Moyes treatment has been unfair, says Lambert

Moyes treatment has been unfair, says Lambert

Posted: 27 Mar 2014 02:18 PM PDT

Moyes has been the target of regular criticism after failing to live up to the lofty heights set by former United manager Alex Ferguson. Ferguson led the Old Trafford outfit to 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cup crowns and two UEFA Champions League successes during a trophy-laden stint at the club that spanned more than 26 years. United may still be in the Champions Leagues last eight where they will meet Bayern Munich over two legs but their domestic form has been poor, and they sit a disappointing seventh in the Premier League table after a 3-0 home loss to rivals Manchester City. Speaking ahead of Villas trip to Old Trafford on Saturday, Lambert expressed his belief that his fellow Scot had been hard done by, and criticised reports that the clubs fans will fly a plane with a derogatory Moyes banner over the ground during the match. He is trying his best for Manchester United, the way I am for Aston Villa, Lambert said. It comes with the territory. In the modern game, you are always one bad result away from being absolutely criticised. In years gone by you probably would have got a lot of time, but now the success people want is instant. But if you are talking about flying an aeroplane over the stadium with a message to say you are not wanted, it is a bit extreme. I think some of the criticism is way over the top, I really do. I think the magnitude of the job is huge. Only David can truly tell you about that, but from the outside looking in, it is a massive, massive job. It is not as if he is standing out there and thinking things are not going well, but I still feel good. He is human like everybody else and when you get that level of criticism it would not be nice.

Pochettino: Shaw good enough for any team

Posted: 27 Mar 2014 10:08 AM PDT

Speculation over Shaw's future intensified on Thursday when media reports linked the 18-year-old with a potential switch to Real Madrid. Chelsea and Manchester United are also thought to be admirers of the England international, who could significantly boost his value if he features at this year's FIFA World Cup in Brazil. And Pochettino did not play down Shaw's talent or ability when quizzed about the Real reports in his news conference ahead of Saturday's home match against Newcastle United. He said: "He can play at Real Madrid or in the world starting 11. He has the quality to do so." Shaw has belied his age to start in 28 of Southampton's 31 Premier League matches this season. Pochettino's contract situation is also noteworthy, with the Argentinian said to be unhappy with Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese's departure in January. His future beyond this season is not known but he refused to give away any details. "I'll repeat what I said exactly last week," he said. "Everything is calm and we are working to finish the season off as best as possible." Southampton host Newcastle knowing they can move ahead of their opponents in the table with victory. Pochettino is expecting a response from Newcastle though, with Alan Pardew's side beaten 3-0 at home by Everton on Tuesday. "We're expecting quite a physical side, a very strong side, especially after being defeated at their home ground against Everton," he added. "They will be wanting to put it right. We are expecting a very physical opponent." Pochettino also revealed that Japan defender Maya Yoshida was sidelined for the next month, but still believes he will be fit for the World Cup. "Maya has a problem with his knee ligaments, so we expect he'll be out for six weeks," he continued. Southampton are also monitoring the fitness of defender Nathaniel Clyne, midfielder Steven Davis and forward Jay Rodriguez, who are battling knocks ahead of Saturday's fixture.

Premier League Preview: Man United vs Aston Villa

Posted: 27 Mar 2014 08:35 AM PDT

The televised Premier League clash at Old Trafford is likely to be overshadowed by events off the pitch - or rather in the air to be more precise - as a section of the club's supporters look set to call for the under-fire Scot to be removed. The comprehensive manner in which United have slumped to back-to-back 3-0 home defeats against bitter rivals Liverpool and Manchester City in the last fortnight has sparked much debate about Moyes' future. And the ex-Everton boss could be in for an uncomfortable afternoon against Villa as a plane brandishing the message 'Wrong One - Moyes Out', a reference to 'The Chosen One' banner at OId Trafford, will be flown over the stadium after being funded by a group of angry fans. On the pitch, seventh-placed United will attempt to restore some pride and put an end to a three-game winless streak on home soil in the Premier League. The return of club captain Nemanja Vidic from a two-game ban is a timely boost, as is the fact that the crestfallen defending champions have an excellent record against Villa. United have won the last six games between the two clubs and are unbeaten in nine encounters in all competitions. The 3-0 victory at Villa Park back in December provided a rare highlight in an otherwise turbulent first season in charge for Moyes, who is still without Robin van Persie (knee). With United set to face holders Bayern Munich in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie on Tuesday, Wayne Rooney has issued a rallying call to his team-mates to move on from the Liverpool and City setbacks. "We've got two big games coming up against Bayern Munich, but first we have to focus on the Villa game and try to end the season on a positive note," said the striker, who scored a spectacular long-range strike in the 2-0 success at West Ham last weekend. Villa head to Old Trafford striving to be the 10th team to leave with a point or more in the Premier League this season. And while the 1-0 win over leaders Chelsea earlier this month and 2-2 draw at Liverpool in January shows that Paul Lambert's men are capable of more than holding their own in big games, Villa were ruthlessly beaten 4-1 by Stoke City last weekend to ground the club's players. Lambert will nevertheless be targeting a top-half finish, with his side relatively comfortably clear of relegation trouble. Karim El Ahmadi (thigh strain) and Andreas Weimann (dead leg) are both doubts after being withdrawn in the first half against Stoke. Despite a disappointing display against Stoke, midfielder Marc Albrighton is confident of troubling United. "If we can go to Old Trafford, put in a performance and get a result, everyone will forget about Sunday," he said.

