Wilshere: I called Scholes after criticism Posted: 14 May 2014 07:50 PM PDT Wilshere, 22, was so surprised by Scholes analysis of his career - which saw the former Manchester United midfielder claim the Englishman was a really top young player, but he has not really gone on in March - that he endeavoured to discuss it with the 39-year-old. The 15-time England international said he was prompted to contact Scholes via Twitter, with another former United player turn TV pundit Gary Neville the middle man. I remember watching it, he was having a go at Arsenal, and I was thinking: Is he going to come for me? Wilshere said. If it had come from a rubbish player I could say: What are you talking about? But it came from Paul Scholes. For me he was the best English midfielder of all time. For the next few days after he said that I sat down and talked to my Dad and a few of the coaches here. I respect him so much and I think he can make a great coach for any young player. Im a young player and hes been there and done it so I wanted to hear what he had to say. You live in a world of football where you get criticised all the time. It hurt a bit more when he did it. But in the game today everyone is improving all the time, its getting quicker. I just wanted to know what he thought. I DMed Gary to ask whether I could have his number. Gary Neville wrote back to me: Just go easy on him. We (Scholes and I) had quite a good chat. Hes entitled to his opinion. He explained it a bit better and told me what he thought I should work on. He was right in a certain way. When I first burst on to the scene there was all this blah, blah, blah (hype) and then I got injured. Ive had bad luck with injuries but I cant keep saying Ive been injured a lot. There comes a time when you stop being a kid and I think thats what hes referring to. Hes young, hes got all this potential, you have to start putting that potential in (to practice). This season Ive improved a lot, scored a few more than I have in the past (five in 42) and got a few more assists. You can keep the ball and you can look good but its those stats that matter. Thats what I have to build on. Wilshere is set to help break Arsenals nine-year trophy drought, when he lines up for the club in the FA Cup final against Hull City on Saturday. Giggs can’t remember if he’s retiring or not Posted: 14 May 2014 02:28 AM PDT Giggs reportedly made his mind up last week after an evening of reflection and naps, but can no longer recall what it was that he decided to do. "Sometimes I think I can still cut it at the highest level – after all, I've still got most of my hair and all of my teeth – but at other times I just want to sit in my armchair with a box of wine and a Bergerac omnibus," he told FourFourTwo. "It wasn't an easy decision to make, but in the end I'm sure it was the right one, whatever it was. I even wrote it on a piece of paper so I wouldn't forget, but I think I might have posted it to Clayton Blackmore by mistake. "I spent most of the Hull game trying to remember. But I kept worrying I'd left the gas on, and thinking about how I should have worn an extra jumper." Giggs has been at Old Trafford since 1987, and is a father figure to a number of the current squad, though he has always denied biological paternity. The Welsh legend praised the debut performances of youngsters James Wilson and Tom Lawrence against Hull, but refrained from commenting on David Meyler's alleged stamp on Adnan Januzaj. "My eyes have started to go, so I didn't see the incident," he said, giving yet another indication that he is ready for the top job. Neville: Man United guilty of panic buying Posted: 14 May 2014 01:06 AM PDT Manager David Moyes paid the price for United's dismal season last month, losing his job less than a year after being appointed as Alex Ferguson's successor. However, Neville has pointed to a deeper problem, claiming too few of the players recently bought by the Old Trafford club have been good enough. He believes United should back their youth academy graduates - such as James Wilson - rather than bring in second-tier signings. "United have panicked into signing players who were not their top choices," the 39-year-old said. "It was quite public last summer who United's targets were – it was either (Gareth) Bale or (Cristiano) Ronaldo, it was (Cesc) Fabregas, it was (Leighton) Baines and it was (Marouane) Fellaini (only the latter joined the club). "They were the targets, it was publicised – and I don't know why because Manchester United have always kept their transfer dealings really quiet. I'm not quite sure how all of a sudden everyone knows who they are signing. "But if they can't get number one, number two, three, four, I'm not in a rush. "As a Manchester United fan, I'd rather see James Wilson come through than some fourth-choice striker who isn't at the top of the list. "I don't want signing number eight, nine, 10 because they can't get number one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. I have no interest in that." Neville hopes Louis van Gaal, who is expected to be United's manager next season, will focus on quality over quantity when looking to sign new players. "If he (Van Gaal) decides he wants eight players, that doesn't mean he should go and buy eight players," Neville said. "Signing three or four real top-quality (players) – and improving next season, bedding them in and then going again with two or three more the year after is the organic approach I would expect Manchester United to have. "However, I didn't expect Manchester United to sack a manager after 10 months, so what's going to happen in the next few months, who knows?" |
