United target rules out move

Posted: 31 Jul 2014 04:12 AM PDT

cd592Edinson Cavani has dismissed rumours that linked him with a move away from Paris St Germain and insisted he’s happy to continue to play for the Ligue 1 champions and that he has no interest in parting ways with the Parisian club.

The Uruguayan striker has long been linked with a move to Manchester United, after emerging as a transfer target for David Moyes in January and speculation over the former Napoli striker intensified towards the end of last season, when Cavani had looked frustrated at being deployed in a wide role to allow Zlatan Ibrahimovic to play in his favourite position.

That, coupled with the fact that he was no longer the team’s focal point as he’d been during his three seasons at Napoli when he scored an incredible 104 goals in 138 appearances in all competitions, had led to an increase in the rumours that claimed the 27-year-old was desperate to find a way out of the Parc des Princes.

However, speaking to French newspaper L’Equipe, Cavani insisted he’s happy under the Eiffel Tower and that he has no intention of leaving PSG this summer.

“I’m gonna stay in Paris,” he said.

“I’m really happy here and I’m completely sure that I’ll remain here, why wouldn’t I be?

“I’ve contract to honour and I’m totally relaxed about the future.”

Cavani, however, admitted that his future is not entirely in hands.

“Of course, it’s not all about the player, for the club has to make a decision too.”

Despite the rumours surrounding the Uruguayan and his perceived poor return last season, Cavani still managed to net 25 goals and assisted a further seven in 43 games in all competitions in his inaugural season in France and even if PSG were to consider selling him, they’d likely try to recoup almost all of the £56m they paid Napoli 12 months ago.

Glazers issue warning over United’s future

Posted: 31 Jul 2014 03:16 AM PDT

Ed WoodwardOnly a couple of weeks after Ed Woodward was eager to stress that, for the second consecutive summer, Manchester United “had no budget”, the club has warned potential investors that the club could fail to attract top players and retain the ones currently in the squad, if the club fails to qualify for the Champions League this season.

A second consecutive season away from Europe’s elite competition would put United in a difficult situation and the Glazers were more than eager to stress the point when they announced their plans to sell a further five per cent of the club.

The Glazers currently control 90% of the club, but the eight million shares they’re planning to sell will see them – not the club, obviously – pocket £89m but in the accompanying prospectus, they painted a rather bleak picture, by pointing out that missing out on the Champions League would see the income from the new kit deal with Adidas drop by 30%.

United signed a new 10-year deal with the Germany manufacturer, which will replace Nike on United’s kit from next season, worth £75m-a-season, but that could drop to £52.5m if Louis Van Gaal fails to steer United to a top four finish.

Over the last three seasons in European football’s most important competition United earned £59.7m, £42.3m and £38.9m in 2011, 2012 and 2013, respectively, from matchday revenues and broadcasting rights, but a first season without Champions League football in 19 years has hit the club hard, just one of the many unwanted legacies of the David Moyes’ era.

Here’s what the prospectus says:

“Because of the prestige associated with participating in the European competitions, particularly the Champions League, failure to qualify for any European competition, particularly for consecutive seasons, would negatively affect our ability to attract and retain talented players and coaching staff, as well as supporters, sponsors and other commercial partners.

“Failure to participate in the Champions League for two or more consecutive seasons would also reduce annual payments under the recently announced agreement with adidas by 30 per cent of the applicable payment for the year in which the second or other consecutive season of non-participation falls.”

United youngster bemoans being frozen out

Posted: 31 Jul 2014 12:10 AM PDT

International-Champions-Cup-2014-Inter-Milan-v-Manchester-UnitedWilfried Zaha has admitted David Moyes and him didn’t see eye-to-eye and that he was frozen out by the former United manager last season, but he’s relishing the opportunity to impress Louis Van Gaal.

Zaha signed for United in January 2012 for £15m but remained on loan at Crystal Palace for the remainder of the campaign making the switch to Old Trafford at the beginning of last season, but he was given very few opportunities to impress and was eventually shipped out to Cardiff on loan in January.

Having made his first appearance in United’s summer tour against Inter Milan on Wednesday, Zaha insisted that he’s determined to establish himself at United and that Van Gaal’s arrival is an opportunity the 21-year-old is determined to seize.

"There was so much pressure on Moyes, so I can't really blame him," explained Zaha to the Mirror. "I could have got a better chance, but coming to United brings a load of pressure.

