Fletch: I’m still dreaming of playing in the Champions League final

Posted: 08 Apr 2014 09:50 AM PDT

Darren Fletcher has yet to feature in a Champions League final, despite being at the club during the three finals United have played in over recent years.

He was an unused substitute in 2008 when he lost out to Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes. In 2009 Fletch was wrongly shown a straight red card during United’s 3-1 victory over Arsenal in the second leg, having beaten them 1-0 in the first leg, after making a great challenge on Cesc Fabregas to win the ball. In 2011 he lost out to Carrick and Ryan Giggs. In both the games he was on the bench he was an unused sub.

“For whatever reasons, I've not managed to play in a final,” he explained at the press conference. “Different circumstances have prevented me from playing in three of them. It's been a dream of mine since I was a small boy to play in a Champions League final and winning tomorrow night takes us into the semi-finals and gets you closer to achieving that. But it's more important that the club and team get there than individuals and, if the team get there, then you do your best in the games and hope that you're selected to play in it. But as I said before, the most important thing for us is to win tomorrow night and get ourselves in the semi-finals, then we'll take it from there.”

Rooney: Of course I believe we can go through

Posted: 08 Apr 2014 09:38 AM PDT

Ahead of tomorrow night’s Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich, with United taking a 1-1 draw from the first leg, Wayne Rooney has said he believes we can go through.

"We believe we can go through, we believe we have good enough players," Wayne said during an interview with UEFA.com. "It will be tough because, for me, Bayern and Barcelona are probably the two best teams in the competition. We have to be at our best, we have to be focused and prepare well. We are ready. It is an exciting game for us, for the fans… it’s a massive game to be involved in."

Asked if he believes in United's Champions League chances, Rooney says: "Of course I do. I think we have to. We have seen in the past with so many different teams. Everyone has their favourites each year – Bayern or Barcelona – but it doesn’t always happen. For instance, when Chelsea won it in 2012, I think they nearly went out three times."

Last week it was reported that Rooney would miss the game with a toe injury although now it is looking more likely that he will play. Rooney trained ahead of today’s game and is obviously hugely keen to be involved tomorrow. David Moyes has insisted that United won’t do anything medically wrong to allow Rooney to play but the striker is happy to take an injection so that he is available.

Mata: I’ll be supporting United from my armchair on Wednesday

Posted: 08 Apr 2014 01:38 AM PDT

Juan Mata has updated his blog and reflected on his best United performance to date, with him scoring two and assisting another in United’s win over Newcastle.

“Hi everyone:

The truth is, after a game like Saturday’s, I realise once again how nice football can be, and how much you enjoy the few days following a victory and a good performance. I still have a smile on my face :-) To spend a relaxed Sunday knowing that you have done your job is priceless. And it was not an easy thing to do in St. James’ Park, but the team delivered and we got three more points to keep this great streak on away games.

After the match I was very happy from a personal point of view; moreover, I was really pleased with the effort made by all players to win, and it’s a key victory to try to climb on the table and to go to Germany full of confidence.

I scored and enjoyed on the pitch again; I wish the streak goes on until the end of the season. As I said after the game, I have a very good understanding with my team-mates and I was also very happy with Chicha and Adnan’s goals.

By the way, you may wonder about my celebration with De Gea… The reason is that we had been practising free-kicks the day before and David said I was going to score against Newcastle… because that day I was misfiring all my shots! And so it happened :-)

This victory gives us a lot of energy for our game in Munich on Wednesday. In the first leg, the support from Old Trafford was our power to cope with such a tough game. It was a great night that I had to enjoy from the stands. On Wednesday I’ll be supporting from home, in front of the TV, aware that the Allianz Arena is one of the toughest stadiums in Europe… but also aware that we are Manchester United and I’m sure we can make it through!

In Spain it seems the battle for the title will be thrilling until the very end. The top-three teams won, including Atlético, who had a complicated match, and Real Madrid, in a remarkable 0-4 in Anoeta, Real Sociedad’s fortress. At this stage they all know that dropping one single point can make the difference and that is stressing… At the bottom of the table things are yet to be decided. In that regard, Elche’s victory against Getafe was one of the main games of the weekend.

Last week I visited Lymm, a village full of historical buildings surrounded by canals. A perfect place to relax and forget about everything. Since we don’t play the next weekend I may try another escape somewhere else. I invite you to make suggestions ;)

Once again, thank you very much for your support and for your recent messages. I read you! I hope I can keep my good streak!
