Pardew expecting Man United reaction Posted: 05 Dec 2013 07:44 AM PST David Moyes' men were beaten 1-0 at home on Wednesday, as the former Everton boss tasted defeat against his old club. The loss leaves United in ninth place and, while Pardew dismissed talk of a crisis at the defending champions, he is expecting Moyes' charges to respond strongly. "Every game is up for grabs this year and I think there'll be a reaction from Man United to their defeat and likewise from us," he said, having seen his own side beaten 3-0 by Swansea City in midweek. "It'll make for a game that is quite pressurised and therefore we need to have calm heads in that game and hopefully we can retain the ball better than we did at Swansea. "They (United) had gone 12 games unbeaten up until that game so it's not like there is a crisis there. They've lost a game, which anybody can do in the Premiership at the moment. "Their reaction is going to be a little bit larger than ours." Pardew will be eager for his side to become more consistent on their travels, having lost four and won three of the last seven away games in the top flight. He believes Newcastle need to play on any pressure that the hosts come under at Old Trafford if they are to record their first win there against Manchester United since February 1972. "There'll be a bit of pressure on them and we've got try capitalise on that and make it difficult for them," Pardew added. "If we can do that and get in the last period of the game and we could try and reverse a statistic that is Newcastle winning at Manchester United." Hatem Ben Arfa could return after illness, while Papiss Cisse is a doubt with a heel injury. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Premier League Preview: Man United vs Newcastle Posted: 05 Dec 2013 05:59 AM PST David Moyes' side welcome Newcastle to Old Trafford on Saturday having not lost to the Tyneside club on home soil since February 1972. That stat provides a rare chink of light for the Scot in a campaign that has seen United struggle for form at home, with the champions winning only three of their seven fixtures and scoring just eight goals. A 1-0 reverse to former club Everton - which leaves United ninth in the Premier League - will have done little to appease any restless United supporters, as Roberto Martinez matched Moyes' 11-year points haul from Old Trafford as the Merseysiders' boss in just one game. Ryan Giggs has urged his team-mates to forget the blip, and get back to the form that recently saw them go unbeaten for two months. "It's a quick turnaround, but we've got to pick ourselves up," Giggs told MUTV. "We cannot feel sorry for ourselves for too long. "It's (Newcastle) a home game and hopefully it will be a different result. "We need to get on a run, before this we were on a 12-game unbeaten run. We have to get over this disappointment now." Michael Carrick (Achilles) remains unavailable for the visit of his hometown club, but Moyes' most pressing concern will be in attack - with Wayne Rooney suspended after picking up a fifth booking of the season against Everton. Robin van Persie has not featured in a matchday squad since United's 1-0 win over Arsenal on November 10 due to persistent groin and toe injuries, and the Dutchman's return date remains unknown. Having won four consecutive games in November, Alan Pardew's men were hammered 3-0 by Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Wednesday, tempering thoughts of a finish in the European places. Their away form has ran in perfect sequence of defeats following wins so far this term, possibly providing scant optimism to some Newcastle fans. The form of Loic Remy and Yoan Gouffran was crucial to Newcastle's November revival, with the French pair each netting three goals in the four outings. In three games against United, however, Remy has failed to score, while in-favour strike partner Shola Ameobi has faced the champions 15 times and emerged on the winning side only once. Ameobi is likely to continue in attack regardless, with Papiss Cisse having missed the Swansea game after picking up a heel injury in the warm-up. Hatem Ben Arfa's involvement is also in doubt he missed the trip to Wales through illness. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Wenger: Too early to dismiss United challenge Posted: 05 Dec 2013 03:18 AM PST David Moyes men were beaten 1-0 at home by Everton on Wednesday and sit ninth in the table after their fourth league defeat of the season. The loss also leaves the champions 12 points off leaders Arsenal, who beat Hull City 2-0 to extend their winning run in the top flight to three matches. Despite the distance between the sides, Wenger is not discounting United just yet. Its still early. It is a surprising defeat (to Everton) but it is still early, he explained. We have just to keep winning to have a chance, and not worry too much about the others. Jack Wilshere, Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott all started Wednesdays win on the bench, while Nicklas Bendtner took advantage of a rare start to score his first goal of the season. Wenger explained the need to rotate his side ahead of a run of fixtures in quick succession. Now we play Everton on Sunday, there is little distance between Everton and (the UEFA Champions League game against Napoli), he explained. We play Wednesday night in Naples and Saturday morning at Man City, so for us it is a very, very heavy schedule. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Moyes unsure over Van Persie return date Posted: 05 Dec 2013 01:13 AM PST Van Persie has not featured for the Premier League champions since scoring in the 1-0 win over former club Arsenal at Old Trafford on November 10 due to a groin strain. Moyes confirmed there is no return date set for the Netherlands international but explained the injury was not a cause for major concern. "I don't know (when Robin will return). We've been trying to get him back for a few weeks," the Scot said. "But he is not ready yet. It's his groin. It's a sore groin injury and nothing desperately serious." Van Persie's fellow striker Wayne Rooney will also miss Satuday's visit of Newcastle United having collected his fifth booking of the season during Wednesday's loss to Everton. That capped off a tough night for Moyes, who tasted defeat against the club he left to join United in the close-season. "I'm disappointed to lose, we missed some opportunities and Everton took theirs. It's a sore one against your old team," he added. "We have a long way to go, we will need to play some great football and win an awful lot of games." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
