Carrick and Welbeck out of England squad

Posted: 12 Nov 2013 06:50 AM PST

Carrick has been suffering with an Achilles injury, although he did play the full 90 minutes of his side's Premier League victory over Arsenal on Sunday. His Manchester United team-mate Welbeck has been ruled out with a knee problem, having failed to feature for his club since October 19. "Danny Welbeck and Michael Carrick have both withdrawn from the England squad due to injury," the FA said in a statement on their website. "The Manchester United duo featured in last month's World Cup qualifier against Poland, but are ruled out as Roy Hodgson's men gather for two games at Wembley Stadium." No replacements have been called up to Hodgson's squad for the fixtures against Chile on Friday and Germany on Tuesday.

Van Persie withdraws from Netherlands squad

Posted: 12 Nov 2013 04:02 AM PST

The 30-year-old was taken off with five minutes remaining as United defeated Premier League leaders Arsenal 1-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday, after putting David Moyes' men ahead with a first-half header. Van Persie has been plagued by the issue in the early stages of the season, and missed United's 1-0 home victory over Real Sociedad in the UEFA Champions League on October 23. He will now sit out the Netherlands friendly encounters with Japan on Saturday, before their showdown with Colombia on Tuesday. Van Persie - who captains the national side - became his country's record goalscorer when a hat-trick over Hungary in October took him to 41 goals, beating Patrick Kluivert's previous total of 40. The former Arsenal man has seven Premier League goals to his name from 10 appearances this season. Feyenoord midfielder Jordy Clasie will also be unavailable for Louis van Gaal's side with a foot problem. To cover the injuries the Netherlands have called up Norwich City midfielder Leroy Fer and Vitesse's Davy Propper, with the latter in line to make his debut. Van Gaal may take the opportunity to rotate his squad as he looks to settle on a regular starting XI ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil next year.

Dortmund confirm Reus release clause

Posted: 12 Nov 2013 02:13 AM PST

The Germany international made the switch to Jurgen Klopp's outfit on a five-year deal in July 2012, after the club agreed a fee reported to be in the region of €17.1 million with Borussia Monchengladbach. Reus has quickly developed into a pivotal player for Dortmund and the 24-year-old boasts seven goals in 12 Bundesliga appearances this season. His impressive form has led to rumours of a move to the Premier League, with Manchester United or Arsenal, or Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain. Dortmund executive Hans-Joachim Watzke has now confirmed there is a release clause in Reus' contract, with reports suggesting the figure is approximately €35 million. "Marco Reus possesses a release clause option in his current contract at our club," Watzke told SPORT1media."He could leave our club due to that. "He is, however, the only player in our first-team squad that has such a contract clause." Dortmund's hopes of reclaiming the Bundesliga title from rivals Bayern Munich were damaged by a 2-1 defeat at Wolfsburg on Saturday, which put them four points adrift of Pep Guardiola's table-toppers. A 1-0 setback at home to Arsenal has also left Dortmund's UEFA Champions League hopes in the balance. They trail Arsene Wenger's men and second-placed Napoli by three points with two Group F fixtures remaining.

Gerrard shrugs off Ferguson comments

Posted: 12 Nov 2013 02:00 AM PST

The former Manchester United manager made the comments in his autobiography, but Liverpool midfielder Gerrard refuses to let it bother him and has claimed the Scot eventried to take him to Old Trafford on more than one occasion. "Listen, he's entitled to his opinion," the midfielder told the Daily Mail. "I'm a fan of his; he is one of the best managers in the world. "I won't lose any sleep over it. Throughout my career I have had praise from all types of people - including him - and I am not vain enough to take it all. "I have had some unbelievable praise from him and he tried to buy me, certainly on one occasion. Maybe even two. "For me, the most important thing is what (Liverpool manager) Brendan Rodgers and (England manager) Roy Hodgson are thinking. I think they are really pleased with me and that is all I will worry about." Gerrard, who is twoappearances away from overtaking Bobby Moore in becoming his country's thirdmost-capped player, admits his international focus is not on securing as many caps as possible, but leading England to success in a major tournament. He continued: "107 caps isn't bad for someone who isn't "a top, top player", is it? I never expected to get that amount of caps. "When I made my debut, I set myself the personal target of trying to get 50 caps and score 10 goals if I could, so to have 107 is something I am really proud of, particularly being among those names. "I'm not looking at (Peter) Shilton (125 caps)or (David) Beckham (115). Passing Bobby Moore (108)would be the next one. To go past him, after everything he did, would be unbelievable. "But the dream would be to come away from a tournament and everyone back home is proud of the team. "For me the ambition is this: can I help get the team past a quarter-final?" Despite intimations by Anfield boss Rodgers that Gerrard may quit the England set-up after the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Gerrard says he is as yetundecided on his international future. "I haven't really thought about what I will do after the World Cup," he added."It is all about going to enjoy this World Cup. What an experience it will be in Brazil."

Jones hits back at Man United haters

Posted: 12 Nov 2013 01:20 AM PST

The Premier League champions have made an indifferent start to the season under new boss David Moyes, but a 1-0 victory over Arsenal on Sunday dragged them back into the title race. Moyes faces the unenviable task of following Alex Ferguson, after the Scot brought his trophy-laden tenure to an end when retiring at the end of the last campaign. Ferguson oversaw an unprecedented era of domination at Old Trafford, leading United to 13 top-flight titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups and two UEFA Champions League trophies during his 27 years in charge. It is that record, says Jones, that makes the club so unpopular with rival fans in particular, although the England international claims such animosity drives the players on. "People want us to fail because we have won the league so many times," he told the Guardian. "United won the league long before I was here. Everyone hates the best clubs, it is as simple as that. "We enjoy that. We relish the test we get thrown at us week in, week out." Jones also believes United's victory over Arsenal has put them in a perfect position to start climbing the Premier League table. United are fifth, five points behind the Emirates Stadium outfit, but the versatile 21-year-old - who has operated in both defence and midfield at stages already this season - feels that they are poised to make a charge. "It (the victory over Arsenal) proves when people doubt us we are more than capable of standing up for ourselves and proving to people that is why we were champions last season," he added. "We weren't champions for nothing. This is a step in the right direction going into a busy period."
