Nobody will have as big a job on his hands in the summer as David Moyes, with the Manchester United manager tasked with carrying out a rebuilding job of absolutely epic proportion, with United facing a possible mini-exodus of senior players, with Nemanja Vidic confirming he’ll leave Old Trafford at the end of the season.
Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra could follow the United captain out of the door, while Wayne Rooney’s future remains up in the air, given the United striker hasn’t yet signed the deal he had looked poised to commit to in the aftermath of Juan Mata’s arrival and Robin Van Persie could reconsider his position, were United to miss out on a Champions League place – which seems extremely likely. That leaves David Moyes with a huge task ahead of the summer, and reports today that the United manager’s first target could be PSG’s Edinson Cavani, who’s reportedly grown unsettled in Paris and whose agents were spotted in London over the last couple of days. The Uruguayan joined the French version of Manchester City last summer, arriving from Napoli for £54m but the usual “sources” claim that he’s grown disillusioned with life in France, as he’s been played in a wide role to accommodate Zlatan Ibrahimovic and has deemed the Ligue 1 not competitive enough. The striker has been linked with Arsenal and Chelsea before, while United were rumoured to be interested in Cavani at the beginning of the January transfer window, a rumour which, it seems, has rumbled on. The latest newspaper to jump on the “Cavani wants out” bandwagon is the Daily Mail – hardly a reputable source in terms of transfer gossip – that trots out all the usual details about the Uruguayan’s current situation, before stating that United could enter a bidding war with Chelsea for the Uruguayan. Even admitting the Mail have got things right, what are the chances of United outbidding Chelsea in the race for a striker for whom PSG are likely to want in the excess of £50m? Not to mention that Chelsea are desperate to sign a goalscorer, given Jose Mourinho has had enough of Demba Ba, Fernando Torres and Samuel Eto’o, while United’s frontline is the only area that doesn’t require immediate changes. Furthermore, with the World Cup looming large on the horizon, £50m could be better invested than on Cavani. |

Lately, the United captain’s influence has been limited by two serious knee injuries over the last three seasons, which reduced his physical impact and forced him to sit out long spells of United’s campaigns, with Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes wary of managing the Serbian’s fitness in order to get the best of out him.
Vidic’s recent injury record will have undoubtedly played a part in United’s decision to stall over a potential new deal for the 32-year-old, who has now accepted he’s no longer as prominent a figure in the manager’s plans as he had been under Sir Alex Ferguson and he’s ready to move on. “It’s the last year of my contract and I have had eight wonderful years here. My time at this great club will always rank as the best years of my career,” said Vidic, who has attracted interest from Fiorentina, Inter Milan and Juventus. “I never could have imagined winning 15 trophies and I will certainly never forget that fantastic night in Moscow [winning the Champions League], memories that will live with me and the fans forever. “However, I have decided that I will move on at the end of this season. I want to challenge myself again and try to make the best of myself in the coming years,” continued the 32-year-old. “I’m not considering staying in England as the only club I ever wanted to play for here is Manchester United and I was lucky enough to be part of this club for so many years. I’ve got a few options to move on and I will choose the right one for me and for my family. “I am now going to focus all my efforts on playing for Manchester United and do the best I can for the team until the end of the season.” With Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra also set to leave United in the summer, suddenly the rearguard becomes in need of a huge revamp, comparable to the one the central midfield has been waiting for for the last six years. Here’s hoping that it won’t take that long to find Vidic’s heir. Anybody looking forward to the summer? |
