Pardew eager to finish above champions United

Pardews men have been in dismal form of late, suffering consecutive 3-0 defeats to Sunderland and Chelsea. Newcastle have not scored in six of their last seven Premier League matches, but still sit inside the top eight on 37 points, four adrift of David Moyes seventh-placed side. Moyes men were held to a 2-2 home draw by bottom clubFulham on Sunday, a result that boosted Pardews spirits ahead of the visit of Tottenham on Wednesday And Pardew is hopeful Newcastle can return to winning ways with a victory over Tim Sherwoods team, who have not won a league game at St James Park since 2004. You are never safe from relegation, in my opinion, until you have 40 points in the bag, so we are not safe, Pardew said. But theres always an incentive in football, always. Your professional pride is the minimum. But the result at Manchester United (on Sunday) was a result that cheered me up because if gives us a chance to try to catch them, and if we try to finish above Manchester United, that would be a hell of an achievement for this club regardless of anything else. Thats the immediate incentive for us, and then we will see where it takes us.

Fulham draw tough to take for Carrick

Posted: 10 Feb 2014 12:32 AM PST

The England international looked to have handed the reigning Premier League champions all three points at Old Trafford with a deflected strike 10 minutes from time, shortly after Robin van Persie had cancelled out Steve Sidwell'sfirst-half opener. There was to be a dramatic injury-time twist, however, as Darren Bent headed home a 94th-minute leveller for rock-bottom Fulham. United dominated possession and had 31 shots on goal, leavingCarrickat a loss to explain how David Moyes' men only gained a point. "It's a tough one to take, it's hard to explain how we've only come away with a point," he told the club's official website. "It was an incredible game, so one-sided. "We played well for most of the game, we created opportunities but just couldn't score. When we finally got in front, we should have extended the lead with the chances we had, so it's tough to take after being hit like that at the end. "We certainly had chances to do it (go further ahead), but even so, we were so in control that letting it slip like that is criminal. "I haven't been involved in a game like that in my career. It's so frustrating because we should have scored more. We're very disappointed to concede twice, considering the amount of time they spent in our half, never mind our box." The draw leaves United's hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League via their league position in jeopardy as the club currently sit seventh, nine points of adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool. United head to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal on Wednesday, with Arsene Wenger's men looking to quickly eradicate memories of Saturday's 5-1 humiliation at Anfield. But Carrick is looking for United to bounce back quickly and inflict more misery on Arsenal. He added: "We'll be ready (for Arsenal). We'll pick ourselves up and get back to training in the morning. It's one of those seasons - setback after setback - and we have just got to pick ourselves up. "We have to believe that with performances, things are going to change. There's no better place to do that than on Wednesday night at Arsenal, and we still believe that we can go there and get the result we want."

Meulensteen: Man United draw gives us a base

Posted: 10 Feb 2014 12:01 AM PST

Head coach Meulensteen saw Fulham, who sit bottom of the Premier League, lead for much of the game at Old Trafford through Steve Sidwell's 19th-minute volley. Late goals from Robin van Persie and Michael Carrick looked to have rewarded United for their dominance of possession and territory. Yet Fulham hit back in sensational fashion, equalising in the fourth minute of injury time through Darren Bent to secure an unlikely point. Meulensteen's men host in-form Liverpool on Wednesday, but can now approach that daunting fixture with renewed belief. "We have got a massive one ahead of us. But hopefully this gives us a good base to kick on," said Meulensteen. "That's why these players want to play in the Premier League - for these sort of games. "It's the most exciting league. If you have to come up to the big boys, you have to elevate yourself. You have to step up for it. "Everybody, no matter where you are in the Premier League, you have got a challenge to play for." Centre-half Dan Burn shone against United, making a succession of clearances as United peppered Fulham with crosses. "Since we brought Dan Burn back from his Birmingham loan spell, he's done ever so well," Meulensteen added, before explaining his decision to include the 21-year-old along with fellow youngsters Muamer Tankovic and Ryan Tunnicliffe. "It's important in the Premier League, if you want to be successful, you need energy and quality. "That's why we chose some of the younger lads because you know it's a big pitch, big distances to cover. "Their (United's) game plan was quite straightforward. It was get it wide, get it in. We defended it well. "If you're well organised and the goalkeeper is in good positions, then it can be easy. You need creativity, variety to open them (opposition teams) up."