Bruce opens Hull door for departing Ferdinand Posted: 13 May 2014 10:28 PM PDT Ferdinand revealed on Monday he has played his last game for United but claimed he is 'ready for a new challenge', opening up the possibility of extending his playing career at another club. That could be at Hull as another former United defender Bruce, who is now manager at the East Yorkshire club, claimed he might give Ferdinand a call after getting through Saturday's FA Cup final versus Arsenal. "We've cast an eye on a few things. I haven't looked into that (Ferdinand) yet, because the news only broke last night," Bruce said on Tuesday. "Rio has been a wonderful player. Who knows? If he fancies a game..." "We've got Arsenal at Wembley on Saturday, so let me get over the weekend first, then I'll see if we'll give him a call." Bruce has form when it comes to signing former United players, having recruited Wes Brown and John O'Shea during his time as manager of Sunderland. The 53-year-old manager will lead Hull in their first FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday, after keeping the club in the Premier League - four points above the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Bruce took the time to bemoan the sacking of Tim Sherwood at Tottenham, which was announced on Tuesday. Bruce claimed Sherwood's dismissal reminded him of the way coaches are sacked in South America and other European countries. "Looking at it from the outside, Tim's done a really terrific job," Bruce said. "I'm sad to see another manager go. It is really disappointing, and it's happening too often now. "I never thought I'd see the day but it's now becoming like it is in Europe and South America. "In fact, we're probably worse now. The average (managerial) lifespan, as we keep getting told from the LMA (League Managers Association), is 13 months, and now another good young manager has lost his job. "To be honest, looking from the outside, I don't know how much more he could have done. In terms of results, he's been terrific." Tottenham finished sixth in the Premier League this season, 10 points off a UEFA Champions League qualifying berth, while Sherwood finished his tenure with the London-based club with a record of 14 wins, four draws and 10 losses. |
England want to create history, says Rooney Posted: 13 May 2014 07:04 PM PDT Not much is expected of England in Brazil, especially after Roy Hodgson named the second-youngest squad in the nation's history on Monday. But speaking to the Mirror, Rooney backed his team-mates to advance ahead of Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica in Group D and add to their maiden World Cup triumph, which was back in 1966. "We can all be heroes," Rooney said. "It's our chance to make history for our country and you don't get many opportunities. "You see all the programmes on TV, looking back at the history of the World Cup and that's what we want to do. "We want to create our own bit of history so in years to come, people will look back at what we did. It's there, the stage is set. We just have to go out and deliver. "It would be great if in years from now, people say 'remember England in 2014' because that means we will have done really well or won it." Key to England's hopes at the showpiece event is Rooney, who has scored 38 goals in 89 appearances since making his debut against Australia in 2003. However, question marks still linger as to whether Rooney can perform at the World Cup, having failed to find the back of the net in Germany (2006) and South Africa (2010). The 28-year-old has been under an injury cloud in those two previous tournaments, however, which is no different this time around after a groin injury sidelined him for Manchester United's final two Premier League games of the season. But he has reassured fans that he is fit and ready to go for England's opening game against Italy in Manaus on June 14. "You always feel this can be your tournament," he said. "It hasn't happened for me at the last two World Cups but I've prepared as well as I can for this tournament. I'll be ready and fully fit and I'm really excited about that. "It's about the team and as a team we have to do well and I'm hoping I can be part of that. I know if I have the tournament I know I can have, then we'll do really well."
