Giggs: “Mata could be a legend”

ManUnited-v-Cardiff-3086859Ryan Giggs has described Juan Mata as a potential United legend, claiming that the 25-year-old Spanish has all it takes to establish himself at United and go down as one of the Old Trafford greats, fully justifying the club-record fee United splashed out to secure his services.

Mata arrived from Chelsea for £37.1m in the January transfer window, a transfer as unexpected as it was welcomed by players and fans alike, and Giggs believes the Spanish playmaker could be mentioned in the same bracket of Paul Scholes, Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham by the time he retires.

“I think he could be,” said Giggs when asked if Mata could become one of United’s best ever players. “He’s obviously got the talent. I don’t want to put too much pressure on him but I don’t see why not.”

The 40-year-old veteran admitted that Mata’s arrival provided a much-needed morale boost to the dressing room, albeit one that seemed incredibly short-lived given Saturday’s woeful performance against Stoke City.

“The players are just like the fans,’”Giggs said. “When they see a quality player come through the door, it gives them that excitement and you feel it around training. It gives everybody a lift.

“We’ve played against him for the last three years and know the quality he has got. He’s fitted in straight away and speaks really good English – better English than most of the lads!”

Mata moved to Old Trafford in order to play more regularly and cement a place in Spain World Cup’s squad and Giggs believes the Spaniard will make the plane to Brazil.

“Coming here will help him with regards to playing for Spain if he is playing week in and week out [for United],” said Giggs.

Meanwhile, Adnan Januzaj, who was yesterday named United Player of the Month, has spoken about his first season as first team player, but while he admitted to be pleased his form, he insisted that there’s a lot more to come from him.

“I am quite pleased with my year, I have done a lot of work and have been integrating into the first team,” said the Belgian youngster.

“I have played games and I think there is more to come. I hope to win trophies at this club and be the best player.”

The 18-year-old, arguably United’s only bright light this season, said he can learn a lot from having players like Mata at the club.

“He is a great player and I think I am going to learn a lot from him,” said Januzaj .

“He is a technical player who is very clever. He scores goals and gives assists. We are very happy to have Mata at the club.

“I think he has settled in and he is happy and I hope he will be happy at the club.”
