Rooney wants United armband

Rooney wants United armband

The England international, 28, has been strongly tipped to replace Serbian defender and current captain Nemanja Vidic, who has agreed to an off-season move to Serie A outfit Inter. It remains unclear how long national team captain Steven Gerrard, 33, will play on at international level and whether the Liverpool midfielder will continue beyond the FIFA World Cup. Rooney feels he is a leader at United even without the armband, but said he wanted the captaincy if manager David Moyes believed he was the best man for the job. Ive done it a few times and, if the manager wants me to be the captain, I would have no problem with that, Rooney told club magazine Inside United. I would take it with both hands. However, it is down to the manager, because its his decision on whoever he feels is the right person to lead the team. Im sure hell make that decision when the time comes. Whether youve got the armband or not, I always feel Im quite vocal on the pitch. I try to help the players when I feel I can and say what I think. I believe thats the most important thing, to be honest and say what you feel. If you say what you believe are the right things, you need to keep doing that. Speaking about England, who he has captained previously, Rooney said there were several players capable of taking on the captaincy. You dont know what Steven is going to do in the summer, only he knows, Rooney said. Itd be a great honour to captain my country but, again, its the managers call and Im sure hell have a few contenders.

Vermaelen unsure over Arsenal future

Posted: 12 Mar 2014 08:36 AM PDT

The Belgium international has started only eight games for the London club in the current campaign due to a combination of injury and manager Arsene Wenger's preference for pairing Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker in the heart of his defence. Vermaelen played the full 90 minutes in Tuesday's UEFA Champions League draw against Bayern Munich at left-back, but speculation over his future continues to mount. Manchester United, Napoli and Barcelona have all been linked with a move for Vermaelen, but the former Ajax man insists he has no idea what will happen at the end of the season. "There has been a lot of speculation, but I can't talk about it because I don't know what is going on."Vermaelen is quoted as saying after the defeat to Bayern. "My focus is at Arsenal at the moment. There is still a lot to play for - I can't do anything about rumours. "It is not easy, but I try to stay positive. "Firstly, I have been injured in the last couple of weeks, but when the boss needs me, I try to play well. "I know anything can happen, so I am happy to play when he needs me. "From my point of view, I hope it is as much as it can be. I work hard for the team and that is the only thing that I can do."

Rooney keen to captain club and country

Posted: 12 Mar 2014 01:40 AM PDT

United skipper Nemanja Vidic will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, with a switch to Serie A outfit Inter already agreed. Vidics prospective departure leaves United manager David Moyes with the task of selecting a new captain to take over from the Serbian. And 28-year-old striker Rooney revealed he would be keen to step up if offered the opportunity. Ive captained a few times for United and if the manager wants me to be captain, Id have no problem with that, Rooney told club magazineInside United. The England captaincy could also soon be up for grabs, should Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard elect to call time on his international career after this years FIFA World Cup. And Rooney, who has captained his country twice in his 89 appearances to date, would also relish the chance to lead England on a full-time basis. Itd be a great honour to captain my country but, again, its the managers call and Im sure hell have a few contenders, he added. You dont know what Steven is going to do in the summer, only he knows.