Fellaini defends himself over Zabaleta clash

Posted: 27 Mar 2014 02:23 AM PDT

Manchester United midfielder Fellaini raised his forearm and made contact with City defender Zabaleta's face in the first half of his team's 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford on Tuesday. Referee Michael Oliver deemed the incident worthy of only a yellow card, when many suggested Fellaini was perhaps lucky not to receive a red. However, the Belgium international has insisted he meant his opponent no harm. "I certainly didn't do it on purpose," Fellaini toldThe Daily Mail. "I put my arm up to try and protect possession of the ball, and Zabaleta bounced against it. "He was unlucky to make contact. The movement by me was not in an aggressive manner. "It was a defensive move to protect the ball."

Dortmund chief aiming to keep star players

Posted: 26 Mar 2014 08:32 AM PDT

Prolific striker Robert Lewandowski will join Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich at the end of the season, while the likes of Marco Reus andIlkay Gundogan have been linked with moves away from Signal Iduna Park. Manchester United are reportedly keen to take playmaker Reus to Old Trafford, and both Real Madrid and United are said to be interested in midfielder Gundogan. Gundogan's contract expires next year, but he has been offered a new deal and Watzke has denied suggestions Dortmund will look to cash in on the 23-year-old. "We would like to prolong with Ilkay. He has an offer on the table," Watzke told Sport Bild. "The decision will certainly not wait until the summer." Watzke stressed that the same applies for fellow Germany international Reus and any other Dortmund players that are in demand, but under contract. "We absolutely do not see the need to sell players who have an existing contract." he said.

Thohir clarifes comments on Inter targets

Posted: 26 Mar 2014 05:34 AM PDT

The Indonesian businessman said on Tuesday that one of the trio could "maybe" become his latest signing at Inter. Thohir has been quick to spend since taking over at San Siro in October last year - sanctioning the arrivals of Hernanes and Danilo D'Ambrosio as well as agreeing a deal for Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic. However, Thohir has suggested his previous comments about Chelsea forward Torres, Real Madrid youngster Morata and Manchester City's Dzeko should not be taken as a guarantee that Inter are on the verge of concluding another transfer. "What I said is that we need someone up top," Thohir explained. "The media have written about those players and I mentioned that one of them would be good for Inter." Vidic is set to arrive at the end of the season and could be joined by fellow Premier League defender Bacary Sagna, with the Arsenal man in the final year of his contract. Thohir revealed earlier in the week that Sagna was a target for the Serie A side but has since dismissed reported interest in Vidic's United team-mate Patrice Evra. "Evra and Sagna? We've never had any negotiations with Evra. We're interested in Sagna because we need to balance the team. Right now we only have (Yuto) Nagatomo and Jonathan," he added. "If one of them gets injured you need somebody else to come in. But if Sagna decided to stay in England, we'd understand and in that case we might bring in a young player from our academy."