“But if you're not the manager's cup of tea, you can't do anything about it.

"It was definitely not my attitude.”The manager had his way of playing and maybe I just didn't suit it."

Van Gaal’s reputation to give youngsters a chance has been evident in United’s US tour so far, with Reece James, Tyler Blackett and Michael Keane all been given some minutes on the pitch and Zaha admitted being excited by Van Gaal’s penchant for trusting young players.

"I'm buzzing to hear he will give youngsters a chance," said the 21-year-old.

"That's all I wanted since I came here. I just want to be a Man United player. Hopefully this season I'll get the chance."

Zaha was also eager to stress that Van Gaal’s forthright approach with both press and players has already been very well received by the latter category.

"He'll tell you exactly how he wants it," Zaha said. "He won't beat about the bush or not tell you anything. That helps you instead of isolating you or just not telling you. He'll let you know exactly where you are and what you are doing wrong."

Zaha eager to impress Van Gaal

Posted: 30 Jul 2014 06:27 PM PDT

Zaha, 21, was a 15m signing from Crystal Palace at the start of the 2013-14 campaign but only managed four appearances in his debut season under manager David Moyes. Moyes was eventually sacked after United finished seventh in the Premier League and missed out on European football altogether. With Dutchman Van Gaal now at the helm at Old Trafford, Zaha is relishing the opportunity to emerge from the shadows and stake his claim for regular football in Manchester after a forgettable season. To be honest, if you are not the managers cup of tea you cant do anything about it, Zaha said when asked about Moyes. There was nothing I could do. It was definitely not my attitude. The manager had his way of playing and maybe I just didnt suit it. There was so much pressure on him, so I cant really blame him. I could have got a better chance but coming to United brings a load of pressure. Zaha was the only player in the travelling squad not to have played a minute in the United States prior to Tuesdays penalty shoot-out win over Inter. But the Englishman was given time in the second half at FedEx Field and he showed glimpses of his potential in an impressive performance. I played all right and Im just happy the manager is happy with my performance really, said Zaha. I just have to work hard and I have just done what he has asked. He said if I worked hard I would get my chance. It definitely is [a fresh start]. All I can do is work hard and see how the season goes. Its a clean slate for me. Zaha is down the pecking order at United, with strikers Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez vying for a spot in the starting XI. However, the former Crystal Palace man is buoyed by Van Gaals history of promoting youth. I have heard that before he came, so I am buzzing to hear that he will give youngsters a chance, he said. Thats all I really [wanted] since I came here. I just want to be a Manchester United player. Hopefully this season I will get the chance.

The Class A Ordinary Shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol MANU. The Glazers appear to be cashing in on the clubs renewed optimism, after replacing David Moyes with Louis van Gaal as manager. When Moyes sacking was confirmed, Uniteds share price had dipped to US$14.98, but had already bounced back to $16.74 by the time Van Gaal was appointed.

No official Cuadrado bids yet, insists agent

Posted: 30 Jul 2014 05:03 AM PDT

Cuadrado's representativeAlessandro Lucci admitted he had held informal negotiations with a several clubs - including Spanish giants Barca - but added that his client is happy in Florence. Manchester United have also been linked with a move for the 26-year-old, who shone in Colombia's run to the World Cup quarter-finals. But Lucci reiterated comments made by Fiorentina sporting directorDaniele Prade, who claimed no bids had been received for Cuadradoon Tuesday. "We have been talking with Barcelona as well as other clubs for a while," Lucci told Tuttomercatoweb."We have noted a lot of interest but, as of today, there are no official talks, not with Barcelona or any other club. "Barcelona is represented by very serious professionals that in our conversations have never, let me repeat it, never talked about using dodgy strategies. "I'll take the chance to clear out things on another subject. "The relationship we have with all at Fiorentina, personal and professional, both for me and for Cuadrado, is exceedingly good. "Should there be in the near future some important, first level, talks we will sit down, analyse the pro and cons and close the deal to the maximum satisfaction of all parties involved."

