive [Ed Woodward]. There is no fall-out. If I am not involved [as a coach] I am sure I will be able to play a part in it in other ways.”

Butt, meanwhile, was expected to stay on as manager of the Under 19 side as well as working alongside Warren Joyce with the Under 21 squad but the former United midfielder hasn’t received an official confirmation yet.

“There isn’t a role I would turn down,” said Butt. “The last 18 months have been about my development as a coach. The next step might be managing different aspects of the game.

“I am open to anything but my biggest thing is to have a purpose. Whether that is with 12-year-old kids or the first team is irrelevant.”

United haven’t held talks for Vidal

rp_Arturo-Vidal-009-200x200.jpgDespite reports widely suggesting otherwise, Manchester United did not hold talks with Juventus for Arturo Vidal while negotiating Patrice Evra’s move to the Serie A champions.

United have been monitoring Vidal for months and, according to reports, they had even gone as far as approaching Juventus in spring to enquire about the Chilean midfielder, only to be told that Vidal would not leave Turin.

Over the last couple of weeks, however, reports in the Italian press intensified as United looked poised to table an official offer for the 27-year-old, but Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, an extremely reputable source in terms of transfers, yesterday claimed United did not hold talks with Juventus for the Chilean.

On his website, Di Marzio wrote that while United and Juventus have been in contact to negotiate Evra’s transfer to Italy, Vidal didn’t feature in the discussion between the two clubs even though, by finalising Evra’s move, United might have at least opened a line of communication with the Italian giants.

Reports on the Times, however, slightly contradict Di Marzio’s story by suggesting that United baulked at Juventus’ demand of £36m for the Chilean. With Arsenal signing Alexis Sanchez and Chelsea’s spending spree well underway, United surely can’t afford to try to negotiate a deal for a player of Vidal’s calibre, particularly considering that the club forked out £37m for Juan Mata in January, a wonderful player but not the sort of player who could fill United’s gaping hole in midfield.

Van Gaal not scared by United job

Posted: 11 Jul 2014 01:01 AM PDT

louis-van-gaal-the-netherlands-world-cup_3168088Ryan Giggs has insisted Louis Van Gaal will not be “scared” by the size of the job awaiting him at Manchester United and he expects the Dutchman to be relishing the challenge at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal is a hugely experienced coach, having won titles at Ajax, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and AZ Alkmaar and Giggs was adamant the Holland manager knows exactly what he’ll be expected of him at United but his experience at big clubs ensures he won’t be fazed by the task ahead of him.

“Louis won’t be afraid to take over Manchester United,” said Giggs.

“He will relish it and look forward to it.”He’s been at big clubs – at Barca and Bayern Munich – and in my mind Man United is the biggest. He is not scared about the challenge.

“It won’t be easy but he can't wait and he has got the experience.”

Having spent the last four games of last season as interim manager, Giggs has been included in Van Gaal’s coaching staff and the former United number 11 said he was happy with the way preparations for the upcoming season have gone so far.

“We spoke a few times and exchanged emails. It's been hard but we have been in contact,” said Giggs.

“The preparations have gone well. He will be joining us next week and he will get to meet the players.

“Everything has been planned through Louis, Albert [Stuivenberg] and Marcel [Bout]. The blueprint has been prepared by Louis and we have been following his plans.

“It is not ideal but it can be like this in a World Cup year.”