Rooney: Man United have lost the fear factor

Posted: 26 Mar 2014 04:38 AM PDT

The forward branded United's performance in Tuesday's 3-0 defeat to rivals Manchester City as a "bad night" as Moyes' men fell to a sixth home league loss this season. Old Trafford developed a reputation as a fortress across two decades of Premier League dominance but the defending champions appear to have lost that aura. Teams are heading to United in the belief that they can win, as evidenced by their recent return of just one point from three home matches, in which they have conceded eight goals. And Rooney confessed that visiting sides no longer feared facing United on home soil. "It's not good enough," the England striker toldMUTV. "We can't lose six homes games in a season and we have to put that right, and make this a place which teams fear again. "It's probably been the story of our season so far that we've got a couple of good results and then one which sets us back a bit. "We know we have to respond. It's a bad night for us all but we have to move on. "No-one likes to lose a derby game – they're big games and they're great to win, but when you lose it's not a great feeling. For the fans and for us, we have to win more and stay together." United face Aston Villa at home on Saturday before UEFA Champions League holders, and newly crowned Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich arrive on Tuesday for their quarter-final tie.

Kompany warns Man City title is not won yet

Posted: 26 Mar 2014 02:43 AM PDT

Tuesday's comfortable 3-0 victory atneighbours Manchester United saw City close the gap on leaders Chelsea to three points, with Manuel Pellegrini's men boasting two games in hand. However, Kompany insists the battle for the title is far from over and City must remain focused on the task in front of them. Pellegrini'scharges face Arsenal on Saturday and the Belgium defender expects another strong display to maintain their five-game unbeaten run in the league. "It's just one little step (beating United)," Kompany told Sky Sports after the victory. "The other teams are still very good. "I mean games have to be played. As long as we don't have the points, I don't consider ourselves there yet. "With the game against Arsenal, obviously it's good in a way, because you don't have to make a big effort to get the lads focused again."

Scholes: Arsenal million miles away from title

Posted: 25 Mar 2014 11:38 PM PDT

Speaking after Arsenal gave up a lead to draw 2-2 at home against Swansea, Scholes hit out at Mikel Arteta, Santi Cazorla, Tomas Rosicky and Mesut Ozil for lacking the commitment and work-rate to salvage victory from tough situations. Following on from their 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Chelsea, Arsenal's draw at the Emirates saw them drop to fourth, six points adrift of their London rivals, who sit top of the Premier League. "It's Arsenal fans I feel sorry for because it is the same every year," Scholes said on Sky Sports, where he was working as a pundit. "They get a sniff of the title then they go to Chelsea and do nothing. The fans expect Arsenal to be going for the league but they're a million miles away in my eyes. They need characters and leaders." Scholes said Arsenal will not win any trophies until they find leaders of the same calibre as former captains Patrick Viera and Tony Adams. "They (Arsenal) capitulated at Chelsea and it seems to be a similar theme that happens when they play the top teams. For one reason or another, players go missing," the 39-year-old said. "The players like Arteta, Cazorla, Rosicky and Ozil, it seems like they go on the pitch with no discipline. There are no leaders like Patrick Vieira, Tony Adams or Martin Keown. "When these players (Arteta, Cazorla et al) go 2-0 down they just carry on what they are doing they have a walk up front, lose the ball, play a nice little one-two and not even bother running back." Scholes added that the lack of leadership was allowing Arsenal's promising youngsters to stagnate with the former England international claiming midfielder Jack Wilshire had not improved since he broke into the London club's first team as a teenager in 2008. "Jack Wilshere came on the scene and looked a top young player but he has never really gone on," Scholes said. "He needs the characters like Vieira next to him to take him to the next level. He doesn't look any better player now than he did when he was 17."

Pellegrini lauds City defence in derby win

Posted: 25 Mar 2014 04:54 PM PDT

City's free-scoring ways have been well documented this term and a goal in each half from Edin Dzeko made the striker the fourth player in their ranks to reach 20 goals in all competitions. Yaya Toure lashed home a 90th-minute drive to complete a memorable night for the blue half of Manchester and register his 21st strike of a remarkable individual campaign. But Pellegrini made sure the efforts of his defence, who have now strung together five consecutive league clean sheets, did not go unnoticed. United struggled against a defence superbly marshalled by talismanic captain Vincent Kompany and the often-maligned Martin Demichelis. "I am very delighted because I think that we played very well, not only in attacking but also in defending," he said. "We were a very compact and aggressive team from the beginning. "I think that we are playing very well. Not only because we are scoring goals - in the last two games we scored eight goals - but also we have improved a lot in defending. "This is our fifth clean sheet in a row and at the end of the season it is very important to try not to concede goals. "That is why I am so happy about our performance today because against a very good team with important players we really didn't give any chances to score." City are now three points behind Chelsea with home matches against Sunderland and Aston Villa in hand on the league leaders. Pellegrini was aware of the lasting impact closing the gap with such a comprehensive win over the reigning champions might have on City's bid to bring the Premier League trophy back across town. "It was a good performance - I don't know if it was the best performance because we have played a lot of good games," he said. "It was important to do it today, here at Old Trafford, because it was one of the games in hand and the only one that we have to play away. So it was important to have three points more."

