United laughing at officials, Moyes says

United laughing at officials, Moyes says

The Scot saw his side fall to defeat in Tuesday'ssemi-final first leg at the Stadium of Light, despite naming a strong side for the encounter. United looked to have claimed a draw when Nemanja Vidic's second-half header cancelled out Ryan Giggs' own goal in the opening period. Sunderland, however, restored their lead throughFabio Borini's thunderous penalty after Adam Johnson had tumbled in the area under a challenge from Tom Cleverley. The visitors piled on the pressure in the closing stages, butGus Poyet's menstood firm to make it three defeats in a row in all competitions for United. Moyes was incensed after the final whistle, believing there had been no foul on Steven Fletcher for the free-kick that led to the opening goal, while also questioning referee Andre Marriner's penalty decision. And the former Everton manager feels United are competing against both their opponents and match officials at present. "I thought the referee was going to blow in our direction for the first goal," he told Sky Sports."I couldn't believe he gave a free-kick. It was a terrible decision." On the penalty call, he added: "We are all just laughing at them (officials) at the minute. We get a player booked for doing the same thing (going down easily). "It looks as though we are having to play them (officials) as well as the opposition at the moment." United can still reach the final if they can overcome the deficit in the return leg at Old Trafford on January 22 - and Moyes is relishing the challenge. "It is difficult we just need to keep going. We didn't do a lot wrong,"he continued. "I thought the players, our crowd were unbelievable, the players deserved to get a result. "It's a two-legged game and I am really looking forward to the second leg."

Poyet hails Johnsons contribution in semi

Posted: 07 Jan 2014 02:26 PM PST

The 26-year-old came on as a substitute for Emanuele Giaccherini and put in a lively performance at the Stadium of Light, including drawing the foul for the penalty that Fabio Borini smashed home to hand Sunderlanda slendersemi-final first-leg advantage. Sunderland moved ahead in first-half injury time when Ryan Giggsscored at the wrong end while attempting to clear Wes Brown's cut-back. United equalised shortly afterthe breakwhen Nemanja Vidic rose highest to head Adnan Januzaj's corner firmly beyond Vito Mannone, but the home sidewere not to be denied as Johnson was fouled in the box by Tom Cleverley, allowing Borini tosnatch thewin from 12 yards. Poyet's men had to withstand heavy pressure in the final 15 minutes, but they stood firmto record the club's first victory over United since a 2-1 League Cuptriumph in November 2000. Andthe Uruguayanhailed Johnson's influence, tellingSky Sports News:"He made my day because we were desperate for him to do well. "We couldn't find the right space and the right time until Adam came in and changed it." Sunderland's run in the competition has proved a welcome distraction from their poor Premier League form, which has seen them slip to the bottom of the table. They beat Chelsea in the quarter-finals to set up their tie with United, and Poyet admitshis side performing well against the big teams in the League Cup while failing to beat fellow strugglers in the league is an unusual situation. He added: "It's something very strange but with the way we are playing maybe, it is suited to playing against the big teams. It was a a very tight game, and sometimes a decision goes for you and you win the game. "We need to change something (if we are to improve against teams at the bottom)." The return leg takes place at Old Trafford on January 22, and Poyet realises there is still a huge challenge ahead to reach the final at Wembley. "We know it's not easy to beat Manchester United but now we go to Old Trafford with a lead. It's been a long time since we were in a final so we will try our best," he added.

League Cup: Sunderland 2 Man United 1

Posted: 07 Jan 2014 01:38 PM PST

The Italian - who also notched in the quarter-final victory over Chelsea - kept his composure in front of an expectant Stadium of Light crowd to ensure Gus Poyet's men travel to Old Trafford for the second leg with a slender advantage while also piling further misery on under-pressure United manager David Moyes. In a tepid opening period, it was Sunderland who managed to find the breakthrough in first-half injury time when Wes Brown knocked Sebastian Larsson's free-kick across the six-yard box and Ryan Giggs inadvertently applied the final touch from close range. United responded shortly after the interval when Nemanja Vidic, who has been linked with a move away from the Premier League champions, headed home a corner from the impressive Adnan Januzaj. But, after substitute Adam Johnson was brought down in the box by Tom Cleverley on 65 minutes, Liverpool loanee Borini kept his cool to fire past David de Ge and leave the tie delicately poised ahead of the return fixture on January 22. Both teams made seven changes, with Marcos Alonso making his debut for Sunderland while United named a strong line-up that included Patrice Evra, Michael Carrick and Vidic. The hosts enjoyed the majority of possession in the opening exchanges and had the first glimpse of goal on 12 minutes with Borini's scuffed effort. United began to settle into the match with Januzaj looking particularly threatening, and Moyes' side went agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock when Giggs' deflected strike rattled the crossbar after 25 minutes. The visitors also thought their pressure had told on 38 minutes when Januzaj fired home after initially striking against Giggs, but the linesman ruled the latter was offside when he blocked the ball. And United's failure to take their chances counted against them on the stroke of half-time as Brown's cut-back across goal found its way home via Giggs, who was sliding in to challenge former United team-mate Phil Bardsley. It did not take long for United to restore parity after the break, however, as Vidic leapt highest to head home Januzaj's whipped corner on 51 minutes. Sunderland came close to regaining the lead on 62 minutes when Larsson's volley was parried to safety by De Gea. Three minutes later, Poyet's side did move ahead when Johnson - who had replaced Emanuele Giaccherini from the bench - was felled by Cleverley in the area and Borini blasted the resulting penalty into the roof of the net. With 20 minutes remaining, the lively Januzaj almost levelled with a bending effort that curled wide of Mannone's far post. United piled on the pressure in the closing stages with Januzaj twice coming close and Evra's effort just evading the far post, but Sunderland withstood the barrage to ensure they will take a lead to Old Trafford.