Top 10 friendly foul-ups: Barton the peacekeeper, kidnaps and hotdog arson

Posted: 30 Jul 2014 04:45 AM PDT

1) North-east neighbours get naughty Joey Barton may have ended the 2011/12 season by booting Sergio Aguero up the arse, but he began it as unlikely peacemaker for Newcastle in a game that proved there's no such thing as a friendly derby. In bizarre scenes at the Darlington Arena, 300 members of the Toon Army flooded onto the pitch after Sammy Ameobi put Newcastle 2-0 up, leading to violent clashes with their Darlo counterparts as Barton pleaded in vain for calm. Proof that Geordies and sunshine don't mix. 2) Friendly fire, Victorian-style In the 19th century, football was described as "a gentleman's game played by ruffians", but there was nothing gentlemanly about some fans. The first recorded instance of hooliganism in English football actually took place after a pre-season friendly. In 1885, after Preston North End had thumped Aston Villa 5-0, both teams were pelted with stones, attacked with sticks, punched, kicked and spat at by supporters described as "howling roughs" by press reports. Oof. 3) Making an impression Joining a new club is rarely easy –at the start you have to settle in, impress and earn your stripes. New Bayer Leverkusen manRyu Seung-Woo, a summer signing from Jeju United, thought he'd done just that by netting the equaliser against second-tier Aachen with 10 minutes left of his side's pre-season 1-1 draw. Three minutes later, however, he saw red– quite literally, after being sent off for headbutting an opposition player. The DFB didn't take too kindly to the incident, banning him from Bayer's three remaining pre-season tussles. Naughty. 4) No fun in the sun We all love the Mediterranean. The sun, the sand... the squabbling. Things got particularly heated over one close-season weekend in 2010, when two inter-island games turned into wars on the shores. First, the match between Sardinians Cagliari and northern neighbours Bastia of Corsica was abandoned after 75 minutes following a succession of fouls and scuffles. Then 48 hours later, it was the turn of the Sicilians and Cretans. Catania vs Iraklis was halted after yet more fisticuffs, this time with just 70 minutes on the clock. We thought the Med diet was supposed to calm you. 5) 'The blond arrow' vs the gunmen Nothing gets in the way of a good pre-season like having your star player kidnapped – just ask Real Madrid. Alfredo Di Stefano was nabbed at gunpoint from the European champions' Caracas hotel on their 'friendly' tour of South America in 1963. "At first I thought they were going to kill me," said the Argentine, but he was released unharmed two days later and reunited with the main perpetrator, Paul del Rio, 42 years later for the launch of a film that recounted the incident. Bygones and all that. 6) Football's fieriest hotdogs Friendlies in Argentina are, it's fair to say, a little different. For a start, they take place in January – between the traditional Apertura and Clausura halves of the season. Secondly, they're not friendly. During the '90s, these traditional summer round-robins turned into 'revenge' tournaments, with so many red cards the authorities were forced to suspend players for subsequent competitive games. River Plate gaffer Ramon Diaz even resigned in 1993 after losing one of these 'friendlies' to a team of Boca youngsters, while in 2002 another superclasico was suspended because of crowd trouble, with a hotdog vending cart set on fire and thrown from the upper stand into the lower tier. 7) George's not-so-marvellous medicine Getting injured in a pre-season friendly is careless. To do it in your own testimonial is just plain daft. But that's exactly what happened to Denis Irwin in 2000 after the Manchester United full-back was the victim of George Weah's only meaningful act in a Manchester City shirt, a hefty challenge in an otherwise friendly derby. The Irishman was stretchered off but thankfully recovered to play two more seasons at Old Trafford. 8) "Does your husband know you're here?!" Protest was in the air at a host of friendlies in summer 2011, with fans of Bayern Munich, Birmingham, Feyenoord and Egypt's Al-Ahly all using the off-season to demonstrate against their clubs' various crimes. But in Turkey, Fenerbahce turned the tables on their unruly element by banning male supporters for two games after violence at a pre-season friendly against Shakhtar Donetsk. It didn't hit the Istanbul giants in the pocket either, as 41,000 women and children under 12 turned up in the men's absence. 9) Older but no wiser Pre-season tours are the perfect time for a bit of team bonding. Shame nobody told Dennis Wise. On Leicester City's 2002 trip to Finland, a late-night game of cards reportedly got out of hand and as Wise squared up to an unnamed player, Callum Davidson tried to intervene. His reward: a broken nose and jaw. Wise's punishment: the sack. Incredibly, he initially won his case for unfair dismissal, before a Foxes appeal eventually succeeded. 10) From Saint to gonner Spare a thought for Lloyd Morrison. While most managers enjoy the honeymoon of pre-season and at least the first few real games to see if a marriage is going to work, the unfortunate gaffer lasted just five days in charge of St Helens Town after a disagreement with the North-West Counties Premier Division's hierarchy over where the club should do their pre-season training.