Moyes bemoans sluggish start in derby defeat

Posted: 25 Mar 2014 04:32 PM PDT

The Premier League title challengers drove at the reigning champions from kick-off and were rewarded by an Edin Dzeko opener within the first minute - the quickest goal United have ever conceded at home in the Premier League era. Moyes' men slowly regained their composure but it was a similar story after the break as Dzeko doubled his tally with United labouring 11 minutes into the second period. Yaya Toure thudded home his 21st goal of the season in the last minute but Moyes was more concerned with events that took place in the first half. "We never started well and never gave ourselves a great opportunity to get into the game," he said. "Man City started really fast and with us conceding a goal after 30 or 40 seconds it made it difficult. "We had to just try and make sure we got through that 10- or 15-minute period when they were out of the blocks. "I thought after that we weathered it and got ourselves back into the game, finished the half quite strong." Moyes' frustrations increased as Dzeko volleyed in from a Samir Nasri corner delivered in almost identical fashion to one that saw Fernandinho head over moments earlier. On both occasions, United's marking left a lot to be desired. "The key to it was not to lose a second goal so we could always give ourselves a chance of getting in there and, again, I didn't think we started the second half well," added Moyes. "I thought we brought pressure on us by our play and, in the end, I think we conceded a corner just before that (the second goal) - there was another one and it led to the goal. "It was obviously poor marking and we should have done much better." Reflecting further on a 10th league defeat this term, Moyes added: "We just never came out of the blocks - you prepare the players, you warm them up, you do all of the things to have them ready when they go out. "It's something you've got to be aware of, they've got to ready, and we'll try and achieve that the next to time to make sure it doesn't happen again."

Dzeko: Man City planned to hit United early

Posted: 25 Mar 2014 03:18 PM PDT

Dzeko scored with just 44 seconds on the clock - the quickest away goal at Old Trafford in Premier League history - after a last-ditch tackle thwarted David Silva and Samir Nasri's shot came back off the post. The Bosnian striker then ensured City would not pay for failing to press home a dominant first-half display when he caught United napping to volley home a Nasri corner shortly after the break. Yaya Toure applied gloss a to a fifth win in six league derbies for the blue half of Manchester, and the 3-0 triumph means Manuel Pellegrini's team are now three points behind table-toppers Chelsea with two games in hand. Dzeko told Sky Sports: "It was an amazing game from us from the first to the last minute. We were amazing. "We just wanted to start from the first minute to press them high and score an early goal which we did. "Then it was all about us. We scored another two in the second half so we have to be happy." And Dzeko, who became the fourth City player to bring up 20 goals this term, believes the team holding their collective nerve in a high-pressure fixture could prove pivotal in the final reckoning. "Before this game we had (played) three games less than Chelsea and this game was very important for us to keep (up) there," he added. "Now we are only three points behind and still two games less, so this game can be crucial at the end of the season."

