Germany destroy Brazils final dreams with seven-goal battering

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 03:03 PM PDT

It was the night Germany removed the crown from football royalty. They did so with their own version of the beautiful game and, by the time they had finished, Brazil had suffered an ignominy that was so extreme and implausible it made it feel as though a black marker pen had been taken to the pages of their football history.

No team in that famous shirt has ever suffered in the way Luiz Felipe Scolaris had to during a brutal first half in which Germany scored five times in 19 minutes and played as though the team in front of them might as well have been invited from the beach. Brazil had not lost a competitive match at home since 1975 but they were not just removed from their own World Cup. They were embarrassed in a way that will make them look back on this tournament and want to cover their eyes. It was footballs equivalent of chewing on broken glass and they should probably just be grateful that Germany did not make it even more harrowing after Andre Schürrle had added another two goals in the second half.

Dutch coach expected to revert to 5-3-2 formation

Robin van Persie did not train with his team-mates before Wednesdays match with Argentina due to a stomach bug but Hollands coach, Louis van Gaal, hinted that his captain would play in the World Cup semi-final regardless.

The Manchester United centre-forward, who battled back from knee and thigh injuries to be fit for the World Cup, has looked laboured in recent games. But Van Gaal said Van Persie would play as long as he could shake off a stomach bug, which also affected the defender Daryl Janmaat.

World Cup 2014: Investigation into ticket sales could embarrass Fifa

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 10:48 AM PDT

Footballs governing body faces unwelcome scrutiny after arrests arising from a Brazilian police operation targeting ticket touts

The front-page splash in the Folha de São Paulo newspaper did not concern Neymar or his replacement, Willian, or even Brazils chances against Germany in their World Cup semi-final. Instead the headline concentrated on Operation Jules Rimet, an ongoing investigation by Rio police that has the power to strike at the heart of Fifas power structures.

Just as the World Cup began under the shadow of an avalanche of claims of Fifa corruption, so it may end with the focus being not on the football but on the deals that take place in the shadows of the luxury hotels block booked by the world governing body for the cups duration.

Holland v Argentina semi-final could be settled by the tiniest of details

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 09:39 AM PDT

Lionel Messis brilliance or Louis van Gaals supreme planning could be all thats needed to decide match in an instant

Argentina v Holland: two teams on the up, both fancying their chances its too close to call and I wont dare predict a result. Our neighbours and the Dutch have deservedly made it to the semi-finals and Wednesdays game in São Paulo promises to be an occasion we will remember for a long time judging by how the teams have fared at this World Cup.

Lets start with Argentina. It was clear from the start that Lionel Messi would be their focal point in this tournament and he has delivered when they needed him most, either through vitals goals or assists, or making moves that opened up spaces or created chances for others. That latter scenario we saw in the game against Belgium. Gonzalo Higuaín was the scorer but Messi had created enough havoc to allow the Napoli striker to pounce on that ball.

Hollands Arjen Robben can earn praise his talent merits against Argentina

Posted: 08 Jul 2014 08:26 AM PDT

Much-maligned Dutch winger has come of age as he prepares to face Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals

Arjen Robben is a machine. He might, in the past, have been a highly calibrated unit with a tendency to occasionally malfunction at the worst possible moment. But put aside, if you can, the debate over his theatrics against Mexico in the second round and before his personal semi-final duel with Lionel Messi he has a strong claim to be the player of the tournament so far.

At this World Cup he has resembled nothing so much as the T-1000, the robotic bad guy in the second of Terminator films. After every tumble, twist and fall he has got back up again and resumed his fast, direct running at the defence head up, ball at his feet and panic in the eyes of his prey.
