Posted: 01 May 2014 07:37 PM PDT Rooney limped off at club training and was sent to hospital for scans, which could cast a shadow over his availability for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. It is not Rooneys first injury issue nearing a World Cup, with his latest issue digging up memories of a broken metatarsal that stunted his involvement in Germany eight years ago. It remains unclear if the injury is related to a chipped bone in his foot that required him to take pain-killing injections before the UEFA Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena three weeks ago. With United languishing in seventh position in the Premier League, interim manager Ryan Giggs will be unlikely to risk Rooney should there be any doubts about his fitness heading into Saturdays home clash against Sunderland. But England coach Roy Hodgson will be facing an anxious wait to discover if his star man will be available for their Group D campaign against Uruguay, Costa Rica and Italy in Brazil. There is a little over a month before Englands opening clash with Italy, and they have already lost Theo Walcott, Kyle Walker and Jay Rodriguez to injury, while Andros Townsend is also out of contention due to an ankle problem. |
Pogba accuses United of disrespect Posted: 01 May 2014 06:34 PM PDT Pogbas stint at Old Trafford was never short on controversy, with the Premier League giants forced into a legal battle regarding his signature from Le Havre in France. The Frenchman arrived at United in October 2009, and was mainly a youth team player before breaking through for his first Premier League appearance in January 2012. But as soon as he got his break, his tenure would end - with Sir Alex Ferguson failing to extend Pogbas contract. United had claimed Pogba wanted a move, but the now 21-year-old said the club falsified his ambitions at the time. They left me out because they said I wanted to leave. That is disrespect, Pogba told the BBC. Maybe they didnt think if they were making a mistake. Ferguson had claimed Pogba failed to respect United at the time, but the Juve man said he was forced to train away from the playing group as his contract expired. Manchester United is a big club but you have to think about yourself, Pogba said. You have to play. The coach told me there would be space to play, but I wasnt playing. I was training alone for one week. They told me to go in the gym. I said, I am not an athlete, I am a footballer. |
Saha backs Giggs for United role Posted: 01 May 2014 01:23 PM PDT Giggs was placed in temporary control at United following David Moyes sacking last month, less than 12 months into a six-year deal. Uniteds first match under the veteran Welsh winger was a comprehensive 4-0 win over Norwich City on Saturday and he will be in charge for the clubs remaining three fixtures this season. Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal has been heavily linked with the permanent job, with Giggs potentially becoming part of his backroom staff, but Saha called for his former team-mate to be given a chance. I know Ryans relishing the chance and I think he deserves a chance, he told Sky Sports News. Its a great opportunity for him. He definitely has the quality, he has the character, the strength and the charisma. Theres no doubt about that. Experience is the only thing that is missing from him but you know when you play more than 20 years at Manchester United you know how to work, you know exactly how to behave. I may be wrong, but I think its a bit sad, maybe he could have been given a month more to settle, to prove to people hes the right choice. Four games is not enough, I think. Premier League Preview: Man United vs Sunderland Posted: 01 May 2014 07:01 AM PDT A downbeat Gus Poyet stated after last month's 5-1 hammering that it would take a "miracle" for his Sunderland side to avoid relegation from the Premier League, as they languished at the foot of the table. The Wearside club have enjoyed a remarkable resurgence since then, though, drawing 2-2 at title favourites Manchester City and pulling off a stunning 2-1 win at Chelsea. They then rose to the occasion to hammer fellow strugglers Cardiff City 4-0 in a crunch clash at the Stadium of Light last Sunday, a victory that moved Poyet's men out of the bottom three for the first time since February. United will be a different proposition under Giggs, who replaced the sacked David Moyes last week and savoured a 4-0 victory over beleaguered Norwich City in his first game in charge. There is a new-found belief that Sunderland can pull of a great escape, though, and they have fond memories of their League Cup semi-final against United in January - when they won on penalties. Striker Fabio Borini, scorer of two penalties in their last two games, is bullish over the north-east club's chances of staying up and Saturday's trip to Old Trafford holds no fear for the on-loan Liverpool striker. "We have two more home games left and one away and we need to keep believing." he told the club's official website. "We've made a big step forward and must keep doing the same. "We must go to Manchester like we did in the cup semi-final, our visit to Manchester (City) a couple of weeks ago, and the game at Chelsea. "It doesn't matter who we play against, we play for ourselves first of all." Borini has struck up a great understanding with Connor Wickham, who has been given a new lease of life by Poyet and heads to Old Trafford with a spring in his step after scoring five goals in his last three games. History is not Sunderland's side, however, as they have not beaten United on their own patch since way back in 1968. There has been much talk of Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal being appointed as the next United boss, but Giggs is at the helm until the end of the season and the Welshman will be eager to build on a dream start. United still have a chance of qualifying for the UEFA Europa League - they are six points behind Tottenham with a game in hand and far better goal difference. Rafael da Silva (knock) is expected to miss out and the champions will likely be without striker Robin van Persie (knee) once again, though the Dutchman reportedly returned to light training this week. Poyet could name an unchanged side, although midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini staked his claim for a start by scoring one goal and setting up another after coming off the bench against Cardiff. Cattermole: One win could be enough to stay up Posted: 01 May 2014 01:10 AM PDT Gus Poyet's men looked doomed to relegation after a 1-0 home defeat to Everton on April 12, but a run of seven points from three matches against Manchester City, Chelsea and Cardiff City have revitalised the team. Sunderland now sit 17th, above the drop zone on goal difference, having played a game fewer than all of the sides in the bottom three. Cattermole and his team-mates travel to Manchester United on Saturday, before home games with West Brom and Swansea City, and the 26-year-old thinks as little as three points from those three fixtures could ensure survival. "A few games ago, we were looking to get 10 points," he told the Sunderland Echo. "After the last three games, we're three points away from that now. Another win might be enough, but we have to look to win every game. "I know the next game is Man United, but we've done well away from home all season. "For what's at stake for us, I think we're as committed as anyone at the minute. "Whether that's against Man United under a new manager or Cardiff, we've got to match everyone in every department."