Premier League: Man United 0 Man City 3

Posted: 25 Mar 2014 02:45 PM PDT

David Moyes' men were buoyed by impressive wins over Olympiacos and West Ham heading into the contest but City stung them instantly as Edin Dzeko scored inside a minute to register the fastest away goal at Old Trafford in Premier League history. United proceeded to stagger their way through the opening moments and rarely threatened to stop City extending their present dominance of the fixture to five wins from six league meetings, although Juan Mata might have levelled matters six minutes before the interval. Dzeko finished precisely 11 minutes into the second half to give City breathing space and Yaya Toure added a third in the 90th minute, the Ivorian's fourth goal in two games. Manuel Pellegrini's team are well-placed in the title race, three points behind leaders Chelsea with two games in hand ahead of Saturday's trip to Arsenal. It is a battle Moyes and champions United must watch from afar, having won just one of 11 matches against the six teams above them in the standings this term. Moyes selected a three-man central midfield in the hope of giving United a more robust feel but they suffered a nightmare start. City immediately drove into opposition territory and Rafael was forced into a superb last-ditch tackle to deny David Silva, but his positioning was found wanting as Fernandinho worked the ball back into the left side of the area for Samir Nasri. The playmaker thudded a strike against the base of the near post and Dzeko was on hand to tap home the rebound. United struggled badly to gain an early foothold and Silva should have increased their anxiety when he scuffed a ninth-minute shot against a prone Rio Ferdinand - starting in place of the suspended Nemanja Vidic at centre-back. Ferdinand appeared to be struggling with the pace of the game and carelessly played Silva onside in the 18th minute, leading to Dzeko drawing an excellent stop from David De Gea. Marouane Fellaini drove into Joe Hart's gloves but the former Everton midfielder was perhaps fortunate to remain on the field with half an hour played after pushing his elbow into Pablo Zabaleta's face. Referee Michael Oliver decided a yellow card was sufficient. United gradually worked their way into the half and Mata blasted over after Wayne Rooney's 39th-minute air-shot. Moyes sent on Shinji Kagawa for the ineffective Tom Cleverley at the start of the second half but City resumed on the front foot. Fernandinho could not adjust to convert Vincent Kompany's flick-on from Nasri's 52nd-minute corner and headed over. Yet United did not heed the warning and, when Nasri produced a similar delivery four minutes later, Dzeko coolly planted a side-foot volley beyond De Gea, ultimately sealing a ninth away league game unbeaten - a far cry from City's early-season troubles on the road. The frenetic pace of the game subsided and Hart remained severely under-worked, with the exception of a sharp 71st-minute stop that kept out an impudent flick from England colleague Danny Welbeck. A woeful evening for United was completed when a pass from substitute James Milner deflected into Toure's path, the midfielder driving home in trademark fashion.

Aguero: Most City fans want derby win over title

Posted: 25 Mar 2014 09:15 AM PDT

The Blues travel to Old Trafford on Tuesday six points behind Chelsea with three games in hand, and can ill-afford a slip-up if they are to usurp the Londoners. Aguero will play no part due to injury, but knows picking up all three points is paramount if City are to keep the destination of the title in their control. However, the former Atletico Madrid talisman feels most City fans would be content with Champions League qualification in exchange for six points from the red half. "For us, the three points are fundamental for the title race," says Aguero, speaking exclusively in the May 2014 issue of FourFourTwo. "As players, we want to win the league, and won't stop fighting until that's done, but for some fans the first thing they think about are the games against United. Derbies are always fantastic occasions for all involved. For the fans, these games are about a little bit more. A lot of people, I'd say 80-90 per cent, would be OK with us finishing fourth if we beat United." City, who snatched the Premier League title from their neighbours' grasp in the final seconds of the 2011/12 campaign, have won four of the previous five league meetings against United and seen the tables turned since last season's clash in M16. Aguero scored the winner at Old Trafford last April, but by then Sir Alex Ferguson's side were 15 points clear of Roberto Mancini's side on their way to title number 20. Now the Blues, revitalised under Manuel Pellegrini having scored 76 goals in 28 games, head to the Theatre of Dreams 12 points clear of their rivals and favourites to record a third straight win there for the first time in more than 40 years. And the 25-year-old wants to see his team-mates 'turn the whole sky blue' by inflicting a sixth league home defeat of the season on David Moyes' men. "From the two-and-a-bit years that I've been here, I'd say the city is now more Sky Blue than before!" says Aguero. "Obviously, there's still a game to go this season to turn the whole sky our colours!"

Schweinsteiger compares himself to Giggs, Totti

Posted: 25 Mar 2014 06:08 AM PDT

The Germany midfielder made his Bayern debut in 2002 and has not ruled out the possibility of remaining at the Allianz Arena until the end of his career. At 29,Schweinsteiger still has a long way to go until he can match the longevity demonstrated by Manchester United's Giggs, 40, and Roma's 37-year-old maestro Totti. Nonetheless, they are comparisons that he is comfortable in making. "Can I be compared to Francesco Totti or Ryan Giggs? Yes, absolutely," Schweinsteiger toldFrance Football. "They are two amazing players. At 40 years of age, Giggs is still going on playing at highest level. He is remarkable. "I am proud to have been at just one club. Were there any moments I was close to leaving? Yes, several times. But in the end the heart made the decision. "Will I terminate my career at Bayern? It is impossible to reply. "Here I am more than happy, but there could be surprises in the future. Moreover, I still have a few years to go on playing." Bayern are closing in on a 23rd Bundesligacrown and retain hope of becoming the first club to secure back-to-back UEFA Champions League crowns. Schweinsteiger has won six league titles with the club.
