Moyes needs trophy triumph, says Stepney

Stepney, who played for United between 1966-1978, described his former side's home form as their main downfall this term. United have lost four Premier League matches at Old Trafford and suffered a 2-1 loss to Swansea City in the FA Cup third round on Sunday. Stepney ruled United out of the title race in December and has not changed his mind since, with Moyes' men in seventh - 11 points off leaders Arsenal. While they may give up their top-flight crown this season, United are into the League Cup semi-finals and play Olympiacos in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League. "To win the title you've got to win your home games," Stepney told Perform. "We've lost four games here at Old Trafford this season. "The thing is we've got to keep going. If we can go on a run who knows but we have to beat the teams that are top when we play them and we've still got to play them. "At the beginning of every season you start off (trying to) win four trophies, that what it is and there's 20 Premiership teams and there's only four trophies available, and only three for some. "To come away with one trophy is a fantastic achievement especially for David Moyes. It would be great for him if we can win that and also qualify for Europe but that's possibly his biggest aim."

Buttner dismisses Man United exit talk

Posted: 06 Jan 2014 12:45 PM PST

Left-back Buttner has yet to establish himself in the United first team, although he did feature in their 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Swansea City on Sunday. David Moyes men have been linked with moves for left-backs Leighton Baines and Luke Shaw as the Scot looks to bolster his squad following a disappointing first half of the season that has left the defending Premier League champions 11 points behind leaders Arsenal. Still, Buttner has been unaffected by the speculation and has no desire to leave Old Trafford. If people talk about other players in my position, I dont care, he told the clubs official website. I just want to play my game and show that I can handle the level. I know there are some clubs that want me but Im happy here and want to play for United so I focus 100 per cent on here. I dont want to leave. I want to fight for my place. I am still young and I know what I can do. I just have to wait for my chances and take them. Buttner expressed disappointment at Uniteds third-round cup exit, but was satisfied with his individual performance. I think we did some things well but its difficult to play with 10 men, he added. Im disappointed and we have to focus on the next game now. It was nice to play and I want to play every game. It was good for my first game for a while. Im just disappointed we lost because, if we win, then the feeling is different. Im very disappointed but I think I did well.

Moyes expresses doubts over January signings

Posted: 06 Jan 2014 02:04 AM PST

Wilfried Bonys 90th-minute header condemned 10-man United to a 2-1 FA Cup third-round defeat to Swansea City at Old Trafford on Sunday - a loss that marked their fifth at home in all competitions under Moyes stewardship. Defending Premier League champions United are 11 points behind leaders Arsenal in seventh place and face a trip to face Sunderland in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final on Tuesday. And, while Moyes recognises the need for new recruits to ignite his sides fading title defence, the Scot is far from hopeful of adding to his squad this month. Theres an urgency that wed like to bring people in, he said. But are those players available in January? Theres no point me hyping it up and saying we are (going to add to the squad) because the players we would like to bring are probably not going to be available in January. Not because we dont want to do it but because they are not available. After two consecutive defeats, Moyes is eager to turn around what has been a disappointing start to life in his first season at Old Trafford. We put out a really strong team today (Sunday) with lots of international players so everybody is getting their opportunity to show what they can do, he added. Hopefully then Ill make my decision from that. The way we are, we need to win so we have to make sure we find a solution to win. Part of this job is to find a way of winning so it doesnt matter what style, whatever you do, you have to find a way of winning. Thats what we have to try and do.
