Giggs: I cried over thoughts of leaving United

Ryan Giggs has revealed at after the final game of the season, he cried when he realised that it was the last time he could be seeing the players and staff at United as a fellow employee.

Having taking on the role of interim manager and not signed a new deal as a player, Giggs had to face the possibility that Louis van Gaal wouldn’t ask him to stay at the club and he would be saying goodbye, after over two decades at United.

“We got off the plane at Manchester Airport,” he said. “I was saying goodbye to the players, thanking them. Potentially saying goodbye to a lot of players for the last time, a bit of staff, and I'm not an emotional… well, I didn't think I was. I'm not a really emotional person but my car was parked right outside and I thought, ‘I need to get in my car here’. I could feel myself getting emotional. So I get in my car and I just went, started crying, started getting really emotional and I think it was just a mixture of what I've just said, saying goodbye to people for maybe the last time, and the pressure that I put myself under.t sounds stupid now, but it's just not me, it's just not me at all. So I came out the airport and I came at the lights and Nicky Butt has just pulled up next to me and I'm thinking, ‘F***ing hell, I can't let Butty know that I've just been crying’. So I just give him a little wave and just looked the other way and waited for the lights to go green.”

During Ecuador’s 2-2 draw with England last night, Antonio Valencia was the victim of an awful late challenge by Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling, but fortunately for him, his standing leg wasn’t planted. If he hadn’t managed to jump out of the way, he could have been nursing the second bone break of his career.

In response, Valencia grabbed Sterling by the neck and strangled him a couple of times. Sterling was sent off for the challenge and Valencia was sent off for his reaction.

“I am sorry for the fight with Sterling,” Valencia said.. “I apologised to the team after the match and the coach. When he tackled me, I thought about Segundo Castillo [who was hurt against Mexico recently]. He nearly missed the World Cup because of injury and I feared I would too. Thankfully, I am okay.”

Rooney: I’m not bothered by critics

Wayne Rooney was played out of position on the left for England’s 2-2 draw with Ecuador yesterday, but still managed to score a goal.

Several people in the media have claimed that Rooney shouldn’t be guaranteed a starting place but the player insists he isn’t bothered what people have to say.

“I am not really interested,” he told reporters. “A lot of people have their opinions but I listen to the people around me and in the coaching set-up. I don't listen to people outside of the set-up really so anyone, [including] journalists, can say what they want. I have got no interest in listening to them. I enjoy playing for my country – whether it is left wing, right wing, midfield or up front. I am always proud to play for England and that won’t change, no matter where I am on the pitch. It is down to the manager to pick where he plays me and I am happy to play anywhere.”

Following an injury-plagued season, there were fears that Robin van Persie might miss the World Cup after being taken off at half-time in Holland’s 2-0 win over Wales.

Van Persie has revealed to reporters in Holland that they should have nothing to worry about.

“I wouldn’t call it an injury,” he said. “It built up during the game so I decided it was sensible to come off.”

Louis van Gaal echoed Van Persie’s claims but revealed that taking the striker off was just a precaution.

“I hope so, and I think it is so,” van Gaal explained. “He has a little injury and I think it is better that you don’t risk a bigger injury by playing the second half. I think he made the right decision. It is not an important match. You don’t have to risk it.”
