OShea: Lets forget Man United cup success Posted: 08 Jan 2014 09:37 AM PST Gus Poyet's side beat the Premier League champions 2-1 at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday in the first leg of their cup semi-final. And while that tie is a long way from over – something O'Shea knows better than most, given his 12-year stint at United – the 32-year-old defender has asked his side to switch their attention to their league meeting at Fulham on Saturday. Sunderland sit on the bottom of the Premier League table but could close to within a point of safety if they win and other results go their way. "We just put this game to the side now for a few weeks because believe me, it's far from over," O'Shea said. "We have got a huge game against Fulham now. "We know that if we create and play like we can do in those games we will be creating chances and we will be hurting teams. If we keep that belief, that's when we will get the wins. "We drew 0-0 at West Ham but should have won the game; at Villa we should have won the game, so you are thinking, 'Okay, if we are keeping the clean sheets, eventually the goals will have to come for us because we are getting ourselves into such good positions'. "It's a team game and maybe for a certain amount of time, we are thinking too individually about helping the team, in a good way as in, 'I'll be the one to help out'. But it's got to be that collective if the team is going to be successful." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
FA investigate Moyes comments on officials Posted: 08 Jan 2014 05:10 AM PST The United boss could be in hot water with the governing body after turning his ire on the officials following United's loss in the first leg of their semi-final against Gus Poyet's side at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday night. Moyes was not impressed with referee Andre Marriner's decision to award a penalty, which was converted by Fabio Borini, for a challenge by Tom Cleverley on Adam Johnson. When contacted by Perform on Wednesday, the FA confirmed they are looking into the former Everton manager's comments and they will also contact both clubs before deciding whether to act after flares were lit by United fans. Moyes is under pressure in his first season at Old Trafford, with United seventh in the Premier League and out of the FA Cup following their defeat to Swansea City on Sunday. But he claimed the Premier League champions have been on the wrong end of some poor decisions. "I feel we are having to play the opposition and the officials," said Moyes after United's latest defeat. "They gave a free-kick on the first goal that I couldn't believe. Maybe I have got to understand that's what happens at Manchester United - they are certainly not giving us much at this moment in time. "For the penalty, the linesman gives it, but he can't see through Patrice Evra. The referee is looking right at it and is in a very good position - not too close, not too far away, but he turns around. The linesman gives it. "I just think it is incredible when you think we didn't get one the other week for the (Hugo Lloris) challenge against Tottenham. It's hard to take, it really is." Moyes not affected by Ferguson presence Posted: 08 Jan 2014 01:33 AM PST Moyes has endured a difficult start to his United tenure after being charged with the task of replacing the legendary Scotsman. United look unlikely to retain their Premier League title, as they sit seventh in the table, and crashed out of the FA Cup with a home defeat against Swansea City on Sunday. Moyes' woes continued when his side suffered a 2-1 first-leg defeat at Sunderland in the semi-final of the League Cup on Tuesday night. Ferguson is on the board at Old Trafford and attends home matches along with United's record goalscorer and fellow director Bobby Charlton. The pair were pictured alongside club ambassador Bryan Robson, a former captain and another club great, at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday as United crashed to a third consecutive defeat. But Moyes has denied that the presence of United legends is preventing him from taking the club forward. He said: "Not at all, I can only see Alex as a great sounding board for me, he's there to help so is Sir Bobby, he's terrific, Bryan Robson is at the training ground regular, speak to him at the training ground, I find the three of them terrific." A defiant Moyes is confident the tide will turn at Old Trafford despite seeing his hopes of securing silverware in his debut season at United take a huge blow in the space of three days. He said: "I've been here before, done it before, experienced, and I just sense that it's just on its verge of turning, we're about to get a bit better. "If you're going to be in this job, you've got to win, last few games I've not won, going through a difficult time, it's part of football management, it's never going to be an easy ride." Martinez: Everton players going nowhere Posted: 07 Jan 2014 09:45 PM PST The Goodison Park outfit have impressed in their first season under the former Wigan boss, chalking up 38 points to sit in fifth spot ahead of the likes of Tottenham and Manchester United. But Martinez said Everton, who lost Marouane Fellaini and manager David Moyes to United in the off-season, will not be weakened in January despite the likes of Leighton Baines and Ross Barkley attracting interest around the Premier League. "We've attracted a lot of attention with the performances of our players but I can tell everybody that you can be very, very assured that we are not going to lose any of the top performers that we have this season," Martinez said. "That for me is the priority - not to lose any of the dynamics." Martinez also hinted any Everton activity at the transfer table would be minimal, if any. "Maybe we'll bring one, two very specific players that are going to help the ones we have," the Spaniard added. The reason why Martinez is not looking to bolster or offload is that he feels the balance in his side is just right as it is. "I don't think there are many teams in the world who have that good, raw talent and good senior pros ready to make the football club proud," he said. "I still think we are one of the unique football clubs around world football, being able to maintain the tradition, being able to have that history behind us and now I'm really, really excited when I look the dressing room that we have. "I am hoping we can fulfil the potential we have, that's exactly what Everton needs in the second half of the season." Everton's next league encounter is a home clash with Norwich City on Saturday. |
