Meulensteen joins Jol at Fulham as head coach Posted: 13 Nov 2013 06:25 AM PST Jol has come under pressure in the Craven Cottage hot seat, with a poor start to the season leaving them 18th in the Premier League. New Fulham owner Shahid Khan has professed his commitment to the former Tottenham boss, insisting he will not rush into a hasty decision. Meulensteen had been linked with the vacant manager's job at Crystal Palace, as well as a senior role at the Qatar Football Club, but the former Manchester United man has instead moved to London. The 49-year-old departed Old Trafford after Alex Ferguson's retirement, linking up with Guus Hiddink at Anzhi Makhachkala and eventually replacing his compatriot as head coach a fortnight later. However, his spell in charge of the Dagestan outfit was ended after 16 days, as owner Suleyman Kerimov instigated sweeping budget cuts. "I was impressed by the vision of Shahid Khan and (chief executive) Alistair Mackintosh," Meulensteen said. "I've spent many hours talking with Martin Jol and we share a vision of how football should be played and how players should be developed. It's our job to make sure we can bring this vision to life on the pitch for the fans." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Carrick ruled out for up to six weeks Posted: 13 Nov 2013 02:36 AM PST The 32-year-old midfielder withdrew from the England squad for the forthcoming friendlies against Chile and Germany on Tuesday and his club have now revealed that he will be sidelined until December. "Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick will be out for four to six weeks with an Achilles injury," a statement on the club's website read. Carrick played the full 90 minutes of United's 1-0 Premier League win over Arsenal on Sunday, but revealed afterwards that he has been suffering with the complaint for some time. The former Tottenham man, who has made 333 appearances for United since moving from White Hart Lane in 2006, has featured in 15 of his side's first 18 games in all competitions this season. However, he will now miss United's upcoming clashes with Cardiff City, Bayer Leverkusen, Tottenham, Everton and Newcastle United, before potentially returning for their final UEFA Champions League group match against Shakhtar Donetsk on December 10. Meulensteen becomes favourite for Palace job Posted: 12 Nov 2013 05:53 PM PST The Dutchman, 49, is favourite for the vacant full-time role at the English Premier League club, with Aitor Karanka to be announced as Middlesbrough manager on Wednesday. Meulensteen, formerly head coach of Brondby and Anzhi Makhachkala, had three spells at Old Trafford as a youth, reserves and first-team coach. He had been expected to head to the Qatar Football Association as a technical director but his agent Fons Van den Brande said Meulensteen was negotiating elsewhere. "There is a lot going on, that's all I can say, but I can confirm that he definitely will not be going to Qatar," Van den Brande told The Independent. "I have orders to say nothing else. There are a lot of negotiations going on at this moment so we will have to see what happens in the next few days." Keith Millen is in charge at struggling Palace, who are bottom of the Premier League, as caretaker, after Ian Holloway resigned in October. |