Vidic agent not expecting contract extension

Posted: 07 Jan 2014 07:24 AM PST

The 32-year-olds Old Trafford deal expires at the end of the season, and he has yet to be offered a new one. Vidic hasmanaged 17 appearances so far this season, having been restricted to 23 and 11 in each of the last two seasons due to injuries. Theformer Spartak Moscow mansagent Silvano Martina is confident thathis clientwillhave no shortage of options, but is seemingly resigned to seeing him depart the Premier League champions. Vidic is a very good player and will have no trouble finding a new club, he told Radio CRC. For the time being we are remaining calm. However, at the moment, I would rule out an extension with Manchester United. Napoli have been linked with a January move for Vidic and, while Martina revealed an approach fromthe Serie A clubhad not been made, he is impressed by the elevated reputation theStadio San Paolo outfithave forged for themselves in recent years. Vidic, given his contract situation, has several teams looking at him, Martina added. Napoli? At the moment there has been no contact. Thanks to the management of (president Aurelio) De Laurentiis and (sporting director Riccardo) Bigon, they are one of the best clubs in Europe.

Pulis: Zaha not keen on Palace loan return

Posted: 07 Jan 2014 02:58 AM PST

Zaha – who joined the Premier League champions from Palace last January for a reported £10 million fee, rising to £15 million pending add-ons – was initially loaned back to the Selhurst Park outfit until the end of last term. And with the 21-year-old having made just two Premier League appearances for United this season, a loan switch back to Palace has been mooted. But while Zaha appears set to move out temporarily, it will not be to Palace, with Pulis confirming that the player is not interested in returning to London. "We've spoken to (United boss) David Moyes about Zaha and I don't think he's too keen on him coming back to London," Pulis told talkSPORT. "It's not a problem for us, he's a Manchester United player. "We don't think it's a goer, although we were very keen if there was a possibility to take him on." Pulis remains confident that he will still be able to bring in other attacking reinforcements during the January transfer window as he looks to bolster his squad. "There are irons in other fires and we're working hard to bring other players in," he added. "It's what we need to do. I said when I came here that this window was important. "If we can have a good window, that gives us a better opportunity of staying up."

Lindegaard happy to play second fiddle

Posted: 07 Jan 2014 01:10 AM PST

Lindegaard started Sunday's 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Swansea City, United's fourth home loss from their last six Old Trafford fixtures. The Denmark international was making only his second appearance of the season, but even though the January transfer window is open, the 29-year-old is happy at his boyhood club. "If I see it through my own eyes I would say 'Jesus Christ I am not playing, why is that', then it would be easy to get frustrated," Lindegaard said. "I have to try and be objective, and raise myself up above just myself and see it from the club's perspective and how much pressure we have been under. "Then it is easier for me to understand why things are the way they are. For me it is all about being a happy human being. I am now at Manchester United. It is my club since I was a small kid. This is my dream. "The question is do I have to compromise that dream and seek elsewhere. Right now the decision is to stay here and help the club. That is the most important thing. "If I was sitting watching the games on the couch I would be very disappointed. That is how it is. It is both a praise and a curse. "You have to remember how lucky you are. How many football players can say they are part of their biggest dream? "I am not stupid. I can see I could use some more games somewhere but right now I am helping this club as much as I can." Despite United's disappointing start to the season – which sees them seventh in the table – Lindegaard sressed that they must continue to target the Premier League title. "Manchester United is not going to realign if what you mean by that is start to look lower. That is not going to happen at Manchester United," he added. "Look at the history of this club. It is the most successful club in English football. That is not going to change. It is how it is. It is in the genes of the club and is going to continue. "We are in the middle of the transition. I am sure when the transition is fulfilled we will be as successful as we have ever been."