Mazzarri praises Inter despite United defeat

Neither side could find a breakthrough in normal time, meaning Tuesday'smatch was decided by penalty kicks atFedEx Field in Maryland, and it was United who emerged 5-3 victors. Despite that setback, Inter boss Mazzarri was more than happy with the application of his team in what he considered an even contest. "It went very well for us," he said. "It was a balanced game and I liked the team's attitude." The match pitted new Inter centre-back Nemanja Vidic against his former side for the first time since he left Old Trafford at the end of last season following the expiry of his contract. Vidic was handed a fine reception from the United supporters who were in attendance when he replaced Marco Andreolli 10 minutes from timeand Mazzarri was delighted with the warm welcome afforded to the Serbian. "It's a pleasure to see these kinds of things," he added. "They're really good for football. It was a great event to watch."

Shaw concedes Van Gaal criticism warranted

Posted: 30 Jul 2014 12:28 AM PDT

Shaw was made to train on his own earlier this week during United's pre-season tour of the United States, with Van Gaal claiming the close-season signing from Southampton was not at the fitness levels he demands. The 19-year-old made a surprise substitute appearance in the 0-0 drawwith Inter in the International ChampionsCup on Tuesday, after Reece James was taken off injured. Shaw conceded that Van Gaal was right in his assessment and admitted he must do more to meet the requirements of playing for a club of the stature of United. "It's something I totally agree with," Shaw said."Playing in this formation [3-5-2] you really have to be fit. I am fit but not at his [Van Gaal's]high demands. I know I have got to get fitter to get up and down. "That's something I am going to work on, and tonight in 45 minutes I felt really good, so I am looking forward to keep on progressing until the start of the season. "I didn't come into United thinking it's going to be much harder and that's something I made a mistake on. I thought it was just going to be the same but United is the biggest club in the world and there are world-class players in training so it's something that is going to push me on. "That's something I need to keep me pushing on and this is only going to help me in the long run. "Pre-season you are always going to try and get your fitness up so I am not too sure but Iplayed 45 minutes and I felt great. I could have played on. It's a progression from the last game I played so hopefully now the main focus is getting fitter and fitter and I'll be flying by the start of the season. "I wasn't meant to play today because me and the staff decided it would be better to push me harder in training, but I didn't have any problems and I feel good." Van Gaal was impressed with Shaw's performance against the Serie A outfit, adding: "I think he did very good tonight. "He's working very hard. He was lucky today because I was going to play our friend Reece James, but he was a little bit injured. "And so I asked Shaw to play, in spite of a very heavy training session this morning."

Van Gaal already battling with the press

Posted: 30 Jul 2014 05:08 AM PDT

At Louis van Gaal’s press conference this week we were able to witness one of the first of what likely will be many rucks between the manager and the press.

Ian Ladyman, the Liverpool supporting journalist from The Daily Mail, was goading Van Gaal about Manchester City, but the manager refused to be drawn.

Q:The British footballer is characterised as a man who plays on emotion and doesn't play in the way you describe as much as the Dutch footballer does. Is that fair?

LVG: That is your opinion. You say it, then you say I have to say it.

Q: Is that an unfair statement?

LVG: I don't know because I have to know the players first then I can judge. You can judge because you have been a journalist for many years and have seen the culture.

Q: From the outside what are your views of a British player?

LVG: What you have mentioned.

Q: So you share a similar view?

LVG: No, because I have already said the players under the direction of David Moyes are a lot of different to the players under the direction of Alex Ferguson, but also under the direction of me. But we shall have to wait and see. But from the outside it is fair to say that. But I don't want to be judging as an outsider. I want to hear that and feel that but at the moment they are doing great.

Q: What do you think of the challenge of having such a big club like Manchester City in the same City, a team that has also won the title?

LVG: It does not bother me. Whether they are ten metres away or 30 km away.

Q: What do you think of what Manchester City have done over the last three years?

LVG: It is amazing because they were not a big club and now already Champions and they have also won the Cup in the last three years. They are knocking at the door but that is good for Manchester United also because where there is competition you can be proud when you are the champion at the end and maybe we will be the champions.

