Everton 2-3 Man City Not the most thrilling of five-goal thrillers. That's probably being a tad harsh on a game that ended dramatically with Everton pushing for a late leveller amid six minutes of stoppage time. But there was strangely subdued atmosphere at Goodison Park, with not the same roar that has inspired wins over Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United this season. A proportion of the Toffees' support were perhaps not keen on witnessing a home win which would aid Liverpool's title tilt, although manager Roberto Martinez was quick to praise his players for upholding the club's integrity. "The effort, the character of the players, the intention of winning the game was clear for everyone to see from the first second until the last The way we celebrated Ross Barkley's goal is as big a roar as you got at Goodison for the whole season," he said. Swans boss Garry Monk bemoaned his team's late defensive lapse with Michel Vorm rarely tested over the course of the afternoon; just 4 of Saints' 18 efforts being on target. "I can't actually remember Vorm making a save the whole game. We had the best chances - how we came away from that game with nothing is hard to take," he said. "It's been the story of our season. Poyet thrilled with miracle Sunderland run

Sunderland appeared all but relegated after a nightmare run that saw them take just one point from a possible 27, but a 2-2 draw a Manchester City on April 16 kick-started a remarkable revival. Poyet's men won at Chelsea three days after their draw at the Etihad Stadium, before then beating now-relegated Cardiff City 4-0 last time out and winning at Old Trafford on Saturday. The Wearside club are now three points clear of third-bottom Norwich City - who visit Chelsea on Sunday - with two games remaining. "I'm feeling great," said Poyet. "Our idea was always to win four games - we've won three, we've drawn one. We're still one win away. "Of course we can have a hand from Chelsea tomorrow. We'll be watching but we need to concentrate on what we do. We're in a position where have two home games - win one and we're over the line. "But what we've done in the last four games is unique, special. Maybe you'd even call it a miracle. Miracle is a word I used a few weeks ago. Apparently every now and again, it happens. Giggs at a loss to explain Sunderland defeat

Sebastian Larsson scored the only goal of the match on the half-hour mark to give the visitors chances of Premier League survival a huge boost. But Giggs - in interim charge of the Old Trafford club for the second game - admitted his disappointment at the standard of his sides display. I still believe that theres quality in the dressing room and we showed that last week (4-0 win against Norwich City), we just didnt this week, he said. Whether it be lack of confidence or concentration, I honestly dont know. There was a lack of quality in the final third. First half, we got some decent crosses in, we just didnt get enough people in the box. Second half, we had all the possession and just couldnt find that key pass or that bit of quality that would have got us back in the game. Im sure if wed have scored one, wed have gone on to score a few more. Lack of quality and lack of concentration in the final third. And Giggs feels United, who parted company with former boss David Moyes last month, have suffered as a result of their poor home form this season. Weve shown good form away from home, but at Old Trafford seems to have been the problem this year, he continued. Giggs also paid tribute to Gus Poyets visitors, who are now three points clear of the relegation zone, with two matches left to play. Sunderland are on a great run, credit to them today, and against decent opposition you need to produce consistent performances and thats whats lacked this year, he added.

A draw at Manchester City and a win over Chelsea preceded last weekend's vital 4-0 triumph for Sunderland against Cardiff and Gus Poyet's men made it 10 points from the last 12 on offer thanks to Sebastian Larsson's first-half volley. Defeats to Stoke City and Newcastle United respectively meant Fulham and Cardiff's fates were sealed, whileEmanuele Giaccherini and Fabio Borini both hit the United woodwork in the closing stages. Sunderland now hold a three-point lead over third-bottom Norwich City - who take on Chelsea on Sunday in their penultimate game - and a vastly superior goal difference. Following a vibrant 4-0 win over Norwich last Sunday, interim United manager Ryan Giggs crashed back down to earth as a lacklustre display that allowed the visitors to claim a first league win at Old Trafford since May 1968. A combination of illness and a minor groin injury kept Wayne Rooney on the sidelines - the only enforced change of five made by Giggs to his starting XI. Former United defender John O'Shea almost turned Michael Carrick's 16th-minute cross into his own goal, while Nani fizzed over and Patrice Evra headed a 20th-minute corner into Vito Mannone's arms - though clear-cut chances were at a premium. However, United's early lethargy remained and the travelling supporters were able to enliven a pensive Old Trafford atmosphere when Sunderland took a 30th-minute lead. Darren Fletcher allowed in-form striker Connor Wickham to send over a cross from the right and Larsson sent a controlled volley into the bottom-left corner. Sunderland winger Adam Johnson twice failed to capitalise on poor clearances from goalkeeper David de Gea as United staggered towards the interval in disarray. United's pedestrian tempo continued after the break but Johnson switched off to allow the overlapping Evra into the box and his 50th-minute centre was superbly cleared behind by Wes Brown with Javier Hernandez poised to convert. Nemanja Vidic headed wide when the resulting corner was worked back into the area and Sunderland suddenly found themselves defending perilously deep. Activity in front of the away team's goal became somewhat frantic and Carrick and Vidic were both unable to force headers home when Phil Jones chipped towards the back post. Sunderland almost made the points safe on an increasingly rare foray forward after 71 minutes - substitute Giaccherini hitting the post before Jack Colback crashed the rebound into the side netting. By that stage, Giggs had also called for considerable reinforcements in the form of Adnan Januzaj, Danny Welbeck and Robin van Persie and the latter almost enjoyed a dream return from his knee injury but prodded wide from Jones' delivery. Fellow striker Hernandez skied over from Evra's 81st minute cutback before Borini came agonisingly close to compounding United's misery, striking the woodwork with De Gea rooted to the spot. Reports this week suggested Van Persie's countryman Louis van Gaal is the front-runner to become David Moyes' permanent successor at Old Trafford and he may have a major overhaul on his hands on this evidence.
