Fifa asks German magazine Der Spiegel to hand over all documents regarding claims that Cameroon players threw their World Cup group games. Spokeswoman, Delia Fischer, says Fifa has substantial doubts about allegations of match-fixing. Fischer says the article published by Der Spiegel has put the integrity of the World Cup into question and that the organisation will continue to monitor the remaining matches carefully. Luis Suárez is close to sealing his preferred move to Barcelona after the Catalan club held a productive first meeting with Liverpool and offered around £70m for the controversial forward.

Barcelonas determination to clinch a deal for the Uruguayan was confirmed during talks between their director of football management, Raul Sanllehi, and Liverpools chief executive, Ian Ayre, in London on Wednesday. Rather than seek a drastically reduced fee for a player banned for four months for biting the Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup, Sanllehis opening bid was in the region of £70m.

Fabio Capello might have thought being mauled by the British tabloids was the most terrifying experience in football but that was before he came across Vladimir Zhirinovsky. The far-right Zhirinovsky, Russias most controversial politician, has branded the Capello a thief and demanded that the Italian appears before parliament to face a grilling from angry MPs over Russias early exit from the World Cup.

Zhirinovsky, head of the Liberal Democratic party, said he would demand that the Dumas committee on sport summon the Italian to answer for Russias poor showing in Brazil. The politician said Capello should be fired if he refuses to attend.

Fifa: No indication of match manipulation on betting market

Fifa have asked German magazine Der Spiegel to provide details of all its conversations with convicted match-fixer Wilson Raj Perumal to prove its claim that a World Cup game could have been fixed.

The governing bodys director of security, Ralf Mutschke, said in a statement read out at a daily briefing in Rio de Janeiro that the allegations put the integrity of Fifa World Cup matches in question, which is a serious allegation.

The mere mention of that country and year brings back a host of memories for anyone lucky enough to have lived through the experience. It pains me to say that they were just before my time; I caught the football bug one year too late and my first exposure to football was of the slightly less vintage Arsenal 1983 team (trust me, it wasn't pretty).

So after passing on my affliction to my seven-year-old son, I decided to sit him down and show him every goal Brazil scored at the 1982 World Cup. And then I decided to rank them from 15 to 1. You may disagree with my final countdown, but I promise not to be too bothered. After all, I got to sit through numerous YouTube clips of this fabulous team. There are worse ways to spend your time.