Q: City fans would argue that they have knocked at the door and opened it and closed it and now you have to knock at the door again and try and get back through it?

LVG: If you like to say that, then you have to write it down! I feel that he [looking round the table] likes to say that.

Q: But that's their view – that they are on top…

LVG: I have learnt the word 'entice'. You are enticing me. I said 'provoke' but Ryan [Giggs] said it should be 'entice.'

Q: United fans are excited by the way you handled some of the Holland games in the World Cup? Changes of formations, changing of keepers for shoot-out etc?

LVG: It is also a little bit lucky when you do that! But of course you do those things for a good reason. Already I give this press conference with a lot of arguments [reasons] and I hope you can understand that.

Q: We had a manager before who we had a lot of arguments with…

LVG: I don't mean arguments, I mean the reasons why. So it's good that I explained that. I don't have arguments with you – until now…. [laughs]

UNITED PRESS OFFICER: Sorry, we've got to go…

LVG [getting up}: Interesting eh? Interesting. You're all coaches now…

_76617591_luke_shaw_van_gaal_gettyMuch was made over Louis van Gaal’s comments about Luke Shaw not being fit over the past week. The left-back has been ordered to take part in separate training sessions from the rest of the squad in a bid to boost his fitness.

“I am always a trainer who sees the individuals and what each player needs,” Van Gaal said. “Luke needs to be fit and he's not very fit and can't perform how I want. He needs to be fit and to train individually. I can't judge why. I see what I see. I have spoken with him and we have made a programme with him. He has agreed. We will have to see how long it takes. I don't know. I have heard good messages from Tony Strudwick the fitness coach.”

Having just returned from the World Cup with England, it makes you wonder how Shaw, just 19-years-old, was in a position to be unfit.

When you compare England’s performances with Holland’s this summer, it is clear there was a huge difference in fitness. Whilst England tended to die after an hour or so in to the game, Holland repeatedly won games in injury/extra time. Van Gaal has high standards, higher than Roy Hodgson you could presume, and Shaw is paying the price for this.

After Van Gaal initially ruled Shaw out of playing in last night’s game against Inter Milan, he used him as a second half substitute.

“He is working very hard and he was lucky tonight,” the manager said after the game. “Normally we would play Reece James but he was injured. So I asked Luke if he would play. He did a very hard training session this morning but he said he would play and he still did very well.”

Shaw has responded well to Van Gaal’s methods though and claimed that he agrees with the feedback he’s received on his fitness.

“I am fit but I am not at the high level the manager demands,” he said. “I have got to get fitter to get up and down, but it’s something I have got to work on and, in this 45 minutes, I felt really good so I am looking forward to keep progressing to be ready for the start of the season."

Shaw has revealed that life at United is much harder than he expected, with the step up from Southampton and England proving to be huge.

"Yeah, it was a surprise,” he said. “I didn’t come into United thinking it would be much harder. That’s something that I think I made a mistake on. I thought it was just going to be the same but it’s the biggest club in the world and there are world-class players in training. That is something that is going to push me on and it’s something I am looking forward to doing."

Asked if van Gaal has been hard on him so far, Shaw said: "Yeah, but that’s something I want and I need to push on so they can do what they want but it will only help me in the long run."

Van Gaal: I set clubs up for the future

Posted: 30 Jul 2014 01:30 AM PDT

Louis van Gaal has ticked all the right boxes in his interviews since becoming the manager of Manchester United. This week he has again shown why he is the perfect man for the job, focussing on developing players from the youth team, which follows on in the steps of Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson.

“I'm not a coach who thinks short term,” said Van Gaal. “I am a coach who thinks always in the long term. The way you see Barcelona still playing with six players from my time because I gave a lot of chances to the youth players. The structure and the culture of the club is Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol, Valdes and Motta. I also gave him his debut and he is playing in Paris St.Germain now, not a little club. At Bayern Munich it was the same. You can see that in Muller, Alaba, Klose, that kind of player. So I am always for the long term not the short term. When I buy, I buy players for the long term, not the short term because I do respect the club a lot and also the other clubs. When you see Ajax I had the youngest team to win the Champions League with 17, 18, 19 year-old players. When you use youth players of the club they know the culture of the club and they want to defend that culture and wear that culture and transfer that culture. When you buy a player from outside you have to wait and see and not every player will fulfil your expectation. It is much more difficult, also for the player.”
