Michel feeling sorry for under-fire Moyes Posted: 18 Mar 2014 05:45 PM PDT The Greek Super League champions hold a 2-0 lead heading to Old Trafford on Wednesday, when a Champions League quarter-final place will be on the line. Moyes' position at the helm has come under even greater scrutiny after his side's poor display in a 3-0 loss to Liverpool on Sunday left them seventh in the Premier League. Michel sympathises with the former Everton manager's position but said his team had a job to do. "David Moyes is not an enemy but we have opposite objectives," the Spaniard said. "I don't like seeing any manager suffering. "David Moyes is suffering as United manager. I have sympathy for all managers because I am one of them." Goals from Alejandro Dominguez and Joel Campbell helped Olympiacos into their commanding lead in the last 16 tie. Michel would love a similar result but expects to face a desperate United at Old Trafford, and said his team needed to do more than just try and protect their lead. "We would like the game to go the same way as the first leg but we know it will be a different United," he said. "(We expect) more determination and urgency on their behalf. We cannot just sit back protecting our 2-0 lead. "We know the situation at United but this has nothing to do with us. "All we have to do is play our game. We cannot rely on their difficulties. We must play to our advantages." Michel said his players had nothing to fear, with the Spaniard more nervous than his squad. "My players are not scared of anything. Maybe the manager is a bit more scared than the players," the 50-year-old said. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Kompany available to play in Manchester derby Posted: 18 Mar 2014 11:12 AM PDT The Manchester City captain was sent off just 10 minutes into Saturday's 2-0 Premier League win at Hull City for a professional foul on Nikica Jelavic. Kompany reacted to his dismissal at the KC Stadium with a gesture to the fourth official and then kicked a wall as he went down the tunnel to the dressing room as his frustration got the better of him. The FA have considered the Belgium captain's explanation for his actions following his red card and confirmed to Perform that they have opted to take no further action, so he will only sit out Saturday's top-flight clash with relegation-threatened Fulham. The influential centre-back will then be clear to return for City's crunch clash with champions United at Old Trafford next Tuesday as Manuel Pellegrini's men strive to stay in the title race. Hull forward George Boyd was earlier charged on Tuesday by the FA for allegedly spitting at City goalkeeper Joe Hart. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Moyes: My Man United future has not changed Posted: 18 Mar 2014 08:00 AM PDT Moyes' difficult first season as United manager reached a new low on Sunday when rivals Liverpool coasted to a 3-0 Premier League win at Old Trafford. That defeat piled more pressure on the former Everton boss, with the defending champions seventh in the table and looking almost certain to miss out on a place in next season's UEFA Champions League. United's fate in the competition this term rests on the second leg of their last 16 tie against Greek championsOlympiacos, who boast a two-goal advantage from the first meeting. Reacting to more questions about his future, Moyes insisted that he is the right man for the job and said he still has the backing of owners the Glazer family. The Scotsman said on Tuesday: "My future has not changed one bit. "The biggest assurance is they (the Glazers) let me get on with the job, we're making big plans for a long-term future, that's why it's a six-year contract. "This club is not one that works on a short-term vision, it works on a long-term vision." Old Trafford was a fortress for much of Alex Ferguson's reign, but United have suffered six home defeats in all competitions in Moyes' maiden campaign at the club. And the 50-year-old has urged his side to address that poor record, starting with Wednesday's crucial Champions League showdown. "Results at Old Trafford have been disappointing but it's not for want of trying." he added. "I've told the players we must start giving something back and performing." Henderson: Man United win just another game Posted: 18 Mar 2014 03:27 AM PDT Two penalties from captain Steven Gerrard and a Luis Suarez strike six minutes from time secured a comfortable victory for Liverpool at Old Trafford, and although the result sparked wild celebrations from the away fans, Henderson is already focusing on facing Cardiff City this weekend. The midfielder has become an integral part of Brendan Rodgers' side this season having started every Premier League game in their rise to second in the table. Henderson admitted that the result against their fierce rivals was a big boost, but he is keen to move on quickly and prepare for another tough Premier League clash against the struggling Welsh side on Saturday. "It was a big win (against United) but it was just another game for us really," he told the club's official website. "We went there trying to do the same thing, put on a good performance, get three points and thankfully we did that so we can move on to the next performance and hopefully win that. "We knew it was a massive game but we have been brilliant of late and we felt as though we were capable of doing what we have been doing all season and have a really good chance of winning the game. "We have just got to keep focused on what we are trying to do as a team and take each game as it comes, and not get too carried away. "That will start again against Cardiff and we will see where we are at the end of the season." Victory moved Liverpool to within four points of leaders Chelsea at the Premier League summit, with a game in hand on Jose Mourinho's side. Moyes fighting to save his job, claims Bosnich Posted: 18 Mar 2014 03:17 AM PDT United's 3-0 defeat to rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday increased the pressure on Moyes, with United now 12 points adrift of the Premier League top four and 18 behind leaders Chelsea. The reigning English champions face Olympiacos in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, having been beaten 2-0 in the first leg of their last 16 tie. Bosnich believes elimination from the competition could move Moyes closer to the exit. United then travel to West Ham on Saturday before hosting fierce rivals Manchester City on Tuesday, and Bosnich has suggested the outcome of the derby is likely to have huge significance. "David Moyes is a wonderful man but things have gone from bad to worse," he told talkSPORT. "They've got big problems. You can see it out on the pitch. "The two games (against Olympiacos and Manchester City) are huge. "The West Ham match will take care of itself, but the results against those two will determine whether David Moyes stays at the club. "If we see another two abject performances, especially in the derby, I don't think the board will have any choice but to appoint someone else."
