Giggs hints at future United managerial role

The Welshman was asked to take the reins for the end of the 2013-14 campaign when the club ended the tenure of David Moyes. United, however, decided the time was not right for Giggs to have the role on a permanent basis and opted for the experience of current Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal, who will take over at Old Trafford after the FIFA World Cup. Giggssubsequently retired from playing and accepted the position of assistant manager. The 40-year-old is looking forward to working with Van Gaal, and believes his brief managerial stint will bode well for the future. Its been a whirlwind and I wouldnt change it for the world, said Giggs, speaking in an ITVdocumentary, Life of Ryan: Caretaker Manager. It was just a brilliant experience, one that I thoroughly enjoyed and will be all the better for next time it happens. I met Louis and the meeting went really well. I liked him instantly and Im looking forward to working with him and learning from him. Giggs, who won 13 Premier League titles and two UEFA Champions League medals as a player at United, also admitted that he broke down in tears after Uniteds final game of the season with Southampton as he thought his lengthy association with the club was coming to an end. He added: We got off the plane at Manchester Airport and I was saying goodbye to the players, thanking them. Potentially saying goodbye to a lot of players for the last time, a bit of the staff, and Im not an emotional person. Well, I didnt think I was. My car was parked right outside and I thought, I need to get in my car here. I could feel myself getting emotional. So I get in my car and I just went, started crying, started getting really emotional and I think it was just a mixture of what Ive just said, saying goodbye to people for maybe the last time, and the pressure that I put myself under. It sounds stupid now, but its just not me, its just not me at all.

Valencia apologises over England dismissal

The winger was given his marching orders for grabbing Sterling by the neck, twice, in retaliation to a late tackle from the Liverpool man. Both players were sent off for the incident but it was Valencias overzealous reaction that was widely criticised. Valencia said the injury suffered by team-mate Segundo Castillo in a friendly against Mexico on Saturday which nearly forced him to withdraw from the FIFA World Cup played a role in his actions. I apologised to the team after the match and the coach (Reinaldo Rueda), Valencia said afterwards. I am sorry for the fight with Sterling. When he tackled me I thought about Segundo Castillo. He nearly missed the World Cup because of injury and I feared I would too but thankfully I am okay. In an entertaining friendly in Miami, Ecuador needed a stunning 70th-minute equaliser from Michael Arroyo to claim a share of the spoils. The red cards given to Valencia and Sterling will have no impact on the World Cup, which Ecuador open with a clash against Switzerland on June 15.

Rooney happy to play anywhere for England

Rooney netted a first-half equaliser as England drew 2-2 with Ecuador in an international friendly in Florida - ending his four-game run without a goal for his country - but much of the build-up surrounded Roy Hodgson's team selection. Hodgson decided to play Rooney on the left, with new Liverpool signing Rickie Lambert picked to lead the line after the Manchester United star was criticised for his performance against Peru at Wembley last week. But Rooney, who publicly voiced his displeasure about playing out of position during Sir Alex Ferguson's final season in charge at Old Trafford in 2012-13, says he is willing to play anywhere for England ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. "I enjoy playing for my country, whether it's left wing, right wing, midfield or up front," Rooney told reporters. "I've said before I'm always proud to play for England and that won't change no matter where I am on the pitch. "It's down to the manager to pick where he wants to play me and I'm happy to play anywhere." England wrap up World Cup preparations against Honduras on Saturday, before facing Italy in their opening Group D fixture on June 15. They will also come up against Uruguay and Costa Rica.
