Did Hollands goalkeeper Tim Krul go too far with his intimidation tactics? Posted: 06 Jul 2014 03:14 AM PDT There is a fine line between gamesmanship and plain cheating. There is no doubt Krul flirted with it That is not normal, Tim Krul said after coming on as a 120th-minute, penalty shootout specialist in Hollands quarter-final win over Costa Rica. You sit the whole match on the bench and then you have to go in and save the penalties. I dont know what I can say. It is indeed not normal, and most of the attention will of course be on Louis van Gaals remarkable decision to replace Jasper Cillessen, who had played well in normal and extra-time, for a goalkeeper going into a shootout cold and without a minute of competitive football in almost two months. Never mind the beautiful game: Brazil learns to win ugly at the World Cup Posted: 06 Jul 2014 02:30 AM PDT The Seleção have reached the final four for the first time since 2002 and will face Germany so is style really the issue? The referee made the right call. An ugly goal like that is illegal. Fired off during Brazils nerve-racking last-16 game against Chile in Belo Horizonte, the tweet mocking the poor finish in Hulks controversially ruled out goal did the rounds among Brazilians. But if, come Tuesday, a Neymar-less Brazil edge out Germany with a shinned goal by the Zenit St Petersburg striker, few would complain. While fans and media have been quick to point out that the Seleção have hardly played eye-catching football in their second hosting of the World Cup, the fact they stand one match away from the final and a possible end to their home jinx trumps style issues. World Cup 2014 talking points: is Van Gaal lucky or is it a steel nerve? Posted: 06 Jul 2014 12:59 AM PDT If Louis van Gaals decision to bring Tim Krul on only for the penalty shootout had backfired, then he wouldve looked ridiculous, but his absence of a fear of failure helped put Holland through Maybe Louis does have a golden willy, said Arjen Robben after Louis van Gaals substitutions and tactical changes won Hollands second round game against Mexico, of course referring to Van Gaals reputation as a lucky manager. Much of management is about good fortune, but the old adage about lucky generals doesnt necessarily apply here. Continue reading...![]() |
