Mata hopeful of title

Dutchman Van Gaal was officially presented to the media on Thursday and has been tasked with returning United to the lofty heights of the Premier League table in 2014-15 after the club finished seventh last season. Van Gaal arrives at Old Trafford with a respected CV, having won league titles in the Eredivisie (with Ajax and AZ Alkmaar), La Liga (Barcelona) and the Bundesliga (Bayern Munich). The 62-year-old also led the Netherlands to third place at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, with an emphasis on swift counter-attacking football, and Spanish midfielder Mata said he was anticipating an exciting season in Manchester. Its the start of a new era for the club, with a new manager and players coming in, Mata told MUTV. Im really happy with the managers style of football and hopefully at the end of the season we can celebrate something, which would be amazing for him and for us. United arrived in the United States over the weekend as part of their pre-season tour and they are set to come up against the Los Angeles Galaxy, Roma, Inter and Real Madrid in the International Champions Cup. First up for United is Wednesdays fixture with MLS side LA, the clubs sole focus as they step up preparations for their Premier League opener against Swansea City on August 16. The most important thing is to get ready, step by step and not too hard because injuries can happen, he said. Its important for us to prepare physically and mentally for the long season. Were focused on improving and trying to learn from the manager, to play at our best level during the season. The main idea is to play as a team and compete for titles.

Woodward promises new United signings

Posted: 20 Jul 2014 02:00 PM PDT

United limped to a top-seven finishlast term as they meeklysurrendered the titleto rivals Manchester City, with David Moyes paying the ultimate price for their failure. New manager Louis van Gaal is the man charged with bringing the good times back to Old Trafford and the Dutchman has already addedmidfielder Ander Herrera and full-back Luke Shawto his squad. The likes of Arturo Vidal, Kevin Strootmanand Thomas Vermaelen have also been linked with a move to United and executive vice-chairman Woodward stated that money is available to further strengthen if Van Gaal deems it necessary. There is no fixed budget. Financially we are extremely strong, we have funds available, he told Uniteds official website during the clubs pre-season tour of the United States. Louis is the boss and is assessing whats going on but we have been in dialogue for some time about targets so there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes. Were continuing to move forward on some of those targets. So watch this space. The time he [Van Gaal]spends here as well [in America]hell be able to assess more what hes got and continue to tweak the decisions if we need to. We want to do what it takes to win the title. Uniteds poor domestic performance means they will not take part in continental competitions this season, but Woodward does not expect that to deterpotential signings. Ive experienced a lot of conversations with agents and players and we are still a huge attraction to top football stars around the world - there is no doubt about that, he added. Weve already invested in two new fantastic players.

Woodward: Van Gaal will make United an attacking force

Posted: 20 Jul 2014 12:26 AM PDT

Much of Uniteds glittering success over the past two decades has been built on the clubs attacking philosophy, but David Moyes, Van Gaals Old Trafford predecessor, was pragmatic during his ill-fated 10 months in charge. United last season missed out on a place in the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 1995-96 and the sides Premier League title defence was pitiful as they finished seventh, some 22 points adrift of champions Manchester City. Dutchman Van Gaal who won league titles in Netherlands, Spain and Germany is now tasking with rebuilding and Woodward thinks the 62-year-old will have no trouble winning over United supporters and will also help develop the next generation of stars. Speaking at the end of a week in which Van Gaal formally took charge at United, Woodward told MUTV: Hes got incredible energy and very importantly he likes attacking football. If you remember the Barcelona team [Van Gaal managed] in the late 90s, who played incredible, attacking football, and those games we had against them in 98-99 [when United won the Champions League], thats the kind of football Manchester United fans love. Its part of our DNA. The second part of what he likes is giving youth a chance. Hes got a track record littered with giving young players a break in the first team, who have gone on to be stars. Clearly thats Manchester Uniteds philosophy and we want him to continue with that. Weve got someone who has confidence in himself about making difficult decisions and, when you boil down what makes a great manager, one of the key characteristics is making difficult decisions and weve clearly got a manager who can do that. Woodward believes Van Gaal has already made a big impact behind the scenes at the former Premier League champions. He added: There is real unity in the squad and Louis clearly has something to give in terms of the special way he has with his players when it comes to binding the team together. Weve seen that already with the steps hes taken with the preparation and the training and the things going on around that. Hes going to deliver exactly what we expect him to deliver and in conjunction with Ryan [Giggs, Uniteds assistant manager], who has that great understanding of all these players.
